How to find incorrect supply polarity with an approved voltage indicator. The first live test in BS 7671 is recheck supply polarity it is so important and in this video Marcus demonstrates how to prove supply polarity of a single phase 230 volt AC supply in a domestic dwelling. Using a proving unit and a voltage indicator we show step by step how to carry out proving polarity of the supply test.

Yes thanks the video had been some help. Important point doing line and earth first instead of the safe isolation protocol of line neutral when dealing with polarity

I have had problems with electrician with this subject before doing commercial installations. There answer back to me is there in no problem with live and neutral being mixed up everything will work fine, It just reversed. Good video

Boss, if the polarity was wrong from the suppliers side, how could they bond the neutral (actually live) and earth together at the main incoming side, assuming you are following TNCS system?

Great video, guy’s clear and precise explanation. 👍👍👍👍❤️ One question though, if you did all the required dead test in the correct order then the supply polarity test would show this fault at the CU as we test between line and neutral and line and earth and neutral and earth.

It's amportaing to check a polarity of line and neutral in all installation in house becuse that what make light bulb have weak glow even the switch off .

If this was a TN-C-S this would mean all exposed metalwork would be live too (through bonding). Presumably when you check polarity upstream you are only doing so where the connections aren't sealed by DNO ?

Good videos, and respect for the effort you put in to delivering them. Do your students get much on control circuits and motor starters etc? Lots of it seems aimed at domestic, what if students end up working in more industrial settings where this sort of stuff is vital to have knowledge of. :)

Is it necessary to prove your unit? I was led to believe it wasn't important when live testing, as you're always going to have a supply to energise your tester, if it's battery is flat.

As the two wires, live and neutral had reversed polarity i assumed that some where along the circuit the wires had met an appliance or an object and weren’t wired properly ? Is this correct ? If so where along the circuit where the wires not fitted correctly?

If found to be the DNOs fault can you leave the power turned on till the reverse polarity is fixed.

Gaz, do you have schematics for your fixed testing boards (1, 2, 3 etc)? I'd love to make something like it for our college workshop as currently we don't have anything fixed and dedicated for the purpose. Failing a schematic, a photo with sections indicated (ring, radial, lighting etc. It looks beautiful

Fault finding video's 😍 If I've understood this correctly, you have reversed polarity, so the neutral is now the line and doesn't have protection from a rcd etc. So if you have a faulty appliance with a dead short circuit between line and neutral and have reversed polarity to the consumer unit, none of the safety protection circuit's would work. And the faulty appliance would just draw more current until the wires melt etc or something goes bang?
@JasperJanssen

RCDs still work, they look for imbalance between the two conductors and don’t really make a difference which is which. Technically, and practically, it is often possible to wire RCDs up in either LN or NL fashion depending on whether you need the live to come out the left side or the right. (Check your manufacturer’s instructions for whether they are tested that way, obvs, don’t take the word of a rando non-spark on the jnternet). It’s the overcurrent “fuses” that no longer work - so both the “slightly higher current than specified” and “dead short circuit” functions of MCBs do not trigger, unless the current goes back through the live conductor. So for fully rcd+MCB (or RCBO) protected circuits, those should still trigger on any of the 3 types of faults (albeit in a back-ass-wards way), but for MCB only circuits that are not RCD protected this would give you a situation where you could short out kilo-amps from “neutral” (actually line) to earth and not trigger any protection. Even the DNO main fuse won’t trigger, because that’s in the “line” conductor as well and that’s not part of this circuit! So the only protective device remaining is most likely going to be the transformer substation fusing, given that that will probably be before where the switch was made. So what is that, several kilo-amps? That’s a hell of a fire starter, twisted firestarter… I suppose that’s one reason RCDs are neat.

As alternative current changes the direction so it not gonna be a problem once neutral and live and earth have been reverse because everything will work normally without any short circuit
