🥒 ABOUT BEFRS:
Hey, I’m Sonny! I’m from the US but I’ve been living in Asia for 10 years and started making food and travel videos to document my experiences. I travel to different parts of the world, hunting down and documenting the most unique food each country has to offer.
If you see any factual food errors in my videos, please feel free to politely let me know in the comments. I'm a huge fan of trying different, interesting foods in each country. My show is from a Western point of view, but more importantly, MY point of view. It is not meant to offend any person or culture.

Celebrating how to eat when you're subjugated by Muslim authoritarians? A girl in Iran was just beaten to death for not covering her face. This seems like a celebration of human rights abuse under guise of religious tradition. The same tradition that brings us cutting off little girls clits in the FGM controversy and the prophet that slept with a 10 year old Aisha. Please reconsider celebrating Islam, Muhammad, and normalizing the abuse and dehumanization of women. Honestly this is really gross.

As a tour guide, we must know what a proper noun is, pronouncing the names of people, places, objects according to local people pronouncing them. Nowadays, we find more and more young people who are fluent in English who sometimes even pronounce Indonesian names as if they were foreigners, for example, pronouncing je-kar-dah which should be ja-kar-ta. In addition, a misstep in terms of tourism promotion by local governments which sometimes change the name of tourist attractions into English, for example Pantai Pulau Merah to Red Island Beach. Andre really do a good job.

@@rickwilliams967 If they follow their actual scripture **YES** .Listen first of all, you can’t generalize all muslim by what happen in middle east (especially when we talking about Indonesian right now) or by action done by terrorist group ISIS etc . This is what women right on their scripture 1. Women's rights to worship / religion and to enter heaven, not only monopolized by men, mentioned in Quran #QS 4: 124 " Meaning: "Whoever does righteous deeds, whether male or woman while she is a believer, then they will enter Paradise and they are not persecuted in the slightest.” #QS Ghafir : 40; Meaning: which means: "And whoever does good deeds is a good man and if a woman is a believer, she will enter Paradise, they are given sustenance therein without reckoning #QS Al-Nahl : 97 Meaning: "Whoever does good deeds, both men and women if he believes, We will surely give him life good and verily We will reward them with a reward better than what they have done ". 2. Rights in politics. Among others mentioned in QS Al-Taubah: 71 Meaning: "And those who believe, male and female, some of them" (is) be a helper for some others. They ordered (to do what is right and forbid what is evil…” The word "awliya" in the above verse can mean: cooperation, help and mastery. Then with the editorial "order to do what is good and prevent what is munkar ”gives a picture of the obligation to cooperate between men and women in various aspects of life. While the sentence "command doing what is good ”, its scope is very wide, including the control function, giving input and criticism to the authorities (political issues) In QS Al-Mumtahanah 12, narrates the women in the time of the Prophet for perform bai'at to the Prophet and his teachings. This shows that women have political rights and choices that must be protected, Islam also recommends to its people, both men and women, to always deliberative in solving the problems of his life in this world. (wa syawirhum fi al-amri). Again in that verse there is no discrimination because the sermon or audience in the verse includes men and women. Dan includes "all their affairs". Historical fact: Ummu Hani once guaranteed security (political asylum) to a group of polytheists, and this action was justified by the Prophet saw. Aisha, together with the male Companions, led directly a war known as the Jamal war or the Camel War against Ali bin Abi Talib, with regard to the issue of the succession of the change of caliphate at that time. 3. Material rights, receiving inheritance, owning the results of their own business and the right to work. In QS Al-Nisa ’: 32 Allah swt. said Meaning: for men the right (part) of what is bestowed on him and for women the right (part) of what is bestowed upon her. The verse explains that men and women have equal opportunities to obtain the blessings of Allah swt., including in the matter of ownership. Consequently, he will have the absolute right to hard work or work/effort which is done by every child of Adam. In the matter of the inheritance of Allah swt. Speaking In QS Al-Nisa ’: 11 Meaning: "Allah has prescribed for you about (the division of inheritance) for your children. That is, the share of a son is equal to the share of two daughters.” (Surah Al-Nisa': 11) The difference in the share of inheritance is solely based on differences in function. between men and women in the household system according to Islamic teachings. In QS Al-Nisa ': 34 is mentioned Even thou that men are leaders or in charge of women. However men have to look at the verse in the context of married life in the position of a man as husband. The indication, it appears by not removing it the rights of ownership and management of the wife's property, including of course the right to work and try. From QS Al-Taubah: 71 which we have mentioned before, we also acquire a picture of the necessity of cooperation between men and women in various aspects of life. The sermon in the verse does not differentiate between men and women. In the time of the Prophet Muhammad saw. as can we see in the traces of history Muslim women who pursue various types of professions, from business politics/government to the issue of makeup/beauty salons. > Salamah and Aisyah ra. (both the wives of the Prophet), Shafiyah, Laila al-Ghiffariyah and others with the men competed on the battlefield. >Khadijah bint Khuwailid (wife the first of the Prophet saw.) and Qillat Ummi Bani Ammar are examples of successful merchants on his time. >There is also Zainab bint Jahsy who works as a tanner and Ummu Salim binti Malhan who works as a beautician. >So did Raihah, his wife Abdullah bin Mas'ud, actively working because her husband's income could not be enough the needs of his family. 4.The right to choose and determine a life partner. Therefore a marriage not based on the bride's will is illegal, so that a guardian/female parent must ask the willingness of a person women when to be married. Rasulullah saw. once said that means: "Widow it is more entitled (to marry) himself than his guardian. And a girl should asked for her own readiness''. Likewise, while in the household he built he felt treated not unfair and inhumane by her husband, a wife has the right to sue for divorce to court. 5. The right to demand knowledge. Islam highly values science and respects people who knowledgeable. In the Hadith of the Prophet it is stated which means: "Seeking knowledge is very obligatory for every Muslim, male and female.” Please compared these two: 1821 UNDER WESTERN RULE The fight for education for women saw the emergence of the first university for women in the US in 1821. In 1841 women were formally allowed fo teach in Universities. 841 UNDER ISLAMIC RULE It was Fatima al Fihriyya under the Khilafah that built the first university during 841 CE in Morocco. Science along with other various Subjects were taught in the University. Even the “Graduation robe” we used these days inspired from Islamic culture.. This one from a quick googling : The first university in Europe was established by Muslims in the year 841, in the city of Salerno (Italy). It was an extension of the Muslim unversities in the east. Then the universities in Toledo, Seville, and Granada were opened. So when the students from Europe (The Non-Muslims) learned and graduated from these universities, and returned to their lands, they used to dress in the Arab/Muslim robes (Thawb or Oamees), they imitated the dress of the Muslims, and that would become an indication that this particular young man graduated from the university of the Muslims. This imitation of wearing this Arab/Muslim garb (which is baggy and wide in its design) has stayed with them (the non-Muslims in the West) to this day (They dress in it when they graduate from the University). Jack Goody in his book titled Islam in Europe says: The Arabic clothing (Thawb) has remained as the purest and clearest sign of scholastic integrity up to this day of ours, especially during scholastic events such as the debating of university thesis, and graduations.* Also , I don’t mind at all about head covering stuff. Theres a lot of others religion covers themselves according to their scripture Mennonite nun, Amish nu , Buddhist nun , Catholic nun, Catholic Druze nun Eastern Orthodox Nun , Hindu ,Orthodox Jewis, Eastern Orthodox, Sabian, Sikh , Taoist Nun ( a lot more just do your own research) . PS : I am majoring in theology .Please do fact check as were talking about the actual religion not their followers action. All I am saying is that the more you read, travel or meeting people the more you understand certain things in life. Its not all black and white. **I am not sorry for saying this** but all these islamphobic comment is ignorant af (I got a lot of muslim friends ) .I can do a lot more whataboutism and include the real history about all others religion and extremist group but it will be pointless for you. I have seen many videos about Indonesian street food and Indonesian cooking. It’s one of the reasons I want to visit many of the islands in the nation!!!! But it’s not the only reason. I also find the people to be extremely kind and willing to share their culture. Proud of their culture in a way that is endearing and unassuming. Over the years I have had a few friends and doctors 😄 that are from different parts of Indonesia and they are among the best people I know. ❤ Since so much of our food is shaped by our culture I love how Sonny balances his videos…perfectly - 👩🏼‍🍳 💋 He does it as it should be done, so that ppl can understand why the food they eat is what they eat. What makes the people, their culture and their foods become one and why it’s so important that people learn this. I really wish that they would show these videos in Schools. US Children do not learn enough about other cultures as they grow up unless their parents teach them….or if it’s a another culture that is important in some way to the development and continued existence of the US. They teach nothing about anthropology or cultural studies in schools, except as an elective…maybe. And that’s only in high school and college. But you better know how long it will take Train A to get from London to Paris and how fast Train B would have to go to catch up and arrive at the same time. When have I ever needed to know that? And even more so….when have I ever had to use more than basic algebra in my 50 years of life? Never. That’s when. But I have met ppl that were from all over the world and felt stupid, naïve and embarrassed because I was taught nothing about them, their culture or country. Everyone is taught about the US and their ppl. Even if it’s not all correct they at least have a bit of an idea what they are dealing with and how to respond and behave. We are basically thrown onto the world and told…you figure it out. Thanks to Sonny’s videos (and others that are similar - tho I haven’t found any) children and adults from all around this globe can be ready, educated and enlightened with some real information before stepping out into that big world. So, after my little rant I guess what I want😮 to say is…Thank you, Sonny and team!!! Plz don’t stop doing what you’re doing. ❤😊

@RinaLina oh I learned about different cultures in school. The ones that directly had an effect on the US in some way. Germany, England, France, Korea, Vietnam, Japan, Cuba, a few of the indigenous N. American peoples and some of the regions of Central America. Then I learned about a lot of countries that you would typically classify as mostly white. The Soviet Union (I’m old), Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Austria, New Zealand, Australia, Hungary, and quite a few other small Europe countries. Learned about the ones that were closer/attached: Mexico, Canada, several of the islands in the Atlantic and Caribbean. Learned about the ones that we saw as potential threats or had big deals with: China, N. Korea, after the Soviet area split - Russia, Ukraine. Israel, Yemen, Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, etc… The ones that make the news the most: a lot of repeats here and some not. Getting tired of trying to remember everything I learned over 30 years ago. Then of course, we learned about the more historically significant places…like: Egypt, South Africa, several South American countries, and some repeats would go here as well. Did learn about these country’s culture? A little, but mostly we learned about their politics, their economy, the things that could potentially have an effect on the US. Did we learn about their foods? A touch…usually the broad strokes…nothing that would be beneficial in everyday life. Anything that you’d want to know about other cultures that would be of any real world use you have to lean on your own or from other ppl in your life. And I’m not saying that doesn’t happen, but it doesn’t happen enough. Too many parents in the US send their children off to school expecting them to be taught just about everything. They think that it’s the school system’s job to do most of the raising once children have hit school age. It’s not ok…but it has been happening for generations and only getting worse as time goes on. Each generation expects more of the rearing of their children to be done by society and the school systems as time goes by. It happens because we believe that since we must usually have a home where both parents work and then they have to handle everyday things on top of that, social aspects, and a plethora of other odds and ends that our govt will pick up the slack and help us mold our children into well rounded and educated adults. That is our hope, our expectation and our skewered picture of what it is to be a parent in the US. Mind you I’m not saying that’s how it is in all households, but it is the majority and that majority is growing exponentially with each generation. We need to do better and social media has shined a huge spotlight on just how much ignorance there is when it comes to the general education in the US. There is a good side to this as well! The internet and social media also has the potential to teach more people globally about other cultures and people and religions and…everything!!! So, what I was trying to say is that it should be used more effectively and more efficiently in the educational system. Not just to fill out college applications and do research on the same old things we’ve already been teaching. Broaden those horizons! Show kids videos like this. They are usually no longer than 20 mins and you could do a different country everyday!!! And it’s shown in a way that will capture their attention and they will remember the information…even if they don’t realize it at the time.

@RinaLina I’m not arguing with all that you’re saying. But what I am saying is that we can do better given the tools we now have. And yes, other countries are taught more about the US than what we are taught about them. The reason they are taught more is because the US has their hands in everything. That…and because of capitalism. Just about anywhere you go you will find many items that are well known and widely used, referred to “what they use/have in the US”. There are also specific brands that are considered the epitome of US culture. Such as McDonald’s and Coca Cola. Plus most ppl will teach their children about the US because they either see it as a land of opportunity or as a land of infidels and such. It absolutely is the topic of conversation among many ppl in many places….much more so than other countries are in the US. What it boils down to is that the US; as a whole, is pretty egocentric. So we don’t utilize the tools we now have in the best way….most ppl in charge don’t believe that we need to know anything that doesn’t directly effect us. And that is sad. Given how much more easily it is to find information about different cultures in this day and age….we should take full advantage of that. It wouldn’t hinder the educational system at all. We already have required classes from elementary through high school such as: World Cultures, Civics, World Geography, Economics, Cultural Appreciation. Teachers could easily add KZfaq videos into their curriculum when discussing the countries they cover, giving the students access to more information and more up to date information. Unfortunately the problems lies with administrators and not the teachers. Teachers don’t have a lot of freedom with their lesson plans anymore. All the public schools in the US care about is the students passing the assessment tests so they get their funding. So, they don’t teach much other than what will be covered on those tests. And no, that hasn’t gotten better over the years. It’s gotten worse. When I was school age my teachers had more freedom and I was actually taught much more about many topics than my child did during the 90’s and 2000’s.
