As someone else said, this is beautifully dumbed down (without being insulting). I grew up driving manual shift cars, but an ATV is a totally different animal. I just bought a used one (at 65 yo to help me get deer out of the woods) and needed this to really understand what's going on with the shifting. Thanks!

This is a good, thorough video. Growing up, we only ever had manual vehicles. I had to learn to drive them all before I was ever allowed to take any of the 4 wheelers or trucks out. I hunted with my grandpa a lot, so I needed to be able to drive one in case there was ever an emergency. I kind of miss manually shifting, to be honest. Last manual vehicle I had was a 2008 F350 PowerStroke, and I traded it about a year ago. It’s harder to find vehicles with that option these days. BUT, automatic transmissions have their benefits, as well.

Let’s say you are rounding a corner, and you need to slow down, let’s say 4th gear, should I drop the gear if I’m only going to slow down for a couple of seconds to round the corner just to speed up again? Or should I just keep it in 4th?

I hate to sound stupid but I guess we’ve all gotta learn somehow lol. I understand shifting up, when the engine starts sounding like my boss, shift up. But how do I know to shift down? When I’m going slower? My speeds vary in the woods so do I always need to shift down? Thanks in advance for any info you’ve got.

Yeah, my honda rancher is having issues when i shift. It backfires then the motor stalls.
