It does not require good trees, or accurate trees, just trees enough that you can find a common surname or two to build from.

I also had swallowed the first pill and thought I had it figured out but I kept running into dead ends to prove it. BUT NOW oh my goodness, you have just given me hope that I can also figure out who my biological father is. I have contacted several people on my unknown list and no one has responded. I'm swallowing the other pill now, holding my breath and diving in. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. No other DNA youtuber has explained it in a way like you have.

I found this just a little confusing but did follow along. A very sincere Thank you for ALL your videos, they are all very helpful to people looking to find connections we may or may not have known about. I did get confused with the one up and over and down. but I get the idea. I am dealing with half-siblings so not sure exactly the cm work but easy enough to follow the chart I guess. I am just getting started, BUT I loved the way you followed the options. I am just now taking the RED pill. I reached out on Facebook to what I think is a Half-sister. waiting on test results. I will not be surprised, but a complete shock to her, if I am correct. Father is deceased with no DNA test.

Thanks for the video Larry. I’ve learned a lot from your channel. Keep them coming, please. I have recently had a similar situation that entirely wiped out a branch of my tree. In 1946, The wrong father was named and his parents adopted my dad. Thanks to DNA testing, we now know that they adopted a child that wasn’t related to them and the surname, the tree and all of the research and documents that I have been so proud of for 50 years doesn’t really belong to us at all. The floor seems to drop out from under you when you realize that you aren’t who you thought that you were. I’ll keep looking for our truth until I’ve found it.

spot on truth Lisa. That is what so many genealogist do not understand unless it happens to them. The floor drops out from under you, breathing is literally hard, until yo8u get some answers. I wish ancestry and all the DNA companies would donate just a nickel $0.05 of each test sold towards making videos specifically to help those with a DNA surprise. It seems to have an effect on a LARGE portion of testers (most blissfully blue pill unaware). you will probably find this method lacking but the next video using CMS will probably help you. Ill try to shove it out the door as fast as i can...

I have to admit, you did go through that very fast and I couldn't follow the logic. I have a unknown great grandfather that I would love to try and figure out. I also understand when you say, if you don't know one of your relatives, do you really want to know. Been there, done that. It takes a while to come to terms with what other people do. I have also cried for every child's death, accidental death, and loss of close relatives that I never got to know. I have also got to know some nice relatives that will always have a place in my heart. I hope you realize that you are who you always have been, and that your relatives, whether they are blood related or not are what you allow them to be in your heart. God bless you, and thank you for doing the video, whether I understand it or not.

I remember my red pill moment well! It was yesterday as I was watching your previous video on adding Thru Line matches to your tree (don't!!). The truth has been staring me in the face for three years, I just never stared back until now. Three years ago I lost a quarter of my tree and found a bio maternal grandfather. Here we go again, paternal grandfather this time. Mourning the loss of many favorite ggfs and ggms.... On the bright side, thanks to endogamy, quite a few will just go into different positions, which is the reason I didn't see anything amiss until now. I had them "confirming" the wrong line! Thank you, Larry.

Coming from an Australian family riddled with adoptions and mis-attributed parentage, a huge THANK YOU! I have just received my first atDNA results on ancestry, learning how to use the Leeds Method, currently reading Blaine Bettinger's book and have a wonderful distant cousin as a mentor. This video makes perfect sense to me and I didn't find your pace difficult to comprehend. If you are just receiving initial contact from enthusiastic distant cousin, you don't want to leave them hanging for the answers whilst you systematically join the dots. I love what you demonstrated in this video, it is so helpful in my situation. Also, I understand the red pill emotional response, so well. If there is one thing that I have learnt from my journey in the past years is the need to check and double check paper trails. It is why I began a new genetic public tree, so, it is like a gift for others who are finding unexpected DNA matches to my confirmed lineage. Cannot wait for your further series and explanations. This is the first video that I have watched and I will definitely watch the older four parts to catch-up on what you have previously explained to your viewers.

Thanks Larry looking forward to your future videos. My mum, her sister (who was adopted out & has a different father) and I all took tests. We all did it to try to find out who my aunt's father was and within 2 months I was able to find not only her father but that she had another 4 sisters and 2 brothers. Her dad had passed away a couple of years ago but she has met all her new siblings. However it also very quickly became apparent that my mum's dad wasn't her father either as I had his family tree going back to the early 1600's and not one single match to anyone in that tree in any way. Unfortunately all the matches to her are low cMs so I've been a bit lost and haven't been able to find a possible lead. I will try your method to see if I can find something. Hey there, very interesting video, thanks for sharing. I just want to share a few tips that maybe everyone may not know. Both of my parents, my brother, my son & myself have taken DNA tests through 23 & Me, which we have then uploaded the raw data to MyHeritage, FTDNA & GedMatch. So, having done this & seeing our matches I can definitely tell you that just because a match doesn't show up as a match to your mother doesn't mean it's not from her side. I have matches that don't match either of my parents & vice-versa. Also, you can't always go by cM. It all comes down to the amount of DNA you carry from each ancestor & we are all a totally different assortment, which is incredibly interesting when you get into the nooks & crannies of it. My brother & I don't have all of the same matches (we are full siblings). On MyHeritage I have over 10,000 matches & he has in the mid 9,000s. So, just keep that in mind. It's always best to test as many family members as you can & you will create a clearer picture. 23 & Me is helpful because they actually tell you your Paternal & Maternal Haplogroups which help to narrow down how you may be related to your matches as well. Always look at the DNA matches that you & the match you're puzzled about have in common & this will help to discern which side they're coming from if you don't have your parents tested. Hope this is of help to someone. All the Best in your DNA adventures. :)

LanniganBJ, what are you describing was where I was just prior to deducing a DNA surprise. If a match is 2nd cousin or closer they WILL match one of your two parents, if they do not....uh... well.... There is a surprise around the corner. Now at 2nd cousin 1x removed and beyond it is POSSIBLE for someone to match your parent and not you, not likely, but can happen. out of 150,000 matches i had prior to ancestry's change to 8cms i found 2 relatives closer than 4th cousin that mother matched and i did not. If it is a singular person or two, and beyond 2C1R then yes, if your describing someone closer than 2c1r, then... well... awkward moment... there is a surprise in store. if as you describe YOUR matching the person but the parent does not, well.... you are correct, each person including full siblings are indeed different as are identical twins, triplets. they may share the piece of genetic code for looks but the rest, including matches and ethnicity can/will be different. as to the CM, you can indeed go by the CM and should, but its important to realize what you said about it not being exact, but it will be within a "node' variation unless beyond the 2c1r at which case it can be radically different. The video coming out in a couple hours speaks to this i think youll like it. are the people you speak of distant matches or close matches?

well to be honest, could be any day now for a month lol I am disgusted with ancestry and genealogy at the moment. when u know to much and see what they are saying/doing its hard to do anything with their stuff right now. i keep telling myself its not for them and is to help others, but what they are saying/doing is so offensive to me that i am having a problem making myself finish it and publish anything with their site. I have not done anything substantial since i got a behind the scene look at story scout. I want to put things out but .... between storyscout and the nonsense trickign folks to participate to help fight covid *so they can profit* this company that i used for 30yrs has lost my faith. But every time i read their covid or see storyscout on their site i just get so offended i cannot continue the video. So been hand crafting it outside of their site completely. This may be a new direction, completely away from them, even if i have to develop a new method (kinda like leeds did). hopefully August

I'm looking for my mother's biological father. She never knew who he was. She's 80 years old. Her matches are mostly 2nd and 3rd cousins. She's done a 23andme and ancestry and I've uploaded her dna to gedmatch and familytreedna. I did several clusters with genetic affairs. I've narrowed down her grandfather's line and now working on her grandmothers line. There's a lot of endogemy so the clusters are more like clutter. Working with lower matches has been difficult.

I've identified a family, but the parents were 1C1R, so- pedigree collapse- not easy to choose among 8 sons at that distance . (But do I know their ancestors! ) Her maternal grandfather either had an invented name, or sprung full blown from the head of Zeus- utterly untraceable - unless he's also part of That Family...... interesting idea :) my research on endogamy showed things still worked. If the mother absorbed fetal dna, (fathers) the triangulation would still work just as with endogamy, but there would be "some degree" of overlapping "appearance of endogamy" when not really present. But the cms and triangulation would still be spot on, just would screw up clustering to some degree based on cells the mother absorbed and how much it mutated to her dna. I would love to find someone this happened to to see their family dna results to know :)

Hi Larry, thank you so much for your video. It was a little difficult to follow since it went so fast, but I believe I got the gist of it. I am an NPE and I did find out who my biological father was but the problem I am running in to now is that I have 8 2nd and 3rd cousin DNA matches (105-286cM) that I cannot find the connection to me. I have heard from a couple I emailed and they have no clue. I know they are on my mother's parental side of the family because they match my half brother. I have looked at all the trees available and cannot find a single surname that I recognize. I am truly at a loss as to how to proceed at this point. I have never put all the trees (what few there are) up in separate tabs and I may try that, I may have to go with smaller cM numbers since so few of the 8 have trees. I will give it a shot and again, thank you for your time in putting this video together.

Suggestion for future videos, Larry. I see you removed all your clusters when you did this video. It would be helpful if you starred the matches you intend on using, since your match list has many more when you initially did your DNA test. That way, not only will it help guide you to the matches you want to use for your video, but the viewers would also go to the starred matches visually with you.

ah endogamy, it is a nightmare for trees, HOWEVER, for triangulation it is not actually that bad. They will show up in triangulation through the most recent common ancestor to you. Since one is a straight line ancestor and the other a cousin, the CMS will show that. What then becomes confusing is linking that same branch elsewhere. Since it will ONLY show the CMS to the MRCA, you MUST document this secondary branch because later you will not see it triangulating as expected but if you note that from this node back it will fall under the node on "this other surname lineage" it will be easily identifiable.

When people put together their trees, it can contain not just errors, but emotional connections that supersede (for them) their biological connections. My biological father I refer to as my "father" and my beloved step-father I refer to as my "Dad." In my tree, I have both of my mother's marriages shown, but I edited my profile such I have a relationship to both men, but I identified my step father is my "preferred" father. If you look at my tree without examining my profile, It appears as though I am the biological son of my step-father. (I also had a legal name change, so in my tree my step-father's surname is the same as mine, and my children all have my step-father's surname.) So unless there is DNA evidence to prove otherwise, you can never be 100% certain if someone else's tree is showing what they emotionally want to show versus what is biologically accurate. I started my genealogical research when I was 23 years old in 1983. I asked my paternal grandmother to list her siblings for me. When I found the ship manifest for their family's immigration, I found the name of a sister my grandmother didn't mention. When I asked her about the missing sister, my grandmother said, "I didn't like her." So she had intentionally omitted her sisters name.

spot on! great post. yeah when i found out i had a sister i never knew, my aunt told me she had no children. Later she called and said she did but if i ever contacted her to never talk to her again. My response was "so if i contact the ONLY person on this planet that can help me identify my father, never talk to you again?" she said yes. I responded, "well thats not selfish at all LOL" I did, she took a test and turned out she is my niece via my sister i never knew *dead* and my bio father. without her test i would never have known. I have had alot of parts omitted from me because "didnt like" them.
@lgkfamily
@lgkfamily 4 жыл бұрын
@@DNAFamilyTrees Sounds like there was a lot of pain and fear in your aunt's response. My biological father was a large, intimidating man with genuine mental issues. He left us all with ugly memories. After the divorce, my mother, sister and I fearfully avoided all contact with him until the day he died. I grew up to be a tall, strong man myself, so my fear of him eventually faded. But not for my mother and sister. They felt vulnerable until he died. When I first began my genealogy, I had a choice to make: whether or not to pursue my biological father's ancestry. I decided to do so, and never regretted it. For me, to refuse to do so would be the equivalent of my holding hundreds of people accountable for the actions of one individual who, for them, hadn't even been born yet. Turns out his ancestry went back into colonial Maine, with some heroic stories of note along the way.

I finally got a first cousin match who I believe is an uncle. The family has communicated some but getting info is like pulling teeth. I cannot find good information for his mother. I found one census record, her marriage record. And her death record and nothing else. The one census record says she's a stepdaughter of the man. But the elder children belong to the mother and the father so I don't think she's their child. What do you suggest? One branch of my family are Bacys. They're in texas.

Well ironically I know that surname as it’s a ) Basey / Basye derivative) I strongly recommend exact match searches to start That’s a rare spelling I would also recommend book if basye 1950 by Otto Basey I have link to online version at Basey.com ( and other Basey family info) Your line of Bacy will very ((VERY) likely tie into a line in that book eat some point Look for ending locations in your tree and check book I had a last name spelling change in my Basey line that the book was able to verify Good luck!🍀

Thanks! I will order the book if it's available. I had to order a couple of books when I was working on a different line. Their nanes are Caya/Cayer/Cyr and they were a PITA. I know that I have all of the variations of Bacy in my tree. They're not who I'm looking for, I mentioned it because I've never seen anyone else with that name. My maternal grandmother's eldest sister married a Bacy. He was born into slavery so if the book includes mulatto children it will he extremely helpful. If not it will still be interesting to read. I'm actually looking for someone whose last name was supposedly Roberson. Robertson/Robinson are for sure variations. I have found her marriage certificate, a death record, and a 1940 census that lists her. The problem is that she is listed as the mothers daughter but as the father's stepdaughter. Her last name is different from the parents. There are two older boys listed that have the same last name as the parents and they are said to be the children of both parents. I cannot find any record of her mother or any relatives having the same last name and I'm stumped. I even have a professional helping me and she can't find anything either. My biological father had to be either her half sibling or son. She had five children who have different fathers but all have the last name of Hopkins. The son that I believe is my father is deceased. But I know that he had one child. But no one in the family is willing to give me his name. Which I think is ridiculous. I'm 43 years old and I already have a family. I don't want to know these people lol.

I have a serious problem I can't figure out and your videos have helped a lot but don't know where else to turn with this on. I had my step daughters DNA tested, she's trying to find her father (unknown). I have found a link in the family that is NOT on her mothers side. She has a woman that shows up as 744CM's, we assume that it's a great aunt. Her daughter of course shows up as well but at 253CM's. Her daughter has a half brother that shows up at 336CM's. Ok so heres the problem I can't figure out. There is a woman that shows up in the 3rd cousin area (ancestry) at 106CM's , this woman does not show up in the 744CM woman's shared match but (does) in the 253CM and but does (not) show in the half brother 336CM? The reason I am having an issue figuring out this problem is how is my daughter in a (shared) tree with two different stings? I don't know if I am saying this right? If my daughter is a relative with the 744CM and all subsequent down line family then how does my daughter also have a common relation to the 253CM that doesn't go up the chain? Does this question make it better? While I know that logical answer might be that the 106CM is to far removed from the 744CM but there is yet another problem, remember that I stated the half brother to the 253CM doesn't share this line either. Now to confuse matters even more there is a woman (contacted) that shows as 2nd cousin at 218CM. She states that her father is 744CM's 1st cousin so in my mind I have ruled out the idea that the father of the 253CM is the answer but then how does my daughter share DNA with the up Iine of 744CM? I am so confused, PLEASE, PLEASE help? ANYONE with a knowledge of DNA results please chime in as well. You won't hurt my feelings at all if this gets crazy, be honest. By the way I made this discovery by utilizing your "how to cluster" otherwise I would have never made this discovery. Thank you all in advance!

I have a question about my mom's DNA results with her sister I just did her sister's DNA, & this is what it say's for Ancestry.com : JA/PL You and your sister's Shared DNA: 1,925 cM across 48 segments Longest segment: 151 cM, now on FTDNA it say's this: Half Sister, Grandmother/ Granddaughter, Aunt, Niece 1,890 Shared cM, 150 Longest block X-Match, is this accurate? because everything I am seeing say's that even at a 1925 Cm's match they should be half sisters not full sisters.
@DNAFamilyTrees
@DNAFamilyTrees 3 жыл бұрын
dnapainter.com/tools/sharedcmv4 is were i suggest you take a look. 1925 shows as either sibling or half sibling kinship. it is higher than normal for a half, lower than normal for a full. So it is an abnormal CMS for sure and i can see how it would be confusing. that said, without any other information than the CMS id be inclined towards a half sibling kinship. if the tree however showed full i would feel that is the correct answer. The final determination would be from clustering their matches. if they both match people on both sides, then it would confirm full kinships. but if there are no paternal matches, then id really investigate further. with clustering this should be an easy and pretty quick determination (best video on clustering ancestry DNA results in in this channel from last may. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i6iYbLtl1s-biKs.html

Well my mother was married to Dwight Basey at time of my birth, i have a birth certificate saying he was my birth father, adoption records showing he was my birth father. I have family video of him bringing me home from hospital when i was two days old (you can see it in first video in channel). I have video of him and mom at christmas and her birthday, first after i was born). Everyone in family said he was my father, i had no reason to suspect i was NOT a basey. What i found/figured out was mother got pregnant from a one night stand affair (dwight was boyfriend at the time) and told dwight he was the father so as not to be embarrased. He did blood typing for vietnam draft, AB negative. Im type O. Basic science immediately told him i could NOT be his son after all. They divorced and mother married Jones who adopted me (thus larry jones) But i took a dna test and at age 56, found out everythin i know on father side was erroneous! And after triangulation, found mother had same thing to her line so 75% of my 30 years of research, poof! gone. Not my family. Since Basey was never around, and adopted jones, its basically a ..... well insert own word there lol

Start at 3rd cousins. The recent video "step by step" I did the steps lined out from scratch (she had nothing) to find her bio father. If you have 3rd or fourth cousins, your segmenting lines at that level specifically instead of at the grandparent level so it works the same and with BETTER results. I just dont start there as i am typically looking closer for a Parent so i try to get the grandparent lines quicker. But starting 3rd or 4th cousin works fine. Check out the step by step and in the description are the "KEY" videos to watch to understand it and how to do it.

Why didn't you just ask your mom?
@DNAFamilyTrees
@DNAFamilyTrees 3 жыл бұрын
I did, she lied. She told a boy he was the father and when he found out (blood typed for vietnam, he was AB neg, im type O) he left her. I was named after his two brothers and when he found that he and brothers had azospermia genetic disease of all males under a mother, meaning none of them would ever have children so he went along with the lie but gave me up without hesitation to adoption (to jones). (no sisters) When DNA proved i was not Basey nor Jones, mother insisted the Science was wrong. Later it was "I prayed about what i did, i was forgiven, its in the past, it doesn't matter" to which i responded "kinda does mom, we are talking about who is my biological father, their medical past, etc., so yeah kinda does matter". But i had to do this on my own, without any help. Find my father out of the 7 billion people alive today (1/2 men) and the 7billion who died since they date of my conception (1/2 men) so literally had to figure out who of 7million potential men were my father. So i created this channel to HELP people in similar situations because its OVERWHELMING and lonely and even those close that should help, often would rather live in the lie than help.
