In this video Justin talks about squaring off against long weapons, specifically the Guan Dao. We cover issues of reach, as well as leverage against a longer and two handed weapon. We touch on combat and sparring engagement of the bigger weapon so that traditional weapons fighters can start to break down that distance barrier. For more full speed traditional weapon fighting check out our Traditional Weapons Club at:

I like this kind of videos. I practice historical european martial arts, and I enjoy comparing the european with the chinese armed combat. I would like to see sparrying with traditional weapons, like the dao and jang (my favorite sword from Asia).

Very good video. I'd love to see a broadsword vs guan dao sparring video, or application demonstration video, shot at close and varied camera angles :) I know you did a sparring video.... also, are you recording this on an Iphone? I know how difficult it is finding a good solution for audio recording, when you want to film outside with lots of movement.... the one I found is very cheap and pretty solid. Get some microphone foam from a pair of earplugs or something, do some test recordings while blowing on the phone to find out where the mic is located, then use two rubber bands to put the foam in place in front of the mic hole (without having the rubber band block the lense).... (I think your content on broadsword techniques especially is a bit unique on KZfaq and very valuable, so I felt I have to give something back :) Hope it helps)

Great vid, just too bad with the wind. Very annpying to deal with when recording outside, I've faced the same problem when recording for my project Zen-Dragon.

I'd say you are dead on in how to deal with a spear or staff, but heavy weapons really are a different animal in defending. Any kind of real block against a full weight heavy weapon has a very strong likelihood of caving, and even if you augment the block with the other hand, or use a cradle and head wrap, if the heavy weapon hits the dao, its going to hit you and the kinetic energy of the strike will just pass through the blade and in to your body. I've used full weight quandao and monk spade before. When they move, they keep going and going. While blocks don't work well, parries are great against a long heavy weapon as it takes so much less energy to change the vector of the strike. Just a thought. Thanks for the great vids

Need to have better structure on that block or it won’t matter if you make contact or not before moving in.

Not meaning to offend with this question, as I like your videos, particularly saber vs saber. Its good to see people trying to re-engineer actual Chinese swordsmanship since its a lost art in kungfu, regardless how many think they are learning swordsmanship through forms. But. Through what source are you using to decipher dao technique against polearms? Legends be as they are, you only need to look at a form to know that the majority of techniques used in kungfu are derived from civilian use (if that, I imagine a lot of it is civilian theorizing of use). While males in feudal China were required to serve in the military, and could have been exposed to various skills through such means (and later passing them to civilians through MA training), we know that formations were as integral in Chinese military tactics as any other culture. And we know that the majority of weapons techniques practiced in Asian martial arts are not suited for use within ranks. We also know that while long weapons like spear retained use, projectile weapons were the main weapon of Chinese infantry. And we also can't discount the various legal issues for civilians when it comes to owning weapons. So, with the above stated and given the lack of historical reference of using civilian saber technique against polearms in China, how are you deciphering the appropriate techniques? Are you basing from your background in Western fencing?

+c johnson No offense taken, in fact this is a great question! You are absolutely correct in that there is not a lot of reference material for guan dao vs saber. The truth is, other than the few kung fu forms out there featuring the weapon, there is not a lot of information on the guan dao as it wasn't that common of a weapon. For military use the spear was favored as it served better in formations due to its linear path (see also the movements of xing yi quan). Much of this information is distilled from the saber form itself, especially when compared to the guan dao form. There is a lot of sweeping and passing movement seen in the saber from, and when compared to the reaching movements of the guan dao form you can discover where the two line up. Much of the discussion of timing and leverage come more from applied experience in both Eastern and Western armed combat. One of the purposes of our Traditional Weapons Club is to put various weapons up against each other and see what actually works! It's not always lifted entirely from historical sources, but it is based on the fundamental techniques taught within each weapon, and then informed by practical, full-speed fight experience. In a couple days we're actually going to be putting out a video of us fighting full speed with these two weapons and you can see some of what we're talking about! Thanks for the thoughtful questions and please keep them coming!

Can you please cover stabs/pokes? I see it in a lot of wushu forms and while I understand that wushu is primarily show, I would like to see your take on it. Thanks for your time.

We'd be happy to! Are you asking about stabs with the broad sword, or the guandao? Or both?
