How to Easily Arrange Guitar Tab in Logic Pro X

Logic Pro X features a full guitar tab editor. It takes a little finding, and a tiny bit of setting up to make it really easy to use. In this video I go over how to view your score as guitar tab, review some project settings, and recommend some keyboard shortcuts that helps you change what string each note should be played on.

Great video. Thank you! December 2020... still works in Logic Pro X and Mac Big Sur. I used control+up & control+down for MIDI event channel switching as those are not assigned in the current version of Logic Pro X.

Great tip! Thank you I initially didn't have option for the TAB Guitar in Layout nor Tablature Tab in Score settings. In case anyone else will have this issue - you need to do following: Preferences > Advanced > in Additional Options mark Score

Thanks for the video. If you do not have the guitar tab options (like me at first), then go to Logic Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced Tools. Make sure Score is checked under additional options.

All these years I've been manually changing channels instead of using short cuts! 😬 This is soooo much easier. Also, I recommend using guitar mix so that you can see Tab and notation in the same section of the score. It makes it easier to voice the guitar with other instruments. Cheers!

Nice tip on the key command for moving the note to a different string! Do you know if it´s possible to increase the distance between strings on the tablature? I´ve been looking everywhere but apparently it doesn´t have that option! Thanks.

You could also use inverse channel and swap the key commands (up arrow changes to lower number and visa versa). Then when you use the arrow up key it will move up and down arrow for down but the ch number will correspond to the traditional guitar string number.

I know its been a while but... BTW Really helpful video, thanks! My question- is it possible to create an instrument from scratch, I need to create a banjo tuning but cant find where I can create a 5 stringed instrument and of course end up with notation. I sort of went along the amend a 5 string Bass but sort of got to a dead end.

Man thanks a lot! I do love my Logic but sometimes things doesn't seem to be very logical. I don't know how you come across this (manipulating the tabs via the MIDI channels. That's crazy. As a music teacher this was exactly what I needed.

Is there a way to set a high and low fret limit (for a section)? If you could, then you wouldn't have to manually move notes around as much.

Here’s a question. I’ve created a bass tab and everything is looking good except for some weird reason logic lays out the bars as different lengths which is not ideal. How do I line the bars up so they are even? Cheers. Great video.

Very cool, thanks for this video. But I'm thinking for quick and easy automatic tab generation (for sharing with friends, etc), it might be better to just buy a MIDI guitar and feed it into one of the tab writing programs.

This was indeed helpful, thanks. Logic does a horrible job, when it comes to this... I simply want to tab some simple bass lines and it drives me crazy. It's still easier to switch to guitar pro or any other editor and import it afterwards.

Does Logic Pro X let you make it sound like a guitar in the end, or is this just to make it easier for a guitar player to arrange the piano parts?

Yes you can do synth guitars in Logic Pro X, you just need to change the instrument for that track. Press ‘Y’ to open the library and you can browse all the instruments logic includes, and there’s lots of guitars. What are you trying to do?

Thank you for your video ... The tablature editor unfortunately has not evolved over the years: Impossible to write really polyphonically (with three four voices) ... There is always the solution to display at the same time the score and the tablature.

Bishop Bautista Have a look at your source midi data in the piano roll - do you have duplicate notes for these? If so just delete 1 of the 2 notes. You could also delete the notes in the score / tab view by selecting the string/fret voicing you don’t want to keep and hitting backspace / delete. Sometimes you get these in the score editor even when it looks like 2 separate note events in the piano roll, because the score editor is applying a quantisation to make simpler notation. So you end up with 2 notes of the same pitch being quantised to be played at the same time - which is what the tab is trying to show! Does that help? I’ve had a look, it is that the notes are doubled. They’re just perfectly doubled, exactly the same note length for each note, so you can’t see them in the piano roll. But they are there! Open up the event list (shortcut ‘D’) and you’ll see there’s 2 events for every note! Easiest fix for this is, in either the piano roll or the score editor, go to edit > select > highest notes, then press the backspace key. That will get rid of all the duplicate notes! Normally that function would select the highest note in a chord, but here it just selects all the dupes for us!

you can always keep it inverted and then for the key command just set the opposite...

Logic is a good Daw, but it has this stupid little things that are very simple in other softwares, but they manage somehow to make it very complicated in Logic, its like they have a talent to screw things up
