It's not just burnout. It's also my tendency to overthink. I'd be sitting doing nothing, then the need to play a game arises. When I look at the games I have, I'd overthink like "Is this enough for this session? Am I going to be able to stick to this game a bit longer? Where am I at this game again?" And such

The problem is social media addiction. Social media has screwed up our reward center and depletes our dopamine without regard for your well being. Therefore, games that don't offer instant gratification and positive feedback within the same time frame as a TikTok video or Twitter swipe can't hold our attention long enough to enjoy the experience. However, if you quit social media and detox from it, your reward center can be recalibrated. You'll find that not only can you enjoy games again, but a whole host of other hobbies and past times that you probably don't have the attention span for anymore.

I compare it to reading books. Most of our generation doesn't have the attention span for books but since the rise of social media we slowly have lost even more of our attention span even for games. Games require you to engage with it a bit where as social media is a passive engagement. I went through a period of playing single player games with a video playing in the background and really fell out of pc gaming for a bit, probably because on a console its a bit harder to multitask depending on your setup. Really scared for the next generation for when they say that they can't play video games because they dont have the attention span for it.

Engaging with games like an adult also helps, if you engage with a game mindlessly like you did like a kid only waiting for flow and dopamine rush to kick in your adult brain won't pick up. If you engage by noticing the model work, the texture work, the music, the cool program and design trick, you'll get far more from a game than you ever did when you were a kid. Learning how games are made and gaming history will make a better critique of you and make the medium more fun.

I’ve resorted to just playing Fortnite in the end due to the matches, as it’s easy to either have a short game or a really long good one. And I tell myself I’m done with playing a game. If it's not any of those things i will hardly bother, or if it appeals to me just a little then it's gotta be at least challenging, otherwise, what's the point? I also recommend playing some trash games every once in while, you gotta learn what's bad so you can appreciate the good right? Been struggling with this for years. Too many videos about this topic boil the issue down to just "burnout" without going into what that means. For me it's a mixture of overstimulation, overthinking and maybe some general depression. I'll have an hour to kill and feel the urge to play a game and work on my backlog. I'll spend 10 minutes debating whether I should, 15 minutes actually picking a game and by the time I start it I have no attention span to learn new mechanics or pay attention to the story. I think about how it would take 20-50 hours to beat this game and just quit being overwhelmed with the thought that I wont even make any progress. I'll end up playing a few matches of Battlefield or a few races in Gran Turismo. But most likely I'll just crawl into bed and doomscroll. I also think the new advent of the gamepass model and free games have eroded the special feeling of having/playing games.

I think part of the issue is simplicity, or some case the perception of simplicity. When we were kids we didn't overthink things. We got a game, we sat down, we played it, we had fun. And that was it. We didn't try to nitpick the hell out of it, we didn't try to analyze it, most people weren't trying to optimize the living hell out of the experience. We just knew how to sit down and have fun. But now everybody is a critic and so many people spend so much time not just playing games but obsessing, theory crafting, or scrutinizing them. Which leads to path of least resistance. Do we sit down to a new game and open our mind to having to learn the new mechanics, analyze, and overthink about everything involved? Or do we go back to those old classics we already know and love or that comfort game we play regularly. I think this is where the problem is. People have gotten so accustomed to overthinking that it permeates the hobby and then any new game becomes like work because there is all sorts of new things to have to learn and fixate over compared to the simplicity of just playing those old games we already know by heart. Even in cases where those old games might have similar or potentially more complexity than the new game we are trying to play we already know that old game so it's a much easier and less stressful barrier to entry. So I would say discipline is good but more in having the discipline to just force yourself to stop overthinking and just play the game. Don't worry about if your build is perfect, if you are doing things in the most optimal way, or worrying about all the things you don't understand yet. Just play the game you want to play and take it one step at a time and it becomes a lot easier to enjoy.

I think that I tend to overthink a lot of things. Thinking about playing optimally to save time, how much playing will satisfy my dopamine, is playing just like working? Do I play to gain achievements or play to enjoy the story? Having games go on sale, hearing them sound like a good investment from someone else is really pressuring since you have money and time that you want to invest but if you play and don't enjoy it or play it long enough to the point that it doesn’t give you anything then you are at a loss of time and enjoyment. As a kid, there are big games that I used to drench hundreds of hours in because of how little money I had so I would take time to learn a game, tolerate it and after enough time say "look how far I got and how much I did to get here". Minecraft, Yakuza Like a Dragon, Persona 5, Pokémon, Xenoverse, Infamous, .Hack// and even Final Fantasy 7 Remake are good games that kept my attention and made me feel complete for taking my time and spending hundreds of hours. In the end, it's not about achievements, being number 1 or appealing to others, it's about the journey to get to that destination. Was that journey one that got you something?

I think the big issue with a lot of modern releases is that they are either designed to be overstimulating on purpose (See Fortnite), or the is designed to eat all of your time by overloading you with things to do (see Farcry 6). I had an absolute BLAST with Armored Core 6 because the game gave its content out one mission at a time, and ended exactly when it needed to. Do I wish I had more? Sure. Do I think the game should have been 100 hours long instead of 30? No, never.

From my pov, if you want to have fun in games. Play different games with friends. With different i mean. Genre's of (multiplayer)games you don't play normally. Go play chess, or a bitgame. Mario galaxy instead of call of duty. Bro idk. Just play different genres. People think because their childhood game is call of duty it is their main game forever. But no your taste just changes. You just don't want to accept it. I used to play call of duty my whole childhood. Until my 18th birthday. When i didn't have much friends to play with anymore. I switched over to a soul game because i thought it would be nice to play a single player game for ones. And boy gaming got fun lol. I played for hours. After a couple of days playing singleplayer games i started call of duty. left after 2 games...

Everything's Competes for our Full Attention, so they optimize it to make it literally addicting. There are some Type of Media that gives a bigger Satisfaction than others, and we prioritize the one that gives the most Satisfaction for the lowest effort. It means that Gaming is rewarding but requires effort for it and this competes with the Social Medias Low Effort High Reward. As long as you Consume it responsible and in moderation you can gt enjoyment out of simple things in Life ;D

That Discipline thing for playing video games is so true mate! But I also want to add that if your'e in a phase of life where you are just pausing on things that need to be done, like say you've been preparing for SAT for the last 1 year...playing video games is going to give you " GUILT " instead of fun. So I'd recommend you to just do things in your life that need to be done and then at the end of the day or every week play video games...because of course life is so much more beautiful after your exams! cheers! P.S : I always keep a timer of 30-40 mins to play my games and after that session it really feels so rewarding and also the fact that you've respected your time is also fulfilling...For some of us can no longer even play video games for an hour straight...

It's nice that you put in ways to improve your life in a very manageable way. Instead of just talking about the negatives, your video goes into helping the viewer and in the very least some people will be able to get better. Talking about recording your actions in a day will really help some people and I think I'm going to try and do that as well, because video games actually help me to get out a lot of stress and I want to return to them as well as develop better habits.

Having two devices mainly phones is really useful, a main that has your (e)sim that's is just has the apps you need for your day to day life and second device that's WiFi only for everything else, mainly social media or other apps that you can turn off without the fear of missing something important. Also don't be afraid to turn the brain rot device off, if something is big enough you'll see it on a news site.

By that logic, people who do things for fun; be it cooking, painting, gardening, playing an instrument or anything else that is not lucrative is considered "wasted time". Time you spend on a hobby is NOT wasteful, you just think it is because you were programmed your entire life to think school and work are the only thing that give meaning to your life, and you feel guilty because of that. Don't think that. Enjoy these moments because you never know what life brings, and one day you might not be able to do them anymore, or as much as you would like to.

Man, thank you for this video. I recently have been thinking of all stimulation I give my brain daily and how much I am fatigued of my hobbies (not only video games) and your video appeared. At first I always tend to think that discipline our hobbies is a thing of late capitalism but when I started to look at my habits I started to understand that we destroyed our brains so much with dopamine shots that our cellphones gives us everything we spend on social media or whatever activity we do in front of the screen that in fact we have a addiction (or something in those lines), and addiction is ended with discipline. I always struggled with creating a strategy to beat this and your video presents one form of doing this, it seems hard but I know I'm a dedicated person. I just wanted to thank you for saying what most people don't in favor of living comfortable.

Social media has ruined my attention span and self discipline. Catastrophizing, overthinking and comparing my life to that of those on the internet are traits fairly common amongst people who are struggling with social media addiction and poor dopamine systems. There's too much to chose from now, its overwhelming. My solution has been to not be a passive consumer, but consciously choosing to consume media that will benefit and enlighten me. Nearly two years ago, I was run over by an SUV and nearly died. It changed how I saw the world, I grew disinterested in social media, movies, and television. I hated simply spectating, I wanted control. That's when I discovered video games, I hadn't played them much since childhood. After the accident I played MGSV, Disco Elysium and BG3, each of them became a kind of spirit journey, each one imparted me with wisdom about myself and the feelings and experiences I was grappling with. So too do the books I choose serve a purpose bigger than passing time. I read about my own medical and psychological conditions, I broaden my perspective on the world. Try to choose things not simply for entertainment.

Great video and for anyone really serious about cultivating mental discipline I recommend taking up a meditation practice.
