Good to know... that makes sense. I just always have the Advanced Tools on all the time so I didn't even think about that. I don't really know why they aren't just on by default since it's a "pro" music app but I guess that's for a different discussion!

Thank you Austin for such a clear demonstration. I've tried to use other music notation software, such as Finale, without success. For the most part, Logic X has retained most of the same functionality as 9, which I use. Now if I can notate a score triggering the V-Drums, that will just fabulous.

A friend and I have been writing a score to accompany a stage production. He knows all about scoring the things you blow and the things you bow, but neither of us had any idea about the things you hit; no idea how to turn the piano roll drums into something a drummer could play. This video has demystified that process and has enabled me to get it done. Thanks for making such a clear tutorial. i am now going to investigate copying a mapped instrument between projects to save time.

+Bennett Huffman Yea I forgot to go over that in the video but all you do is go to File->Save as Template once you have the project setup like you want. Name it something like "Drum Notation" and it will go into your "My Templates" folder. Next time you want to start a new notation project, just go to your templates and select the "Drum Notation" one and you are good to go.

Great tutorial! I would like to input my midi notes for drums via guitar (midi pickup) but since the lowest note is E1 and not C1, is there a way I could map the kick drum and still have it show correctly on the staff? Thanks
@abbdrums
@abbdrums 9 жыл бұрын
NEPSOUND hmmm... If you follow the steps exactly like I show in the video, it should give you that option to reassign the track. I would start from scratch and try everything again. Maybe you don't have secondary click setup on your Mac? You can try control+clicking the track to see if that brings it up...

Awesome video and really helpful! Do you happen to know how this guideline works when you are programming drums in another drum VST, like GGD? That one doesn't rely on GM mappings per se, so it would be really helpful if I could figure out how to get that going. Cheers!

Perfect! Thanks so much man. I was always muddling along and used to work with Guitar Pro, to get all my notations done. This is also a great way to transcribe the stuff you've programmed already anyways. For changing the speed of the videos you use: Have you tried just importing the videos into Logic and then using the Flex tool to adjust the general tempo of the audio track? I think this would also make it easier for you to transcribe the drum tracks directly in Logic while listening to them. Let me know and thanks for your help! Paule

Great tutorial. I'd wrestled with drum mapping and display with Logic in the pre-X days (I've used it since it was Notator on the Atari) but hadn't bothered with establishing a PAS compliant drum setup... so it's been a while since I've had to mess with all the ridiculous sub windows to get it together. One thing, though. How do you import ALL THAT WORK into an existing Logic project? There're TWO elements that would be needed to be imported to an existing project: The drum-mapped instrument (copy-paste? Then patch it to the Bluebird kit one would add in the existing project?) and the staff style (I can't see how to do that). It could be a problem. Meanwhile, I'll open up my new drum stave template (as you showed), drop a 2-mix from my main project in, then copy-paste the tempo list and events from the "signature" event list from the existing project into the drum template project so that THAT project will have the same structure and tempo. ALSO, going forward, I probably use Bluebird as my "temp drum sound" in my projects so a copy-paste into the blank drum template project will save a lot of steps building the VISUAL part up from scratch. All in all, it's a pretty kludgy way to do it. That's not your fault; that's Logic's fault.

@abbdrums
@abbdrums 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks man, I've never tried to do it with a single track but I have a feeling that setting the main notation track as a mapped instrument overrides the output for that track which would make it unable to produce drum sounds on its own which is why it has to be cabled to a normal software track so you can hear the output from the mapped instrument track. Experiment with it, though, and see if you can get it to work on a single track. That would be more efficient if it's possible but I'm not sure it is.

Hello all. My results in using this video is a success. I like to use third party plug ins- It's not necessary, but its my preference. If you're using a third party drum library like GGD, like I am. Follow the same exact steps Austin has mentioned---but patch the "mapped instrument" in the MIDI Environment to (in my case) GGD, to the GGD CHANNEL, then patch that to the playback channel. Hope this helps! ✌
