Great discussion. Yes, people mostly have good instincts for what styles suit them. However, often they get the fit wrong. Please consider a podcast (or series!) on how to choose the right fit. What does that mean for where clothes are snug or loose? What does that mean for length, depending on the intention for look?

Hi ladies, this episode is by far my favorite. Honestly I don't like that many KZfaq channels now offer videos on this topic, but rarely touch the fact that wardrobe staples mean different things to every single person. When thinking about mine I think it rather depends on the season. Spring, Autumn, Winter - jeans, jumper comfy but practical shoe, Summer - skirts, dresses without a fail every single year. PS: Who else remembers Signe's capsule wardrobe when she started KZfaq✌️Great evolution to watch I think

I am a 72 year old who follows all three of you & I just had to comment. I am a soft summer like Signe & I alway want to wear more blazers but came to the realization that they have to be made of a heavy knit or be more of a sophisticated sweater to fit the bill for me. Great video ladies!!!!

I’m also a SSu and would love to wear blazers.. but it’s hard to fine without polyester which is something I try to avoid. Plus many are dry clean only😢

Interesting episode. Self trust is the best. Permission to just adapt and mix things up is crucial. We can get stuck in ruts and it's ok to make mistakes. Thank you 😊xxx

I'm a blazer woman for sure. If its too hot, which in Sydney it often is, I wear oversized shirts. And I wear these with sparkly pants, which is an actual staple in my wardrobe. I have 3 pairs. At the moment I'm trying to get out of a shoe rut because I've only been wearing comfortable shoes ( not even nice Flats). Love the podcast, especially since I don't have friends that like to discuss clothes at this level of detail!

A few people have mentioned seasonal staples and I totally agree, that if you live in a climate with 4 seasons, you will generally have varying without fails. Thus, the 3 words system helps a lot in this case. If you are minimal and classic, this will carry over all seasons thus your staples may even be items that are all the same colour (like some people really do only wear black). So your staple might actually be black trousers and a black t-shirt that carries across seasons. Or a black boots and woollen sweater in Winter, black shorts and a black tank top in summer.

My staples differ from season to season, but generally in the cold season they are jeans, sweater/cardigan, sneakers; and in the warm season they change into linen pants, tank top and sandals ☺️ I also love to have some options with handbags, and I like them to be from small local brands ❤️ Thank you for a very interesting episode ❤

I really liked what you said about finding your own "without fail wardrobe essential"--e.g. a denim jacket vs. a blazer--but I had to laugh when Christina said that a trench coat was a basic--not if you live in Southern California! You three live in climates that have four seasons and require a lot of outerwear; for me the challenge is to find a sweater or jacket for the morning and evening and/or layers for the rest of the day as it warms up. I love California's climate, but sometimes it's hard to find that versatile piece that makes an outfit look its best. Thanks for a good episode.

Have you considered adding a cardigan? I think a cardigan can be light weight enough to layer on when it's cooler and remove as the day warms up.

I live in Northern Cal. But you are so right about the trench coat! Also, I live in the "Burbs" So I am constantly in and out of my car. I do have a very light/ flimsy cotton trench from the gap that I wear as a light topper, or if I have to run to the post office or store quickly and want to look a little more presentable. For when it is cold and wet, I reach for a Barbour style jacket.

I think I start with proportions which drive the key pieces. Then I look at mood and level of polish for the style, fabric, and colour. Example: Knit, denim, flats. Ivory cable knit, dark boot cut, black moto boot. Periwinkle cashmere, white skinny jean, metallic ballet flat. Very different mood and vibe, but essentially same core pieces.

Mine is changing. My entire life has been graphic t + jeans + some form of comfortable shoe. I tried making myself change to like button up shirts and pants in my 30s to elevate but I just couldn’t do it. Now I’m 41 and I recently realized I just don’t like jeans anymore, and I’ve ordered some merino wool nice looking tshirts to try out. I’m loving corduroy pants and we will see how this goes. I think I’m just wanting more texture and polish in my life.

Like Signe, I consider blazers to be on the dressy side and not something I wear on a day-to-day basis, even though I LOVE them. I want to wear them when I go out somewhere but here, it's usually too hot for most of the year. Like Christina, button-up shirts are something I love to buy but hate to wear and I figured out why I hate to wear them - because I hate having to iron them! 😫 I'm going to strive to do better and wear them over tanks and tees, in place of a blazer. Alyssa and Signe, I absolutely LOVE your hair worn up like that - it accentuates your beautiful features and bone structure! Loved this podcast and can't wait for the next one! ❤

Great vid and great topic! I think I finally understand where my purchasing decisions still go wrong sometimes. If I need a tanktop or camisole, I’d always buy the most basic version of it, but since I like jeans, feminine tops of any kind and a good shoe, I realised that a more detailed feminine version of a tank/cami would add so much more to my wardrobe. Basic items do mean different things to different people. It’s all about customising it to your own personal preferences ❤ Thank you for helping me remind that!

I buy tennis shoes but seldom wear them. I like the idea of them, but I feel frumpy so many times when I wear them. It’s good to know it can take a few years to figure out personal style and accommodate it when the inevitable evolution happens.

I was just cleaning up my Amazon shopping cart and it occurred to me that not only do I like to mix loose and fitted pieces in an outfit, I like to mix masculine and femine styles within a fit. So, if I'm wearing a masculine sweat I like a fitted feminine top. If I'm wearing a loose masculine long sleeve t or hoodie, I prefer a feminine and fitted bottom. So, contrast. I like a contrast of femine and masculine, loose and fitted, pr contrasting colors in an outfit. Often my outfits are quite relaxed but I do like to go all out with an eye look. I like an eye grabbing eye look.

I always finding myself nodding along as I listen! I'm in my trial-and-error *play* era - absolutely starting from scratch. Practice makes perfect, so each "failure" is just a valuable stepping stone along the path towards my personal style. You win or you learn! (and either way, that's a win)

Oh, three is hard. Ok, I try: colorful / interesting and loose skirts (longer in winter, shorter in summer, may be a loose cotton trousers, too), leggins and slim fitted black / dark shirts. Classical A-line outfits. If Leggins don’t count (wear them underneath) I would add my black sneakers. I actually wear these essentials like an uniform almost every day. Best about it: I always have a full outfit. I can chose more every day pieces or more fancy ones. Also I like colorful dresses, they would be the fourth essential. Jeans are an exception in these days but I like having one or two of them for traveling, the playground or a walk through a forest (not trekking because I have special outdoor trousers for that). It’s easy to decide what I want to buy if I need to replace a piece because of this defined style. And still there’s enough variation not to be bored. I don’t think that everybody „needs“ certain thinks. If you go for shirt, shoes and trousers, OK. Although I know a few women who only wear dresses… But even a button-up or a blazer certainly are not essentials for everyone. I actually think that most occasions for a blouse ore costumes are also good for dresses. The only essentials I really believe in are for practical reason: in winter you NEED a warm coat or jacket, for example.

I’d love to hear you guys discuss personal harmony at some point. It coincides with this but would help a lot of people who aren’t as inherently good at styling like y’all. I had a personal harmony analysis by Elyssa Aesthetic on YT. It was by far the most insightful thing I’ve ever had done. I was like 60% there with understanding my wardrobe because I’m not inherently good at just ‘knowing what works.’ She didn’t just say what would look good on my body but what essence I project, the repeating shapes of my body and face, the intensity of my gaze, and so much more. It was so spot on for me to finish off that wardrobe conclusion. It let me understand how integral personality and how you carry yourself have an effect on what clothes look like on your body. It’s like how chunky shoes just didn’t work for Christina, or how certain styles don’t fit someone no matter how polished or well dressed they are; sometimes your whole essence just doesn’t want to carry specific styles. It’s also the least limiting personal style parameter I’ve seen. It’s like hiring a stylist but far better, or it’s like if you expanded on the three words. It solves most if not all of the questions about personal fit as well as material etc. also goes hand in hand with color analysis. I think you guys would naaaaail a video on that.

I think my basics/staples are jeans (straight leg only) or slim pants plus a versatile top (sweaters in fall/winter), tees, tanks, and button-ups for spring/summer. To add polish, I use a belt, jewelry, and shoes, but I’ve realized that I LOVE jackets - blazers, denim or leather jacket, and even evening jackets to “dress up” my basics. Alyssa, your cropped, blue shiny jacket has actually been an inspiration in that department.

Ohh I tried a lot of different t-shirts and I just hate them 🙈 Now I stick to no sleeve or long sleeve bodysuit or tank top. When I don't want to layer I wear some kind of blouses, usually embroidery cotton or something flowy or textured.

Fun episode, my staples are: Black acai skinny walking trousers which I wear for everything (closely followed by jeans). White trainers/sneakers and my brown hobo handbag. If I had to swap the handbag for a top it would be a blazer (either camel or cream thee both used as much).

Thank you for this. I'm currently navigating how to shop mindfully. I've proud that I've made a lot of progress in a few years on cutting down on shopping stop bulk online shopping and hauls. And I do have a good vision for my personal style but I'm struggling on how to plan buys and budget without stressing about them. It helps for me to see the reason I'm holding on other purchases is for this valuable purchase. I find myself stressing and contemplating each buy. How do you plan for purchases without stressing over them? Also I realized I've been feeling a lifestyle creep, not buying designer pieces but buying expensive local and sustainable which makes it difficult for me in my budget to fill in wardrobe gaps within a reasonable time frame.

I nailed all 3 of yours! So good😁Mine are, Denim and ribbed tank as my constants-BUT depending on season the third changes. In spring and summer, a light layer like a leather jacket or cardigan but most days I’m reaching for a hoodie. I have separate hoodies for around the house vs out in the world which can be dressed up if needed by adding the leather jacket or blazer over the hoodie. Casual but put together 🤷🏻‍♀️

Love your podcast as always! My wardrobe essentials are statement earrings, a bootcut jean or flare pant, and a knit top (often a dressy tee). I love your discussion on how to customize a list of essentials, because I adore buttonups on others, but as a busty woman, it is so hard to get one that fits me properly! I need to look for “my” version of the button up, thanks for the inspiration!

My feel-safe&awesome-staple has always been a good dress, ever since early childhood. But I‘m on a style journey since 2021, when I survived canver for the first time. I‘ve had pulmonary embolism as a chemo-sideeffect and as a consequence I have to wear surgical stockings 24/7. So it‘s been three years of wearing them, and I‘ve found that dresses aren‘t my feel-safe-staples anymore. I can‘t wear them all year round anymore, like I used to do, because the stockings are always in the way anyhow or in sight, unless I wear a maxi dress in summer. However, where I live, there are not many really hot, sunny days and specifically a maxi-dress is not a dress, I feel awesome in. My second feel-good-staple is a pair of jeans. I‘m a denimhead, but if I‘m totally honest, I rather wear leggins because right now they are the most comfortable piece of clothing to me. It‘s trial and error, but it‘s tough.

Hi all! I love this podcast and listen to it religiously. I have some hopefully constructive feedback. Lately, I think it feels as though Christina has a disproportionate amount of airtime, and often turns the conversation back to her own style. As much as I appreciate Christina’s viewpoint, I think it’d be great to hear more from Signe and Alyssa too! I don’t mean to suggest Christina is doing this deliberately or anything. Just something I’ve noticed!

Maybe it’s because I’ve been watching them back to back lately, but these topics and the content is starting to feel pretty repetitive. I love you three and I will listen to them all! But something beyond three words and uniforms would be super welcome. Like getting dressed for a party or a wedding (maybe how to do your own wedding styling sustainably) or workwear that is still you and still creative or things you love to wear that your partner or people you’ve dated don’t like or dressing for a first date or a tenth date! Just some thoughts
