Breakfast: Spam musubi & tons of water AM Snack: granola bar & tons of water Lunch: Acai bowl or Taco Bell & tons of water to get me thru sunset. Water is probably the most overlooked necessity to surf longer for sure! You're sweating in the water and gotta stay hydrated or you gas faster and feel hungry sooner
@brettbarley

@@rickeykoga2312 yes! people dont realize that you sweat while surfing... hydration is clutch.

What you eat day before also makes a difference. Good to keep it simple and healthy all day long. Oats porrage is good bese, just mix it up with differents fruits, berries, nuts etc, so iy wont get boring. Start the day always by drinking half a liter of water when you wake up. Dehydration while surfing on sunny day can mess up your session easily..

YES! I forgot to mention having a good meal the night before was very important as well... Once I realized I'd left that out, I'd already done the shoot, so wasn't going to re-shoot. Cause while eating well the day before is important, what you eat on the main day is more important. I can eat an average, or light, meal the night before... but as long as I eat well on the main day, I'm ok.

I haven’t surfed without an Apple or two and a couple of bananas and always bring diced up mango and kiwi whenever they’re in the store. Basically stay stocked with apples and bananas and yes I know kiwi and mango have loads of acids but they’re delicious and my favorite bars are Kind almond bars

One note is that, as you gain fitness / do more endurance type work your metabolism will adapt to become more efficient and you can go longer before getting desperately hungry. I'm not advocating eating less, just pointing this out as it's something that tends to get overlooked when people are thinking about nutrition.

What? NO BEER ...end of day in moderation ;-) Totally agree with eating like this. For me i keep a healthy trail mix in the vehicle and cliff bars(when on sale for a buck ea.) some bananas and water. Coffee keeps me un-hungry in the morning and so the trail mix is enough. Plus cant paddle if eat anymore without tasting it all twice over. I had an older friend i surfed with alot in the PNW that got me in the habbit of a fastfood diet. It effected my energy/stamina greatly. Eat lite and healthy! But love my Modelo Especial after work!

Only when the waves eventually get worse compared to when I went out... OR if it's just firing all day, I'll choose to go in depending the tides, so I can better time my next session. But on days where it's really good around here, there's always somewhere turning on when another spot is turning off. So sometimes I won't spend more than 1-2hrs out of the water at a time.

@brettbarley
@brettbarley 4 жыл бұрын
I mean it's all dependent on weather... You can't surf as long as I'm talking about if the water is 40 and the air is in the 30s, it's just not realistic. BUT for the vast majority of the world population of surfers, you can. But I can do 4hrs in low 40s water if I'm constantly moving, but not on an inconsistent swell. Not sure if I've ever done more in super low temps... normally that time of year daylight is scarce, so you're only getting 2 sessions in anyway. It's rare I'll squeeze in a 3rd session when its real cold. But I've still done 7hrs surfing when it's freezing cold... you just need good heat in you truck, good gear, and good enough waves to keep the psyche up and the blood flowing!

My question is how do your arms not feel like they are about to fall off and your ability to still stand up after 3 and a half hours of surfing? Every time I stay in the water for that long my cognitive abilities are weakened and I am unable to surf because I have hit exhaustion
@brettbarley
@brettbarley 4 жыл бұрын
because I do it all the time... I rarely surf less than 2hrs, and have grown up in an area where the majority of your surf sessions involve a side shore current. You're paddling out through intense short period waves, and running the beach to get back to the peak. Where I've grown up surfing has turned me into the surfer I am, and being in shape enough to handle 4-5+ hr long sessions is a by-product of that. remember... surfing is also my job, so I can pour all of my energy into each given day of waves.

How do you not constantly need the toilet? That’s the problem I have with drinking coffee or eating before surfing. I love eating basically everything you’ve mentioned but if I ate even a third of it before a surf I’d feel like I weighed 150kg and would be looking for the nearest public bathroom.

Haha, thanks for the response. It’s something I’ve often wondered about and I think it has a lot to do with metabolism - seems like lean guys with fast metabolisms can eat before surfing without experiencing any of the problems I’ve mentioned. Heavier guys seem to have a problem. Anyway, that’s probably already TMI - haha!

Got it wrong IMHO. Load up on nothing but protein. Fully load - eat as much as you want. Eggs, Steak, Almonds, Pumpkin seeds, Sunflower seeds. And drink decent amount of water. Take a tribulus, then go. can stay out for 4-5 hours easy (if arms in shape). You won't get hungry in surf due to way protein is digested and burned. No cramps either.
@brettbarley
@brettbarley 4 жыл бұрын
there's no right or wrong man... everyones body is different. What I provided was a way to eat on the go in the simplest form, so you can surf all day long, without having to stop for meals. Your idea works if you can have a meal before each session... but seeds alone aren't going to give you enough to sustain 4-5 sessions in a day enjoyably. 4-5hrs is a good session... And you obviously know what works for your body. But if one can't do 4-5hrs at least, you are out of shape to some extent, or not eating & hydrating properly.
@jeffg4686
@jeffg4686 4 жыл бұрын
@@brettbarley - Yeah, I hear ya - definitely different needs depending on situation (how much paddling vs sitting), but mixed protein (not just seeds) works wonders for not feeling hungry and providing necessary slow burning energy with benefit of being available for building muscle from your workout. Give it a try sometime - you may be surprised. Works wonders for me.

@@jeffg4686 I didn't break it all down, cause wanted this video to be short and to the point... but what youre saying is directly in agreement with this video. ALL of those bars are chocked full of protein. If I were to add up what my average protein intake is between sessions, when eating those bars, it'd be a total of 42g of protein. Those EPIC bars are just meat and spices, turned into jerky.
