Fiting corsets, stays and bodies is the hardest part of the process--and even more difficult when you're trying to fit a bodice from the most under-represented, under-appreciated, "Black Hole" of historical costuming- the 17th century!
But fear not, my friends, in this video, I'll walk you step by step through the process of fitting a 1660's bodice, from talking about what we're actually looking for in an ideal fit, to showing how to apply our knowledge on something round and squishy (aka, muh body.) When all is said and done, fitting 1660's bodies is no different from fitting stays, or from fitting corsets--it's just that the silhouette is different!
This is the second and most detailed part of my mockup process for my 1660's gown. My wearable mockup video, and the first portion of the process, can be found here: • Making a Selkie-Inspir...

Thanks for showing your frustration. Often women don't dare to show frustration and laugh it off or say, they are stupid. When you're creative and making things it's normal that things don't always go perfect and it's normal to get frustrated. It really helps to see examples of gifted people who show that creativity is not only Inspiration, but that sometimes frustration is part of the process! Thanks for that!

I made it to the second mock-up stage of the pink, front lacing stays/bodies you showed when introing the books. I may re-launch them this year because they’re for a historical cosplay. We have similar, voluptuous proportions, so these videos are priceless for curvy gals trying to pull off “straight” silhouettes. Thank you for sharing your process so clearly!

The mid-17th century is one of my favourite periods of dress, and I'm working on a late 1640s-early 1650s ensemble with a similar cut. This video was so helpful! It's lovely to know there's people that are also passionate about the 1600s. Now, if only there were events...

Congratulations on making your ko-fi goal for the Dark Unicorn! Really great video on the complexity of fitting the 1660 bodie: I learn so much from all of your 17th century videos, I just wish more people were interested in sewing clothing from this period. Maybe we should get together and form our own group...lol! 🧡💙

I have made Victorian corsets, and worn 17th century stays (Yay! Working at Ren Faires when I was in high school!). If fitted properly, both are very comfortable. Both have fitting issues that you have to learn how to do. It becomes more difficult when you live alone and don't have extra hands and eyes to help. At least now there are a lot of pattern choices. 15 years ago finding a base pattern you could actually understand was a difficult task.

I'm about to do some late 18th century (sorry 😝) stays and this is really neat. Also I LOVE a wearable mockup. I'm currently wearing my wearable walking skirt mockup. The waistband is actually too small, but I still wear it ALL THE TIME! Edit: I also got my dad (a carpenter) to help me with making a busk for my Regency stays. I think that we used oak.

That's one of the things I hate about corsetry. The wearing of the mockup amd having bones poking you in weird places!!! Love the petticoat colour. A great tip about the side bust support! Typical that the rain would stop once you'd finished😂. Hope you're not getting too drenched. Bloody hell, that's the last thing you need waking you up at stupid o'clock! I hope he got his leak fixed, cos you don't need that happening again.

@@FantasticalFolliesCostuming I keep hoping that'll be all I need, but so far what felt comfortable for 4 hours was pinchy after 20 minutes the next time... and I can't stand having well fitting running shoes or properly fitted bras on longer than strictly required, and pants tight enough not to fall off over my lack of hips aren't comfortable if I have to sit. Blargh... I should just be a nudist.

This is true of pointe shoes as well. The first pair you put on, you have no idea what a good fit is. It's only after you wear a few pairs that you get to know what works & what doesn't. Since we don't wear bodies, stays, or corsets as a matter of course in modern life, we don't know what it's really supposed to feel like. It's not even a discomfort thing but of course they don't feel like clothes you're used to. Good luck!😊

Bodies and stays a must for the Golden Age of Piracy though for a tavern wench jumps seem to be more "practical."
