How to fill Carbon Fibre pinholes. PERFECT finish every time! Prepreg and infusion often have these holes. Great for small parts
In this video I show you how I fill pin holes in prepreg carbon fibre most likely caused by a leak in the bag.
There are many different ways around filling these annoying holes, however iv found this method gives me the best end result every time. For larger parts you might be better looking into a spray option to fill the holes, but this is great for small parts.
* Products used *
Easy composites
- Xcr resin
- Mould cleaner
Upol slow degreaser
Lechler 2000 clear coat

Spray light tack coat of clear coat then a medium coat, wait for it to harden enough to show the pin holes. Spray, straight, fast, thinner (manufacturer recommended) in short burst over pin hole area. Thinner will soften the clear coat and, as it flashes off, draw out the air from the pin hole cavity creating a vacuum that in turn draws in the softened surrounding clear coat. Magic in front of your eyes! 😉

Great job! I learned something. I like to use crazy glue so I don't have to pour another batch of resin. Just sand and then finish like you normally would.

I think this is the method I’ve b even looking for. I get so many bubbles and [to put it in a lack of better explanation] resin separation. It kind of spreads out in several place throughout. A reverse bubble - if you would. I’ll try this technique next.

Good Job! The pinhole is generate because of primer coat NOT do good.Need primer coat (you use mould cleaner)to cover the pinhole first,Make the carbon part surface smooth, Then do glossy painting outside :)

‏For the first time, I bought carbon fiber fabric and epoxy resin. Can I make the spoiler of my car carbon fiber? Please, someone who knows, tell me the simple steps of the work. I have seen a video on KZfaq. Where should I do it? How many times and how many layers should I apply epoxy after gluing the carbon fiber? And my spoiler has color, do I have to remove the color completely or is it enough to sand it so that scratches are created? Thank you for your help

I have small cracks in the center of my rear rim on my 2020 BMW S1000 RR M! Can I use this to fill it because BMW says its not affecting the integrity of the rim? I'm really worried leaving it exposed because it seems like with anything else cracked that not repairing it would let moisture and debris make it worse! The entire rim is 6 spokes solid carbon fiber weave!

Poor work from BMW! I would clean the crack with acetone and dab some Xcr resin as neatly as you can into the cracks to stop any dirt getting in.

Cool, what's the best resin (1 part or 2 part epoxy), the strongest and toughest? What resin brand do the carmaker's Koenigsegg and Pagani use in their hypercars by the way? God bless.

I have personally never been able to plug the shallow pinholes other than by drowning the pieces with multiple coats of clear finish. I tried with a stiff spatula, applying pressure with gloves, but if the hole is narrower on the surface and wider internally, the air cannot get out and the resin, also due to its viscosity, will not fill it.
@TheShaddix
@TheShaddix Жыл бұрын
In that case what I would do is use a heatgun to heat the resin (which makes it thinner) and use a toothpick to poke those small holes which will force the air out of them. If they are smaller than the sharp end of a toothpick, you can use a sewing needle. Depending on how deep the hole goes, sometimes two applications are necessary (with some time apart so it cures to gel state) as the first pass will "seal" the holes and the second pass will top them off.

I'm looking for an alternative to the XCR coating since I live in the US. I tried using the same resin I used to make the parts (composite envisions thin resin) and it doesn't build up a thick enough coat and self level enough to sand smooth. Do you have any other recommendations for a coating resin that would be available in the US? I've considered ecopoxy UV poxy and some cheap amazon ones as well but haven't tried any of those yet.

I used a standard epoxy resin for skinning (same used for parts) but with 2 or 3 layers with sanding between layers and finished by spraying a 2K clear coat, the result was great!

Sand down untill holes disappear and then re clear. Always use a panel wipe degreaser first. And be sure to leave 5-10 minutes in-between spray coats as you might be describing solvent pop

That you have pinholes in the first place means that the product is filled with air pockets.. = less strenght. It means the cure cycle didnt went the way it should go. Common reasons: too less pressure on the product or heavy molds that take too long to heat up. Make sure it cures well. Applying an extra layer of unneeded resin does not make your part any stronger. But does add 10%+- of the weight. Wich is an issue. And always do wetsanding! And never exceed 240 grid. If you go any lower than 240, your sanding through your first layer wich will also make the part less strong. Also .. i can achief the same results with no extra paint/epoxy. Only thing you need to do is pollish it. The resin coat (if part cured correctly) will be just as shiny as the paint after pollishing. This safes alot of weight.😊

I would use gas torch waving over clear quickly will remove air bubbles from mould surface and bring them through and will then pop, then lay down prepreg. Never pin holes takes time to learn how to do though.
