Awesome review and appreciate the clarity. A lot of my boxes needed conductors extended. The installer used wire nuts without cleaning paint off the copper and had to be trimmed. Yet another benefit of wago style splice as it’s less destructive to the wire when you need to make changes. I do like the ideal lever nuts over wago as the lever feels far more reliable.

When splicing a short wire, I've found that It's a good idea to tape the Wago levers shut to prevent them from accidently opening. I then fold the spliced wire at the back of the box. If additional wires need to be connected, I create pigtails and use a 3 or 5 space Wago connector.

In-line lever lock connectors are great for extending short wires, but they're still not as compact as a butt splice. However, the problem with butt splices are that you often can't get the crimping tool in there to crimp them because the wires are so short. Does anyone make a Push-In type in-line connector? They would be almost as compact as a butt splice but would not require crimping.
@brianpurchase7799

IDEAL makes an inline push in connector that is about 25% shorter but nearly twice the width. They should work just as well, unless the wire is so short, you can’t hold it to put while splicing.

to me the downside of the straight splice would be that it has twice the rigid length of the lever nut. sometimes that will be more of a problem than needing a little extra tail for the lever nut. but certainly the worst splice to use in this situation is the hardware store compression splices they can rarely be made secure in that situation.

Is there a limit to how many wire extensions you can do in one box? I use WAGOs when doing my DIY electrical work. Their splicer device looks great, but it seems to be on the long side. @@SparkyChannel I'd rather bring the other wire and the short wire to the connector and pigtail from there, rather than lengthening a short wire, connecting it to another and pigtailing from there. @@SparkyChannel Imagine a junction box with 2 cables coming into it, each with hot, neutral and ground. Now imagine if I wanted to pigtail the black wires, I'd add a pigtail and connect the other two black wires together with my pigtail. Even if one of them was short, I'd leave it short and arrange it so the other would reach and then I'd pigtail. What Paul was asking is if he could lengthen a short wire, join it to another and pigtail it. So he is using 2 wire connectors to do what I was doing with one.
@SparkyChannel
@SparkyChannel Жыл бұрын
@@illestofdemall13 I see. Thanks for taking the time to explain that. Yes, I would do the same as it's one less wire connector and it achieves the same result. What do you do if the goof before you cut the ground wire right at the entrance to the box? (ie: not connected to anything, barely 1/4" visible in the box ) ? Fortunately for me, they were as sloppy as they were dumb and there was ~2-3" of slop in the wall so I could pull a bit more into the box to connect it to the box's ground screw and then add a pigtail to that to the outlet. Not sure if that is proper code these days, but the outlet tester settled down and stopped complaining about an open ground.

loosen the wire clamp and see if you can pull it in more wire, if your lucky there will be an extra 6" of loose wire you can pull into the box (called a service loop)

@@ydnark83 Interesting. It was janky all around. Have not lived there for over 15 years. But the wiring in that house was..... special. One outlet did not have any ground coming to it - very old 2 conductor, no ground wire with very fragile insulation. Wire was behind a tiled wall. The hack that was done there was to tie neutral and ground together in the box so the outlet tester was happy (although I suspect no inspector would be!).

Your interpretation is taking the wires and bending them 90 degrees in one direction and then measuring 3" in either direction, but does the interpretation need to mean 'bend the wires' and go 3" from either side of the opening? Couldn't it just mean that the wires need to extend 3" straight out from the opening in the wall"?

I don't know why they did that. The add-on bedroom in my house has the receptacle box wires cut so short you can barely attach them. Not even enough length to use a traditional wire nut. As Jason said, the butt splice has to be listed for that application. And what I consider key is, are you sure you can install it properly? A lot of folks use simple butt splices with crude pliers-like crimpers and don't get a proper crimp. And some of the proper crimping tools can be too costly for the average DIYer. While WAGO may cost a tad more, the installation of them is dead simple as Sparky shows.

I have been using the typical Butt splice connectors for 35+ years in low voltage applications. I have the correct crimpers and knowledge. I personally do not care for the wago style of connector as I've seen too many ofnthose type have weak connection and when higher current is pulled thtough them, they tend to get crispy over time. I understand they are NEC compliant but we all know of similar compliant items that fail over time/useage.

Good info, however, the reasoning you gave for preferring one Wago connector over another wasn't really justified as you can make the extending pigtail the length it needs to be depending on the connector/splice you are using. Personally, I would measure the length of new wire (pigtail) I needed from the back of the box so I would have the required length with the splice point sitting at the back of the box (out of the way).

I think you are missing a bit form that code. The 3 inches past the outside of the box apply only if the opening of the box is larger than 8" in either direction. So I take that to mean like a large 8" box for splicing in a false ceiling of attic. Then the wires don't have to be 6" long just extend past the opening 3 inches.
@reportingsjr
@reportingsjr Жыл бұрын
Heads up, you have this backwards. It says if the opening is _less than_ 200mm in any dimension, then the 150mm past the opening rule applies. So for an 8" box it doesn't need to extend past the opening, but a standard duplex box would need it to.
