ABOUT THE ROOT LOCK: Mulabhanda, also known as mulbhand or the root lock, refers in western anatomy to the pelvic floor. This muscular lock which effectively closes off the lower end of the upper body, is essential in all parts of yoga, including meditation. Join me at www.discoveryourdepths.com/newsletter, and check out my Yoga for Freediving online training at www.discoveryou...
We use it to hold and direct energy during our practice. It is also essential in core strength and freedivers will benefit hugely from learning how to activate, and consciously relax, this deeper inner lock, not only for stability in the water, but also for flexibility of the diaphragm to maximise deep equalisation.
Practice mulabhanda anywhere and everywhere (it will also help you to not pee yourself when you get older! :-)
ABOUT SARA CAMPBELL : Sara is four-times World Record holding deep freediver, and currently the deepest woman in the world with a dive to 104m on one breath. She is the founder of the Discover Your Depths training philosophy, has been teaching Kundalini Yoga for over twelve years and lives in Dahab, Egypt.

CAUTION: As with all of my videos, if you're going in the water, make sure you have a recognised freediving certification first, and NEVER DIVE ALONE. Have fun guys, and keep your training safe and conservative.

Thank you for this explanation. It is very hard to engage the mulabhanda without tensing other areas!

+G. Freeman Oh, absolutely, and don't I know it! A daily journey back to the self, through meditation, seems to be the best way for me. I hope you find a way to connect with that truth too

Hi Sara, I've practiced this dry,I've never tried Freediving before, and the thought of it scares me like you won't believe, but also, I can't see the importance of Mulband??

Hello Sara! I would like to ask, if during your descend (when free diving) you engage the Root Lock or this is an exercise to do when you are out of the water. Thanks again!

Hi Konstantinos! Hmmm, you need to have core control in CWT because that is where you power is coming from in the kick-phase, but in freefall it needs to be completely relaxed so that there is no additional tension on your diaphragm, preventing it from rising up easily within your rib cage. I hope this helps, much love x Sara

Practice it dry so that you can really understand when and how to engage it when you do need it! Have fun! x

Hi Marc - the other two parts of the body to engage and then relax in Mulbhanda are : anus, and navel point/belly button. I hope seeing them written down helps you to find your way around :-) Much love x Sara
