This video has very important information about feeding your family milk cow. We cover how we maintain a grass-fed dairy herd and feed a fermented grain ration when needed.
How to feed your family cow impacts not only her health but the milk she provides for your family.
Happy Milking,
Caren

Thanks for sharing. I grew up on. Holstein 600 cow dairy 40 years ago and my daughter in law just got a Jersey so we are starting back over. Your information was useful and appreciated. Take care and hope you have a blessed day and weekend.

Karen, I am ALWAYS ready to see a video from you. I will watch this video many times as this addresses so many questions I’ve had regarding my Jersey girl Bessie. We live in central Louisiana and our pastures are far from being what they should be. Bessie was bred to a Red Devon (all of our cattle are Red Devon’s). She calved a beautiful little heifer this past May. She’s been an awesome Moma and accepts any of the other calves that want to nurse. The Devon cows accept each others calves as well. I can honestly say I’ve not see this before ! Anyway, I need to study more on assessing body conditioning (so I’ll be visiting the Penn state article(s) and would find it so valuable to study bovine nutrition. The holistic international management program on how to manage grazing sounds like something I need. Having a cow (or herd) requires continuous education. Thank you so much for the well thought out video. Keep up the good work there are many that benefit from your lessons. Kindest regards, Renee Russell.

Thank you Renee for your kind words. It is so wonderful you have your Jersey cow Bessie. Yes, there is definitely a learning curve that actually never ends. I am a student of the family cow. There are many programs out there to enrich your knowledge and some are online. We are happy the video added some benefit to you and thank you for watching!

Thank you so much!!! My Gracie Mae looks so much like your cow, right down to the curve of her horns and the darker face. I had planned on doing the same thing with calving in the spring and not milking through the winter. We are in central PA so my reasons are likely different for this.

I hope you see this. Ive been binging your videos. We are SE Texas and about to get our mid size Jersey from Waco. I have a few questions. -where do buy your big jug of molasses? -what is that huge bag in your patio? Alfalfa pellets? -is there a Milo and Barley that doesn’t have to be ground d that you would suggest?

Hello and thank you for watching! The jug of molasses is from Azure Standard. The tote in my barn is organic alfalfa pellets from Coyote Creek in Elgin, Texas. I don't know of any source for milo and barley that comes milled. Azure Standard has some choices of different grains. Congratulations on getting a milk cow! Thank you, Caren

Am in Texas also now and man this drought is longggg. Would love to have a family milk cow, where is a good place to get one that is somewhat trained/used to being milked already? Would like to start with a miniature jersey bc cows seem well large up close 😂

Yes, the dry weather is very long. Having a cow is wonderful and hard to find. We focus on disease-free dairy cows and I don't really know of anyone at the moment that does this. I am going to a cheese class at Homestead Heritage this weekend and I will ask around. I am sure there will lots of milkmaids. The Jersey breed is a smaller breed and would be a perfect cow for you. Thank you for watching!

Hi Karen....what is your opinion of using New Zealand genetics when breeding cows for a family milk cow?
@texasfarmsteadliving-caren9517
@texasfarmsteadliving-caren9517 7 ай бұрын
Back ten years ago our herd bull "Bruno" was from Holt Creek Jerseys and they use New Zealand genetics because their genetics are grass-based. I think Bruno was a grandson of a bull with New Zealand genetics. At the present our herd bull's sire is Holterholm Lieutenant and I believe New Zealand genetics are in his lineage. Based on our 20 years of grass-based, the family milk cows have an adequate amount of milk produced on grass. The conventional cows might make 8 gallons daily but that comes with lots of drawbacks, and they usually must be supplemented with grain. So yes I think New Zealand genetics are a good idea. I also check the health status of any bull even AI straws. We have a video about this: "Before you buy a family milk cow learn about these 8 diseases". I talk about bulls in this video. The video "How to choose a dairy bull for your family milk cow". will give resources and teach you how to determine genetic traits with a Punnett square. So important when choosing genetics. Looks like I have a long opinion but hope this helps. Thank you for watching! Best, Caren
