Yeah, it drives me nuts they haven't changed this. Instead, they should ask "Do you also want to enroll in Social Security benefits? Yes/No" No one would have issues with that question.

Everything you hear will mention 3 months prior...but you can submit it in the 4 months prior to your birthday month. So the April 15th birthday example you gave can submit the application as early as December 1st 2023 for benefits to begin 4/1/24. Glad you found the video helpful. 😄

It depends on the timing. If you're turning 65 and in your 7-month initial enrollment period, it won't matter. But if you're more than 8 months after separating from the employer, technically you can't submit a special enrollment period application for Part B. You would have to wait until the general enrollment period between 1/1 - 3/31 to sign up for Part B. You would likely have a late enrollment penalty in that situation. I guess it depends on how your employer would fill out form L564. If they show you as an active employee still, then you're okay. But if they show you separated more than 8 months ago, that's not good.

If existing coverage is a retiree plan (NOT based on CURRENT employment), then you simply answer NO to that section and get to skip all those questions about group health coverage. Go to the 7:00 mark where this is specifically mentioned. Don't overthink it.

You can submit the application in the 4 months leading up to your birthday month. 2.) Once you have confirmation that your Part A & Part B are active for 1/1/23 (and you have your Medicare #, which is on your Medicare card)...you can enroll in a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan...if that's the plan type you decided on. Also, you mention you're still employed. If the employer has 20+ employees, the plan doesn't cost you too much, and the coverage is great...then you don't have to leave your employer plan. So did you enroll in Part A only, or both Part A & B?

For the employer group coverage question, answer it based on what's true today when you're filing out the application. But really the answers you put for that question won't matter, as you're turning 65...it's irrelevant.

If you have NOT started the application, then don't do so until the month of November. November is the 5th month of your initial 7-month enrollment period in Medicare. Enrolling in month 5 automatically yields a 2-month delayed Part B start date...which is perfect in your case (1/1/23 start). But again, this will only work if you haven't started the application yet. If you can start and finish it in November, you'll get a 10/1/22 Part A start and a 1/1/23 Part B start. Okay, glad to hear you haven't started the application yet. So literally DO NOT start this until early November. Normally, you can leave the Remarks section blank, but it's a good idea in your case to make it clear that you understand your Part B will be delayed 2 months and start 1/1/23. So say something like this..."I understand that by submitting my application in November (month 5 of my Initial Enrollment Period), my Part B will be delayed 2 months and begin January 1st, 2023". Then the SSA rep who processes your enrollment knows you are aware of the delay.

Mike - I believe it sounds like your 65th birthday is in February 2024? If so, October 2023 is the earliest you can submit an application for Medicare benefits...to begin 2/1/24. Let me know if I misunderstood the timing.

I figured it out. Since she didn’t sign up during her initial enrollment period when she turned 65, and open enrollment is closed, the system will not let her sign up for Medicare. But she qualifies under an SEP (due to her employment ending) so we need to manually fill out the forms and drop them at our local SSA office.

Assuming your employer has 20+ employees and you're NOT contributing a Health Savings Account...you can enroll in Part A ONLY and say NO to Part B on the application. Then when you want to add Part B later for the future, I recommend submitting the two required forms to your local SSA office about 2-3 months prior to when you want it to start. @@MedicareMindset I do have a Health Savings Account that I am contributing to and my Employer provides a match up to a certain amount. That was the reason I wanted to stay on my employer's health plan. It is a high deductible plan. Maybe it would be better than if I just signed up for Medicare Part A and B at this point?

In your case, the only way to get a 7/1/24 Part B start date, you would have to wait to submit the application until June. June is month 7 of your IEP, so enrolling that month will yield a 7/1/24 Part B start date. Do you have Part A already? If so, just turn in Form 40B in early June at your local SSA office. Note: They often try to tell people they need form L564 also, but kindly remind them that you are still in your IEP, so Form L564 is not required. If you don't have Part A yet, since it's already May right now...I would just wait until very early June to start and submit the application for A&B. Part A will backdate to 3/1/24 and Part B will automatically start 7/1/24. They will turn it around in time. But you'll likely need to get your Medicare # from your Benefit Verification Letter in your SSA account. You will see that much faster than the card will arrive by mail. If you're covered on a group plan based on retirement, then you would answer NO to the very first question on that page and move forward. The sub-questions about start and end dates wouldn't even show up or be relevant in your situation.

Kari - Because you don't have the quarters, you can't enroll in Medicare online. You need to enroll by phone or in-person with SSA. Part A will be as high as $500/mo, though. But it will be no premium if you have a spouse who is age 62+ and they have the 40 quarters. You can also get Part B at the normal rate, like everyone else (based on income)...which starts at $164.90/mo this year. Please re-watch the first two minutes of this video, as it mentions these items. Thanks! :)

It's definitely frustrating when the SSA website is down or having issues. We certainly have no control over that. But the application part is quite simple.

@@andystamas we found out that you can only have one online application at a time and if you have a pending application for disability benefits you need a separate phone appointment for Medicare. Don't know if you knew that .

We're sorry to hear you're dealing with IRS debt, but there hasn't been a penalty for not having health insurance since 2018. This isn't applicable anymore. But maybe you're referring to a different "penalty".

@@MedicareMindset For the last two years after doing w2s and taxes with hrblock they tell me that I owe the federal government a large sum of money because I'm not paying for any health insurance during the year. My employer doesn't take money from my paycheck for health insurance. My federal refunds are basically in the negative amount which is now what I owe the federal government and its because I don't have health insurance to pay towards. The IRS just sends me a paper in the mail with an envelope to mail them the money they say I owe them.

Great! Yes, answer the employment question based on what is true today...that you're still employed and still covered on that group plan. Employment has not ended, and coverage has not ended at this moment. Coverage will begin 8/1/23...assuming your bday is between Aug 2nd-31st. Then you can either drop off the group plan 8/1/23, since Medicare starts then...OR...have one month of overlap coverage and drop the group plan 9/1/23 and start supplemental coverage.

IF you qualify for Social Security disability benefits and receive those benefits for 24 months, then you will become eligible for Medicare Parts A & B. But you'll have to work with the Social Security Administration to see if you meet their definition of disability. Take care.

The questions apply to the employment that provides group health insurance...your husband's employment.

If you're covered on a group health plan based on active employment through you or your spouse...AND the employer has 20+ employees...Medicare A & B enrollment is optional. Should you get Part A? As long as you don't contribute to a Health Savings Account (HSA). If you do contribute, then you don't want Part A yet. Add it later, as well as Part B, when you come off the group plan. NOTE: Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) are fine. You can have Medicare and not impact your FSA contributions.

So if you're enrolling in Medicare for the first time, but AFTER your initial enrollment period, then you'll need to first submit the online application for Parts A & B at www.ssa.gov. It sounds like you've done that or are about to. Then submit Forms 40B and L564 to a local SSA office to complete your enrollment. Assuming you're enrolling in Medicare A&B, and NOT Social Security retirement benefits, follow Scenario #2 on our Special Enrollment Period page: www.medicaremindset.com/sep The two forms you need are downloadable through that link.

Thanks for your question. Unfortunately, she needs to live in the US for at least 5 years. And even still, Part A would be full price (about $500/mo) because she doesn't have the 40+ quarters (10yrs of work) paid into Medicare taxes. I recommend looking into Medicaid benefits through your state dept of Medicaid.

At the 9:10 mark, it shows the final page of the application where you can review your answers. Then just below that is the Electronic Signature Agreement section. Click the box that you agree and then click Submit Now.

Thanks for reaching out. Since you're on Social Security benefits and have a 65th birthday in August 2024, you'll get your Medicare card in the mail around mid-April 2024. So be on the lookout then. Many Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan carriers allow you to enroll up to 6 months prior to your start date, but we prefer to just enroll folks about 3 months prior, as the 3-month window before your birthday month is when you can enroll in a Part D drug plan. So we recommend doing both the Medigap and Part D plan enrollments in the 3-months leading up to your birthday month.

You'll be eligible for Medicare as of 12/1/22. If you decide to also start Social Security retirement benefits, you'll choose the month you want benefits to start. And then your first check will hit your bank account the month AFTER the month you select in the system. The date you receive your benefits is based on your birthday. Birthdays between the 1st-10th are paid around the 2nd Wednesday of the month. So if you choose a December 2022 Social Security start, your benefits will hit your bank account around the 2nd Wednesday of January 2023. But as mentioned before, your Medicare can start as early as 12/1/22...assuming you enroll leading up to December 2022.

If you turn 65 on January 1st, you're actually eligible December 1st, 2024. So it's the 4 months prior to December when you can start to enroll (that would be as early as August 1st, 2024 to submit the application). Yes, I know that seems weird, but it's correct. As long as you don't contribute to an HSA (Health Savings Account), you can surely enroll in Part A ONLY. But if you do contribute to an HSA, then consider NOT enrolling in ANY Medicare while you're on the group health plan based on your active work. Then you can add Parts A & B later without penalty. NOTE: When you eventually enroll in Medicare and/or Social Security in the future, Part A will be backdated 6 months, so watch out. That will negatively impact your HSA contribution eligibility. If your mom is turning 65 in November 2022, then no it's not too early. She is definitely in her 7-month initial enrollment period (3 months before, month of bday, 3 months after). The application needs to be done at ssa.gov. I'm not sure where you're getting stuck in the process, though. Does she have a SSA.gov account? That's required first Did you click the Medicare square on the front page of www.ssa.gov? Did you scroll down and click "Apply for Medicare Only"? And did you start the application after that and subsequently logging into her SSA account? If so, then you're in and good to complete the rest using our instructions from this video.

Thanks. Start off with the Forgot Username process...enter the necessary information to confirm the username. Then do the Forgot Password process using the username you just confirmed. That usually works to get back into an account...but you definitely need to know the email address that was used to create the account in the first place. If nothing works, then you would need to reset with help from SSA by calling them at 800-772-1213. Good luck!
