What the hell is purpose? Why does it matter? Where are we going? Why are we here?
I can’t feel my legs.
Purpose is a concept that’s often misunderstood. A lot of people email me about purpose, they come to me with questions about what their meaning in life is, how do they find their one true calling, how do they get a greater sense of meaning through their actions.
So it was with this never-ending stream of lost souls reaching out to a stranger on the internet trying to find their purpose that I thought I should probably make an entire course about how to do it.
This video is Lesson 1 from the Find Your Purpose course in my premium membership. I start off by sharing how much I actually fucking hate the term ‘purpose’, before getting very clear about what purpose is, and why it’s important. Ironic, amiright?
If you like what you see here, maybe consider heading over to my website and signing up for a monthly or yearly membership so you can check out the whole course.
You’ll thank me when you stop chasing your tail.

I’m in my mid 70s. I’ve had several careers, done well and am now at a point where I’m asking what difference did I make. You’ll never know if you have been an influence if you go out and actively seek the answer. In my case I was with a few fellows that I had worked with. We had been some situations that were quite literally life and death events I was their officer and I always believed that the guys were less than enthusiastic to have me command them. During our conversation they told me that they were glad to have me lead them because despite the fact that I was stern I’d always made sure that they would get home alive. At that moment I knew my purpose had been and continues to be to protect those near and dear to me. It’s good to be alive.

this is probably the best definition of "purpose/meaning" I have found in the entire internet. No amount of religious parable, or Jordan Peterson intellectual explanation, or nootropic recommendation, none of that explained it like... purpose is the feeling that you aren't wasting your time doing stupid shit. When your time is well spent and you feel that what you are working on is challenging and meaningful to you in that moment, then you have created purpose for yourself. Love this! It's real and practical. No woo-woo cosmic religious bs.

I've been re-building my life after rehab (for about 8 years). I was a pro sax player for many years, which were great when I wasn't wrecked. But I lost a gig due to drinking that I very much enjoyed, and when that ended, I felt as if my life was over. I almost drank myself to death over this and losing a boyfriend. After working on myself for a couple of years, I found that I preferred guitar over sax. I also learned how to make wire wrapped jewelry. Both have become incredible activities, helping me to reinvent myself. So, I can completely relate to this video, because I lost what I strongly felt was my "purpose" in life - and with a clear head, I found that just thinking of myself as a "sax player" had been holding me back from doing the things I love even more. Awesome video, as always!!

This is great! I told my best friend a couple of years ago that asking the "meaning of life" is a very juvenile question, in my opinion. I told him that the meaning of life is what you make it to be; it's not something that literally falls into your lap or where you have an epiphany and you're set for the rest of your life. It's something that we are continually figuring out, and can create for ourselves. Thanks Mark!

The core of human happiness (aside from not struggling to not starve/be homeless) is meaningful connection to people around you (being reciprocably vulnerable, open and communicative with one another), pushing yourself a bit to grow beyond your comfort zone in many areas but especially those that grab you, and then paying open and appreciative attention to the world around you.

Purpose: deciding that something is important and doing it because you feel it is important. Purpose can be found anywhere. People actually mean "I want to spend my time on important things." More than efficiency tactics or strategies, it is important to establish that something is important before it is worth dealing with. Purpose is an ongoing creation. You can have many purposes in life. Purpose changes and evolves through time. Purpose doesn't solve everything. It gives meaning to deal with most things. Creating purpose: Spending your time and meaningful challenges. Long term purpose is something that you see as bigger than yourself and something you are willing to sacrifice things for. Values, perspective.

There are only individuals in this world so there is no general formula for purpose. I observed myself as my life goes on and figured out what makes me happy. Rescuing a dog or a cat gave me more happiness that any amount of money could. Helping a friend or a girlfriend becoming the best version of themselves made me very happy. Sharing happy moments with someone becomes real happiness to me more then me all by myself living the same exact happy moment. Building a life with equal partner can create bond and happiness that money can’t bye too. Some people are surgeons saving lives every day on the operating table it’s not money it’s the life they saved that day that makes their soul happy when they go to sleep at night. Some people build a beautiful car and are happy that the car they had built made so many people happy. Some people draw beautiful paintings and they become timeless wonders for future generations. Observe what makes you happy and keep on doing it.

Hai Mark. I watched a lot of videos about finding happiness. As a result, I saw those same concepts repeated over and over but the speech didn't really ring any bell. I understood the words but it didn't connect with me. You, however, have definitely rang a bell by using the right words to define finding a purpose "beyond yourself". I really like how you define that concept. Basically, it's finding something that makes you pleased to be masochist. Because in the end, from an external perspective, you're suffering for a possibility that your effort may have a tiny benefit for others. Even if it may just be you suffering for nothing other than self-satisfaction T_T

Glad that I'm subscribed to this God-level channel. In the last few months (maybe even a year), I had that strange and (somewhat) scary feeling of total emptiness and meaningless in my life, but also in everyone's life (meaning that I think everyone is living just to be alive, without any purpose in it), like it's so werid to feel that, that i cannot describe it with words, it can only be felt... But books, especially the works of Dostoyevsky, Pushkin, Tolstoy, (some different genre from the Eastern philosophy and literature) Shakespare and also the philosophy from Renè Descartes had created some sort of a (life) path, fully meaningful and also with a lot of secrets(many philosophical, many in other subjects) who are yet to be discovered, by me(becasue that "path" is a thought-creation of mine) in my brain, and they can be only discovered by experience(by feeling it, by interacting with it, and something similar)... Long story short, I want to thank you(and your work) for introducing me to that "path" which I created only by thoughts. I'm sorry if this is a long comment, but I had to express my feelings to someone/something... However, Thanks a lot !

Yes! Just riffing on resonation here : as other people have pointed out from what you're saying, 'finding' your purpose is a wack concept, it's a personal choice of doing what You find to be important. i relate this to finding your Soul Mate as well: We have many, love takes work (not destiny), and if/when your spouse dies, your love life doesn't have to be over because they were The One. the pre-determined destiny mindset is detrimental and I think it's really sad that our culture is full of its notion because many people waste a lot of time Looking when they would 'find' themselves happier and more fulfilled by Creating. Not to mention they would probably treat others better because they realize the control they have to take in it all. also, Cal Newport "So Good They Can't Ignore You" debunks the idea of following your passion; most people "find purpose" by doing something they're good at that helps others (it was built, not found).

It is necessary to create a meaning for one's existence from something, the goal is to give meaning to one's existence, because the "goal" pursues a fictional achievement that can be achieved only through some actions, and inaction will lead to complete apathy and loss of oneself

I really enjoy my job, but I don't believe in some kind of magical "purpose" either. I simply love the work I do and the vibe around it. I get a real rush from having a growth mindset, always improving my productivity, and churning out awesome work. Plus, I'm well compensated for it and don't have to work long hours to make bank. I'm all about optimizing my life, and I'm into both minimalism and quality.

The chorus of a song I wrote once says "the pursuit of purpose is a purpose". Catchy tune

To find purpose means what you are going to do with your life. In what you prefer to work at . This is what I understand of it.

Learning to proactively listen was one of those "in the short term is sucks". In fact, it took me years to become "unconsciously competent" in it but - it was worth it to improve my relationships.

so i am the exact type of person you explained at the end there - always chasing the next high, starting drama, struggling to maintain relationships. but idk what else to do. i try to help people out whenever i can, i go to the gym almost every day while also training someone there, i spend my down time studying or creating, i don't hate my job, and i became a landlord last year have the things that i do just become habits that i'm not actually sacrificing anything for at this point? i don't get why i'm still struggling with these things when i've achieved so many of the things i've set out to do

I hate the term "purpose" too, I thought I found my purpose in life 18 years ago when I decided to take my teaching degree and rebuild my life to give my wife and boys a better life. Sadly all that got shot down when I was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer so now I feel I have no purpose in life and often feel so lost, but hey shit happens doesn't it.

For me, finding purpose was super easy. I have had many things that have given me deep purpose. The challenge was not being 'chosen' to apply that purpose despite a deep need to use my purpose to make a difference. It was a source of deep emptiness many times in my life. The solution to that was to 'choose myself' or 'hire myself' when I wasn't been chosen or hired to do those things. I was able to find a way to apply that purpose by creating my own opportunities.
