A short excerpt from our Wednesday Langes Messer class where I show students how to throw convincing feints during compound attacks. The concept of "faking" relies on us as fencers thinking ahead. We can "program" our opponents by trying to get them to commit to certain actions while we go the other way a split second later. The higher skilled the fighter is, the more steps ahead you should be. Try thinking 3 or more steps ahead and let us know if it improves your sparring. Happy Training

Thanks! Sometimes we get lucky when we swing swords around. It's best to see if you can do it again and again.

@Ludus Ferocia you do realize you've thoroughly destroyed a out a 1/3 of the manuscripts with this btw? You've also emboldened the other 2/3rds and I thank you. Sooooooo much more sense is taken from them all when that concept is assigned as law. I've spent this entire time since you posted this to think about it and it's horrifyingly effective

A note from Germany.: In current german, few people would call a thing with such a long blade Messer, which means simply knife. The times have changed. Sometimes you still can see descendants of Großes Messer in Germany. A long hunting knife called nowadays Hirschfänger is sometimes used as ceremonial weapon by old hunters, but this became rare.

This is fascinating information. Thank you. People sometimes called them "hunting swords"? Or was that something else?

@@ludusferocia8696 : A question, where an answer in one sentence is impossible. In medieval Germany only members of nobility ( Graf/ count or higher rank), knights and few members of townsmen upperclass had the right of hunting. Still in current german hunters terminology there is a difference between Hochwild/ high game and Niederwild/ low game. High game: Formerly only allowed for high noblemen, low game- formerly only allowed for knights and rich commoners. So in late medieval/ early Rennaissnce Germany ( Holy Roman Empire) the Bauernwehr ( farmers weapon/ farmers defence) a long knife similar to germannic seax or Bowie knife, was most common edged sidearm of german commoners. It was used mostly as butchers knife, AS kitchen knife, as harvest knife, as tool for woodwork, and when necessary as weapon. The larger type, Großes Messer was a pure weapon, but still allowed for poor townsmen, and even for ,unfree' farmers, when they had the money. But the crushing down of 1525 Great German farmers rebellion caused that farmers lost the right of owning real bladed sidearms. In this Periode the Langes Messer turned into the Dussack/ Jagdschwert ( hunting sword) . Those descendants of Langes Messer, produced in late 16th century/ mid 17th century had often curved blades, and decorated handles, but had been civilian weapons for hunting or self defence. But ordinary german commoner had only his EDC knife, sticks or tools as weapons. In 18th century the Dussack became Hirschfänger. Like Bauernwehr/ Großes Messer a single edged blade, and the Nagel/ nail replaced by a shell piece. Up to failed Revolution of 1848/49 the Hirschfänger was only allowed for noblemen, knights, forrest officials ( Förster) and professional hunters. Hirsch means in english language deer ( gerrman Tier means annimal) and abfangen means douing final stab. So in current german, hunting sword is no more used. After wwll german hunters no more wanted to look warriorlike, so long hunting knives came out of favour. . The second type of large gerrman ( austrian) hunting knives is Standhauer/ Waidblatt. This is a Mix of small Machete, billhook and butchers cleaver. Few companies still produce Waidblätter. The third type of german hunting knife is the Nicker. Genick means neck. Those knives are usually not longer than 5". Formerly, until 1980s, some old guys carried such Nicker.

A lot of people think what I said in this video is a reference to covid. It wasn't. It is just a saying I've been using to train people for years in regards to luck vs skill. You can land a hit at any point with luck. But repeatable results shows skill. Unsure of it's relation to covid.

"nothing exists unless it's repeatable" found the covid vaxxed youtuber. Is your birth repeatable? Then I guess you don't exist! great display of technique. pretty cool to show the bloopers. Really cool to feel the difference between "making it look easy" and "whoa that technique actually looks hard to learn" later. Do you think it's practical in life & death combat? Cheers!

I actually don't understand the reference. The saying is something I've just been saying to those I train for years. If you do it once, it's luck. If you can do it over and over, it's a skill. Nothing more. Thank you for the comment. It's a lot of fun to show how Messer techniques might have been practiced. In terms of life or death, I think it could be. We do a lot of tactical fighting stuff on our other channel but I try to base what I teach in s mix of historical sources and practical interpretation. Thanks again for the interest!

did you just make a martial arts advice in hema about covid? hardcore hilarious. it's also such a flawed logic, any system of any kind needs repeatable actions to create a system. what is your point, that a system also exists when the same action does NOT end in the same result? "hey my car doesn't work when it's broken, found the covid vaxxed car manufactorer"

@@BaeBox I actually did not know that saying was a covid reference at all. A lot of people are saying it is a reference to something but I'll be honest, in out of the loop with all that. It is a saying I've been using when training people for years referring to skill vs luck.
