Part 2 of our FULL BUILDING design example. We tackle the design and engineering of the wood diaphragm, including sheathing, nailing type and spacing. This is a full wood design example under seismic design criteria.
Imagine what 5000 engineers can accomplish collectively... lets find out together.

Been looking into plates and reading timoshenko and that famous monogram. What is your opinion? Rourke timoshenko monograms or fem analysis of shells.

Hey Richard, awesome video! I needed this while designing a diaphragm and shear wall. I didn't quite understand how you came up with the 48 ft "zone A" regions. I didn't get where the 48 ft number came from. Cheers

you can break up your diaphragms into sections when you have a large enough diaphragm. as you get closer to vertical lateral elements (shear walls braced frames etc) your shear demand in the diaphragm increases, but the opposite is true as you get to the mid point of the diaphragm between vertical lateral elements. so at a point you can call out a lighter diaphragm to save on nailing and potentially sheathing thickness. take a look at your shear diagram to help you determine where you can create another "zone" cheers!

Hi, I'm loving your videos, super helpful! Maybe I am interpreting something incorrectly, but at 2:35 you say our W=256' and our L=120', but then you do the aspect ratio calculation (a=L/W), you do a=256'/120' which would be W/L according to how you defined your variables. I'm brand new to this so I want to make sure I'm understanding it correctly!

its always W/L in the direction your looking at. so if you have a rectangle, then in one direction your aspect ratio will be high and in the other direction your aspect ratio will be very low. think about if the diaphragm was a piece of soft foam and your trying to bend the foam. the direction that is harder to bend has the lower aspect ratio because its stiffer.

You said 256’ is the width. Isn’t that the length? And 120 is the width?
@SouthBayEngr

Also, what actually dictates which side is the length and which is the width? The NDS shows that the length is perpendicular to the lateral force.

in short - the length and width swap with each other depending on the direction you are applying load!
