I recently had a new USA Gibson SG in for a pick-up swap. The owner wanted me to fit a Seymour Duncan Invader. On removing the control plate, I discovered that the innards of the SG incorporated the new Gibson wiring plate with 'Quick Connect' connectors! This meant I had to modify the plug to fit a Seymour Duncan (allowing for the wire-colur change as they are different). Not as difficult a job as you might think if you take your time...

I bought a Seymour Duncan Invader to fit into my SG Standard and was dumbfounded when I opened it up and saw the quick connect system. After hours of googling and finding nothing helpful I checked KZfaq and found this video. It literally saved the day, I could't believe i'd found a video for my exact situation. Excellent to have the detail for the wiring, I would have screwed it up majorly if not for that information. Thank you from Australia my friend! Liked, subscribed and i'll be watching through the rest of your stuff for sure.

Thank you, sir! I told a friend that I would glady change the pups in his Les Paul for him. I'm a luthier and no stranger to guitar wiring, but when I opened up the electronics cavity and saw a bunch of plugs and circuit boards...I thought this was the best way to handle it, but I'm happy to see someone else who had done it. This is a great video, and I'm glad I found it.

I firstly found the seymore Duncan page about changing the pick ups in a newer sg,using the quick connectors, it actually tells you to use the same colour wires and connect same for same, except the yellow being earth! FFS! Did that and I wish I’d seen your video first ! Now I’m stripping my sg out again!

Thanks for this tutorial! I recently put a seymour jb into my gibson tribute with the quick connect. I assumed red was hot and black was ground on the seymour. This is helpful. There's a guy here in the U.S. that's selling pre-wired plugs for the Gibson PCB. He'll color-code the plug wires for whichever brand pickup you'd want to install. Gibson probably devised this system to keep players from straying outside of the Gibson "family". Like a cult.

The first time I did a Seymour Duncan swap on a Gibson with quick connect it was quite the adventure. I sat there like an idiot for a while looking ant colors and getting all flustered. Thanks for this. I am doing the same mod here. I was thinking of just disconnecting the connectors, and Gibson 61 Zebras, and just soldering the Seymours directly to the Lugs on the 2 Volume pots bypassing the connectors all together. Hi Victor. Thanks for getting back to me. Yes, I did it last night, and was very neat In fact. However, I am not happy with the Duncans, so I am going back to the 61 Zebras. I think my problem is, and this is another thread all together that my Amps are all high gain. So the lower out put 61 Zebras match a high gain amp like the EVH 51150 III I just have to apply the solder iron to the lug, and remove the black hot wire. There is plenty of room inside the control cavity route too to work. Best regards.

I've just done the same modification with the same pickup on a les paul tribute model. Only difference is I didn't put heat shrink tubing on the bare wire as you did. There's noticeable feedback that is reduced whenever I pinch the bare wire. Is the lack of shrink tubing on the bare wire the cause for this in your opinion or likely another issue? Thanks for the video it helped tremendously with troubleshooting the same issue I had when I realized Gibson used circuit boards now.

Great video! I have a quick question: Normally with thicker wires, I can twist them together before soldering. These wires are so thin and I can't get them to stay together with twisting or tying, even with tweezers. Is it ok to just tin them, then put them really close together and solder them straight just like that?

NG One Seven I went ahead and cut off a little more of the wire insulation so that there was more exposed wire to work with and twist. Doing this allowed me to twist them together before soldering, and in order to compensate for what I had cut, I used extra long pieces of heat shrinking tube to cover them afterward. Long story short: I did it, and everything is working great now. Thanks!

In effect, there are 2 x ground wires on a split coil humbucker. On a 4-core [split] pick-up, you have a North coil and a South coil. Wires are North Start, North Finish, South Start + South Finish. North Start is HOT and South Start is ground (you solder this with the bare wire). North Finish + South Finish = joined together...

My performing has been taking off, but just that non-pre-amped piazo is hell for the sound people, and even with a sound hole cover its kickin up quite a bit of feedback and no way to correct it from the guitfiddle. thank you for your time and the wonderful show! i understand if this is more of an electric crowd, i havent found an answerer with certainty yet.

@FretFriendGWaL
@FretFriendGWaL 6 жыл бұрын
It already is 2 wire as 2 wires should be joined together and be soldered to ground (back of the volume pot). The other single wire is 'hot' (or 'live') and should be soldered to one of the volume pot lugs or the pick-up selector switch. It won't be rocket science to work out which is which if you have a multimetre. You could even try different combinations until it 'sounds right.' A google search might furnish you with a more concise answer. Victor... PS: Interesting name! How do you actually say that?
@FretFriendGWaL
@FretFriendGWaL 6 жыл бұрын
Best way to figure it out is to measure different combinations with a multimeter. Whichever gives the highest reading is the way you should fit the pickup as that will be 'full' humbucker mode. This page may give a better answer than I can; www.jemsite.com/forums/f18/ibanez-3-wire-humbucker-wiring-problem-133534.html

do you think it would be ok to use electrical tape instead of heat shrink wrap?
@FretFriendGWaL
@FretFriendGWaL 5 жыл бұрын
If you have no heat shrink wrap then yes. Anything that insulates is better than nothing. You could even use the flex/casing from a piece of old hookup wire so long as the core fits...

@FretFriendGWaL
@FretFriendGWaL Жыл бұрын
No you don't remove anything. The braid is Ground (earth) and the inner is Hot. You have 2 wires: the most simple configuration! Just solder it to the correct position on the quick connect plug. Ignore what is not there. Victor...

There is an easier way and you don't have to cut off the mini connector (which makes the mod completely reversable). Disconnect the old Gibson pickups, then, using a multimeter, buzz out the pickup PCB connector to the associated PCB pads. After working out the appropriate colour code transpositions, solder the new pickup wiring to the identified solder pads. Just be aware, Gibson use high temperature solder, so you need a very hot iron and get in quickly, not overheating the PCB pad.

Excellent mate thanks. The PCBs are fine, just wish wiring colours were universal. Its dumb. But then so are USBs, an oxymoron as nothing is universal! Type A, B, C micro etc. Don't even mention Apple!

Looked at enough vids to tell me you are are doing the least costly way of dealing with those damn Gibson plugs. Others are showing buying additional cables with plugs that act as adaptors and some are expensive enough to say screw it all and rip out all the PCB and just install regular pots with soldered wire. To rip everything out, pots, wires toggle and input jack is around $150! I already have a solder iron so just need the heat shrink tubing which is around $10 so thanks for helping avoid a big headache. I hope Gibson abandoned all that PCB crap in their guitars because I think it was a factor as to why Gibson lost some sales in recent years.

@@FretFriendGWaL I have TWO Gibson LPs both with those damn circuit boards. One has white plugs like in your vid with the SG so the five distinct wires but the other has BLACK plugs with two tiny holes in each plug. I snipped the plug away from the main pickup lead and tried peeling back the covering which is some kind of metal mesh and the wires are indistinguishable except for green wire which was soldered outside. So now what to do? I have Duncan JB for bridge and 59 for the neck and they both have the five wires with colors. Help!
