You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed! I'm not sure who suggested that, but I heard it somewhere while I was going down the research rabbithole. If you try it, make sure you use flexible cardboard like on cereal boxes and not like the corrugated kind. That just folds and is useless.

Ahh, stays. I stayed away from 18th century for years and years, because one should start with stays... Don't ask me why, but they did seemed so complicated (even though I am a learned and fairly well practiced dressmaker)... Until a friend asked me, why I am such a chicken, if I can do victorian corsets (with busks and all), stays shouldn't scare me so... and of course, when I actually did them... they were much simpler than I thought.

Hello! I already did 1780s stays by redthreaded, now planning to do fully boned stays. Very exited. Funny thing, I only feel uncomfortable in stays on the third hour of wearing, no matter, how broken in they are. Before and after that I barely remember that I'm corseted

Cool! I'm loving my fully boned stays...I've bought redthreaded's Regency long stays pattern, looking forward to making them. I've heard such great things about their patterns. And that's so strange! Perhaps you had something traumatizing happen three hours into dressing in a past life...? 🤔🤣

I’m definitely sending you a message on IG. Thank you for doing this video. It’s been hard to figure out “how” the stays for this period are supposed to fit to know where they don’t.

Great format of mock ups in more detail. They can be the Devils curse and as resulted in many being binned through sheer expiration.

for all those too lazy to make a mock up like me, my best advice is: 1) always error on the side of making them smaller than you think 2) have at least 1/2” seam allowance then trim it off

@@FantasticalFolliesCostuming i don’t believe in mock ups for corsets or stays tbh. as long as they’re smaller than me i’m good! (also i don’t trust myself to maintain the right silhouette when making alterations lol)

@@yerbamatte5 Hah! A legit concern...I definitely worried about that with these stays...but because of my short torso I had to dive in and do it, and they're so much more comfortable than the purple ones because of it.

I might be your Scottish body twin, so now I’m watching to get more tips. Glad to hear that the AD outlander undies pattern is short bodied - I reckon it might be possible to get a good fit on them and then use them as a base for other 18th century designed corsets kind of like a block

This is such a helpful video! Every time I get stuck in the mockup process I rewatch it and find another piece of useful advice I missed the first dozen times XD One question I can't seem to find addressed anywhere: everyone says the tabs should break at your natural waist, but in a lot of patterns the back pieces have curved seams that create a narrowest point above where the tabs break - why is this? are the tabs supposed to fit differently in the back vs the front?
@FantasticalFolliesCostuming
@FantasticalFolliesCostuming Жыл бұрын
Wow, thank you! Honestly, that is the biggest compliment, thank you so much for your kind words!!! I've learned since making this video that the tabs actually break about an inch below the waist. So I'm guessing that's what you're seeing. My theory is that they do that to help smooth the line, and that gives a little more grip and support to the skirts, but that's just a theory. I will add, even though the tabs on my mullet stays break at the waist, they're still the most comfortable set of stays I own, and from my totally biased opinion, there's not much of a difference 🤷‍♀️

This is really interesting. I made this pattern as my first pair of stays. I do not experience discomfort at the waist, but I do feel like the tabs kick out A LOT. I also have like ...mom stomach, big hips and big butt in relation to my waist size. Do you think discomfort or creasing is a stronger indicator of improper fit? I feel like my stays could be better but I've been unsure if it was the pattern or the fit. This video has been really good food for thought. Thank you.
@FantasticalFolliesCostuming
@FantasticalFolliesCostuming Жыл бұрын
That just goes to show how different people's bodies can be! That pattern would have been fine if I'd known to shorten it at the waist, but unfortunately I was too inexperienced at the time to know to do that. Now I know I basically have to shorten EVERYTHING. That being said, it's a Big 4 pattern, and there are definitely better patterns with more historical attention to detail out there if you're wanting to try a different one. As far as your question is concerned...if it's a new make and you haven't broken it in, discomfort could and probably is related to that. The fabric and boning will stretch and mold to your body, which is why I always make mine a scant bit smaller than I want it to end up being, especially when using linen and wool, which both stretch a lot. Then I wear them on and off--a few hours at a time at first, and then like, one full weekend day--to break them in before I make any decisions. Bad wrinkling is definitely an indication of something that needs to be adjusted. If it's twisting, then that's just a grain issue. I think (key word, there) that if the tabs are kicking out excessively, you need to cut them up a little. You can remove the binding, snip up, and see if that helps. You can always whip the cut bit down later, if it turns out not to work. If these are your first pair of stays, then they will be flawed (everyone's are), and eventually, you'll want to make a new pair. So if they're uncomfortable, think of it as the perfect opportunity to fiddle around with them and see what works, so you can get a better fit next time 😄

I have one pressing question, I am planning on making an 18th century gown for my Halloween costume, so historical accuracy is not a priority this time. My question is, are those tabs very important for function like holding up the skirt as you say? Or can I use a tabless stays that I found on Etsy?
@FantasticalFolliesCostuming
@FantasticalFolliesCostuming Жыл бұрын
Yes, the tabs are there to help distribute the weight of the skirts. I do find tabbed stays more comfortable, too, than non-tabbed "historybounding" stays, since I'm squishy and the bottom edges always kind of cut into me when I sit. But if you're on a time crunch, and that's what you can find in your size and budget range, then I wouldn't let the lack of tabs stop you. You can always make a pair later down the road if you need to 🤷‍♀️

It's the Simplicity 8162 pattern by American Duchess. You can buy it here: www.americanduchess.com/collections/books-and-patterns/products/simplicity-pattern-8162-18th-century-underpinnings?variant=35802354516118 Redthreaded also has a very good stays pattern that's similar, with better instructions. If you're normal- or longer- waisted and not comfortable grading patterns, that's probably a better option. redthreaded.com/products/17stays-pattern
