In this video we show how to fit the HD25 mass loading and damping kit and also take some readings to see the changes that it makes to the frequency response. We also do some tests to see if the older HD25 drivers from before 2016 sound different from the updated version.

The midrange peak on the unmodded driver is due to the felt disc interacting with the air cavities formed by the small stiffening partitions. The increase in low end after modding is from partially blocking the driver ports. I've tried blocking them more and it created a minor peak around 70 hz, which also extends the sub bass even more. I used sheeps wool to replace the felt disc and it cleaned up the upper mid peaks along with flattening the treble a little more.

Nice. Thanks for the feedback. I am planning on making a fancier mod for them next month hopefully so I will have a good play and do a load of tests with different configs

Thanks for this type of content, the nerd in me love it! Haven’t got the HD25, but the Beyerdynamics and HD600 has been of great help!

Got Amperior, and ironically the "ring around the driver" part was much easier to do (which was success) because I wasn't able to remove the housing due to the rigid aluminum cups. Almost ruined headphones not by doing the ring mod, but instead of attempting to remove the housing. Is there any tips for that? Also don't want to ruin the cups by digging some metal against another metal... Sorry if it's too much to ask...

Unfortunately i think the only option will be to use a flat head screw driver or spudger to lever the driver out. If you did mark the aluminiun while prying it open, it would be in a place you could not see when it was back in one piece as the pad would be covering it

Just completed modding my HD25 with this damping kit and the aluminum cups (which fit and appear like OEM btw). What is the benefit of removing the felt donut behind the driver? I've left them out by recommendation here, but curious if adding them back would help with additional dampening.

The effect is pretty subtle and it have been a long time since I tested it but from what I remember you get a little less upper treble with it in but it reduces the sound stage a little... As I said, it was pretty subtle, I just preferred the sound with it out

Greetings from Paraguay :), I just bought one of the last 3 units that were left in stock, I will mod my new hd 25 se it's a shame to open them from the box, one question, the greatest risk to the time to open the driver is to force the wires that are with glue or break the driver but I think it's more appropriate to open the driver with tweezers than with a screwdriver as you showed in another video, the real question is Would I achieve better or worse acoustics if I left the old cotton damper + the mod or would it be counterproductive? And there really wouldn't be any risk in opening if I'm careful with glued wires and I am very soft with the driver?

It would be down to personal taste, you may prefer the sound with the original felt disc. I think, as long as you are careful, there is not much risk. we sell hundreds of kits and have not had anyone kill a driver since this video was uploaded

That sounds great i cant whait to put my order inn! Just a thought have you conssiderd using brass picesfor the mass loading? It is great for gounding vibrations in speakers fasteners, spikes etc.. I have used brass to mass loading the back of the cones on a pair of koss porta pro with great resualts they sound better at this point to me then the stock hd 25 that i own i my opinion and they have been kramer modded and i cut out a center hole on the pads and soon to be mmcx converted they sound more natural and more musical and just emotionaly pleasing at this point witch is cracy at that price... But i have stock hd25 no modding done yet but i ready to try ;-) @@CustomCans

What's the difference in the sound between old version made in Ireland and the new version made in romania?

I'm the only one who wonders what the shock absorber kit is made of? Can the material of what is made in my country be obtained? What is it called or is it some secret? greetings

It is just bitumen based sound deadening material. It should be available most places - it is often used on cars to reduce noise

Great comparative video. I will definitely order the mass and loading mod. Maybe the drivers need a little bit more time to break in. There's a guy that stated on the hd 25 head fi long thread that he started noticing noticeable changes on the highs and overall response of the 2020 model after about 60-80 hours of use. www.head-fi.org/threads/hd25-1-impressions-thread.163153/page-200

Yes ... Not sure how long they need but even if they are the same version you can hear the difference between a nicely warn in pair and a box fresh pair... Maybe it had not left them burning in long enough. The link for the kit is now up in the description

Hey Jason, whats the name of the red headphone amp you are using?
@CustomCans

Ah.... That red one is a focusrite scarlett but I will be using that for recording in a future project - the amp on top of that is the one I am using for testing and that is an SMSL SP200

sorry that I ask question here , I have a hd25ii , and I want a hd25 aluminum, is that possible i got a hd25 amperior and exchange the metal case with the plastic case and make a hd25 aluminum ? Are they compatible?
@CustomCans
@CustomCans 2 жыл бұрын
Yes the amperior earcups will fit the older MKII HD25 drivers - the amperior used the same earcups and the HD25 aluminium. The latest HD25 drivers do not fit as tightly in the aluminium housings though

@CustomCans
@CustomCans 2 жыл бұрын
@@makeow Yes... If they have HD25-1 ii written in the small square in the centre of the left earcup then the drivers should fit. If it just has the sennheiser logo, then it is the newer driver. You can use the new drivers but may have to glue or tape them as they don't click in firmly enough

It does not make as much difference on the 1990s as the lower models as the drivers are already quite heavy

@@CustomCans Thanks, i just have to try it anyway as its so cheap. Balanced mod took a little bit of base away i felt but not by much. Maybe it just increased the sound stage elsewhere giving that illusion, who knows lol.
They are beyond 9000 but is this the sennheiser HD25's Final form?
