How to Fish Jigs for Tough Summer Bass | Gerald Swindle Tells All

Stingy summertime bass got you wishing you “weren’t” fishing? While most anglers think slowing down is best during a tough bite, Gerald Swindle (wired2.fish/SwindleKZfaqCha...) puts on display that the exact opposite can sometimes be even more effective. Sit back and watch as “GMAN” explains why snapping a skirted bass jig in deep grass can oftentimes be the ticket to beating the heat.

The “middle of the road”, as Swindle calls it, is a place that often gets overlooked come summertime. “Most anglers either go punch mats or get out on the ledges.” What several people forget is that there is a whole lot of water between the two for fish to sit in. Swindle begins breaking down this area by using his side imaging to look for irregularities in the grassline and of course, fish.
Once successfully located, Swindle ops for a skirted bass jig which he casts into the grass, and snaps back to the boat. Erratically snapping the jig creates a reaction strike out of the fish. Swindle chooses a more streamlined head design to come through the grass better, as well as a shorter-shanked hook for better penetration. Swindle’s ideal setup for this technique is a 7’3” medium-heavy rod paired with a faster gear ratio reel (7.5:1) to catch up to fish if you get caught out of position, which Swindle claims happens more times often than not.

I watched another Gerald video and my father took me bass fishing when i was a baby. and i've been doing it ever since. I fished for bass now for over 40 years and never liked or had confidence in a jig. I looked at them as ways to get hung up baits. After watching Gerald descibe a jig last winter I busted out all the jigs I had laying around and began fishing it at least once a trip. At first I sucked.. couldn't get a bite. Then one day in the following summer it happened. It just clicked. I was fishing it wrong. That day I caught a two lber on my second pitch with a jig. then five casts later a three lber. I have gone jig niuts now and will always have pone tied onm. I love Gerald. He's a great guy or one hell of a actor. Either way I can't thjank him enogh.

Hey Big G! Love your videos brother wherever I can find them. I’m like a sponge trying to learn whatever and whenever I can when not on the water. I only get on the water once a week but that’s rain or shine so you fill in the gaps for me in between. Hands down one of the best teacher there ever was or is. Watching and listening to you I can tune everything else out. Ok I’ll stop before you think I’m gonna ask you out on a date. This is and older video so don’t know if you’ll see this but have a question. What reel handle grips do you use? Can’t find any that fits me exactly. I can’t afford all the same brand reels so I have about 15 different brands and want them all to feel more the same. If you took the time to read this freakin book I wrote ya maybe you will let me know some to try. Appreciate you buddy and all of team Swindle!

Hi Jake, we're not 100% sure but know that Swindle has always been a huge proponent of casting/pitching/flipping with both hands due to the enhance efficiency. Most definitely helps with detecting quick bites on the fall by eliminating the hand switch.
