i work in a restaurant. We have a full celiac-friendly menu including staples like appetizers. wings, chicken tenders burgers and any other sandwich. we have 2 designated Celiac friendly fryers. on to-go orders all celiac-friendly items are served in a completely seperate bag than non celiac friendly items

My endoscopy is scheduled for next month, but I have been diagnosed with lactose and fructose malabsorption. Been doing research and stopped at an IHOP restaurant to check out their gluten-friendly pancakes -- they smelled like regular pancakes, so I asked what they were made of and my server said rice and eggs, and several other ingredients. I told my girlfriend about them, cause she has a grandson who has celiac and she said the reason they smelled like regular pancakes was because they were cooked on the same griddle as wheat-based pancakes. I tried to write the company through their website, but had difficulty getting the email to send. I'm also in the process of spring-cleaning my kitchen. Fun-times! So much stuff you have to remember...

Hi Dolores! Sorry for my late reply, have you had your endoscopy yet? 💕 Yes, unfortunately IHOP pancakes are not celiac safe at all. 😟 It is so frustrating that restaurants offer gluten-free options that are not actually gluten-free. The transition to gluten-free is tough for sure. I hope you're doing well! Thanks for your comment. 🙏

@@robynsglutenfreeliving Yes, and they backed out as soon as they found an ulcer, so I was NOT happy that they didn't do the celiac biopsy while they were in there, but I'm rescheduled for another endoscopy in December. I found out that the fructose intolerance diet eliminates wheat too, however I'm continuing eating two pieces of bread a day for the next endoscopy. My mother is allergic to wheat and we share a lot of medical issues in common, hence the celiac testing. I've had digestive issues all my life and a celiac diagnoses would explain a lot. I did find an website and app for restaurants called "Find Me Gluten Free." Have you heard of it? We thought about trying some of the restaurants listed.

@@DoloresJRush Oh no! That’s frustrating. Well at least December isn’t too far away. 💕 I have actually heard of that app, but never used it. I just downloaded it now to check it out. I think the app would be helpful for sure to find some places to try. Important note though-It won’t be a big deal unless you get a celiac diagnosis-but I can already tell that some of the places on here aren’t actually celiac safe (there are a few listed that I’ve been to that don’t have dedicated fryers, waffle presses, etc.) That said though, it’s not bad for a free app to give you some ideas of places to go! 😁

@@robynsglutenfreeliving I did kind of question some of the restaurants listed for my city, however, I was going to question the wait staff like my girlfriend said to do. One of my guys (hubby, son) favorite sandwich places to eat had a notice up in the window that said they had gluten-free bread. My girlfriend said in that instance, request that the servers change gloves, put down a piece of foil, put the gluten-free bread on top of that, add the sandwich ingredients to the bread and then wrap the bread with the foil. And then I wondered if the tongs touched the non-gluten-free bread, wouldn't that contaminate my sandwich with gluten-crumbs?

It is also okay not to eat :) (edit: at restaurants) I have celiac, ADHD, and autism. I don't eat out. I started watching this video thinking maybe I am in a place in my life where I can manage.... .... ....Yeah, nope. I have been burned too many times, go non-verbal (autism) when I am stressed out (especially about food), and ADHD impairs my working memory so I forget the list of things I need to remember to stay safe. My friends are use to getting take-out and we have picnics on the beach. Sometimes I am just fine going to a restaurant and order a Coke while my friends eat. So much less stressful!

P.s. Anyone reading this comment has my permission to use me as anecdotal evidence that ADHD and/or Autism will not be cured by a gluten free diet. 😅 When I tell people (who don't know I am celiac) that I have ADHD or Autism, they tell me eating gluten-free would help me. 🤣 No, eating gluten will make my already ADHD/Autistic brain all Brain Foggy which absolutely makes it look like I don't know how to manage my neuro-divergencies.

I went to an “owl themed” restaurant for Veterans Day because they were offering a free meal for veterans. Unfortunately it was a very limited menu so I ordered a cheeseburger with no bun. The server was very confused with me informing her that I have celiac but I managed to get the point across. Eventually she returned with our orders and sure enough, my burger came with a bun. I told her I couldn’t eat it or I would get violently ill. She rolled her eyes and took the plate away. 2 minutes later she returned with plate in hand. When she placed it in front of me I could still see bun residue stuck to the cheese. I asked if she had simply removed the bun and brought it back and after a very pregnant pause she said yes. Once again I refused the burger and she walked away looking as frustrated as I should have been given the circumstances. By the time I finally got something I could eat my two friends had already finished their meals. Needless to say this dining experience was not quite the “hoot” I was expecting.

Another add is Brazilian food. If you’re not vegetarian the Brazilian steakhouses even have bread that is traditionally gf and made from tapioca flour.

A lot of Korean & Japanese vinegar or Mirin (often used in Japanese, Korean food) have malt in them. I would not eat sushi at a restaurant not seeing the exact brand of vinegar or Mirin they use.

Interesting! I personally haven't seen any Rice vinegars or Mirin containing malt, but it's definitely a good thing to keep an eye out for. I have a few favourite sushi places that I go to that I know are safe! I also tend to go to the places that have gluten-free soy sauce and options, so maybe they are a bit more aware of gluten sources. I haven't looked into Korean food though. Thanks for the heads up! 😊

In our area, eating gluten free was hard to do at a restaurant. Staff didn't know what gluten was. There was almost nothing on the menu. The staff always questioned you to make you prove that you needed to be gluten free. All that has changed. Pastas aren't available. But, salads, burgers, soups, fratattas, and a lot of foods are gluten free or can be altered remove the gluten. I have even found gluten free deep fried foods.

I have found emailing a restaurant gives me better results than a server. The manager or owner is usually more knowledgeable and am often surprised with what’s gluten free being more then I expected even if it’s not on the menu. Mexican has been a pretty strong option since it’s all corn based. Red flag on the gf soy sauce though. I have always had weird reactions after sushi (not cheap sushi because artificial crab has gluten) and wonder if people accidentally refill the GF soy wrong or something. A lot is marinated in soy.

They just need to start making more gluten-free restaurants or just eliminate that terrible weed. I mean I have just been finding that we’re basically in the same camp. And a lot of people would not have this if they were not growing so much of this terrible weed. And then throwing it at us. you really see where it is once you cross the threshold.

I mean that’s what I could tell it is it’s a gluten grain trying to come out of my skin and my eyes and underneath! my arms and it burns. The thing is getting this a couple times it’s not that bad but since they’ve been throwing these things at us like crazy well my DH it just activates if you have like a couple grains. People are going to start finding that wheat is just terrible. Add the prevalence of celiac disease will start to decline as society pulls away from it because it’s a terrible 🌸

I hate when they come out of my tears when the grain hits my face burns and itches something bad. I was always wondering why I was itching my eyes to the point of almost gouging them out. People would also say I look tired because I had rubbed my eye so much. And I kept having gluten end up on the bags on my eyes. And in the corners. I mean this would all be fine . If we just ate a couple of them but the problem is it’s in everything so when you go to have something you cannot eat it without risking catching fire and a bunch of gluten grains trying to come out of everywhere

Hi! I wonder if that cross contamination thing matters to people like me? I just got diagnosed with celiac condition (or I don't know what it is called in english, but they did a biopsy in my intestine and it showed that I was allergic to gluten), but I don't think I've had any symptoms and I've been eating A LOT of gluten my whole life. They said it was still in the beginning stadium, but not fully developed disease (march 1)... so now I wonder what will happen if I eat food that is cross contaminated? Does it matter? I mean... I did not get symptoms on gluten rich diet, so maybe it will be enough to just not eat foods that are made of gluten (but ok with things that got contaminated)?

Was at a restaurant recently, where there were no appealing optrions, so I decided to just get some fries. The waitress said, "You want the gluten free fries, right?"" I was stunned and said yes. The other diners already had their food when my fries arrived, and insisted on examining and tasting them. The three of them agreed the GF fries were WAY better,

I mean I’m saying that I would’ve had like a little bit of irritation for the year but since it’s in everything? Major irritation and I have a beard as a Capricorn and we always have a beard. It is not good for a beard so let me tell you. They thought it was flesh eating bacteria. That does not look like it. And they gave me a bunch of food that had a bunch of gluten in it. I don’t wanna scare anybody but I almost died. Vancomycin is a powerful antibiotic. I couldn’t figure out why my skin was so painful but didn’t look that painful.. They literally had to knock me out in the hospital. Yeah I don’t need any antibiotics I just need people to stop putting gluten in everything!

Every time I would meet my friend he would expect for his assistance to have it disappeared. But every time I met him I was still on fire I thought it was strange. I could also feel like brain inflammation from it. my head was pounding! Not to mention it’s creepy it feels creepy DH it feels creepy as Hades! Because the gluten grains burns and itches. That’s why they had to knock me out in the hospital because I was in so much pain from the rash.
