In this video we will show the process of taping a tubular tyre to a carbon rim. Jay Taylor from Taylor Cycles uses a 3M tape to get some tyres stuck down on the Caden 30mm tubular rims. This goes against the typical gluing process but ultimately delivers a much more cleaner and convenient option.

I ride Zipp 303 tubs on training rides, glued on, and carry a pre-glued spare tyre. The glue reactivates when it goes up against the glue on the rim to replace a flat. I use Conti Gatorskins for training, Conti Competition on Edco's for racing. Never tried tape as I can be quick with glue, but now might be the time. I can change a flat quicker than club members with clinchers and tyre levers, and certainly quicker than tubeless, which many without the right technique struggle to get off and on. I also use sealant in the tubs and it has saved me many times.

Tried tubs for the first time, and went the taped path. Simple, clean and neat. I believe taped adhesives have come in leaps and bounds, compared to 50 year old tech that is mastic/ contact cement.

I've been running clinchers for decades. I only got my first tubular wheelset last year. I haven't done much riding on them yet. I decided to go the tape route, and don't have any regrets yet. I went with the TUFO tape on the rear, and the red 3M tape on the front. Just to see which one was better. My red tape wasn't transparent like the one shown here. Thank you.

I had no idea that fitting one was considered to be such a big deal. I've run tubs on my track bike since I got one in the 90's, and didn't think anything of changing tyres myself, just went ahead and did it (with tape). Couple of nice tips in there though, which I found out by trial and error... pre-KZfaq :)

I always tape over the stem hole because the bottom of the stem rubber gets pushed up through the sharp edges of carbon or aluminum valve holes. I also use 3m, but mine is blue and thicker. I also like to see tape protruding through the valve hole surrounding the stem. Its worked like a charm for me for many years.

I have been running tubulars on my Enve’s for several years and have been relatively fortunate. Nevertheless, flats are inevitable and I just walked out to find a flat front tire caused by a huge piece of glass. I’m sick of glueing and so I’m going to give this a try. My question is this: I have two rounds of old glue on the carbon rim currently. Is the tape more effective or less effective with the old glue on the rim? Is removal of the glue is necessary to proper installation of the rim tape? Cheers in advance.

Thx for the tutorial, helpful make me want to go for it! And It raised a question in my mind. You promote the Caden (DEcadenCE) wheelset, I would be interested to get a bit more on the wheelset. A review perhaps. Based in the USA, i have a hard time to find proper current review on the wheelset. My personal interest are around 5 aspects: - Riding characteristics of the wheelset (stable, nervous....) - Behavior in windy situation - Performance (aerodynamic, compared to your ZIP on the WINSPACE on your lovely hill of yours ;-) ) - Hub (engagement / maintenance) - long term review (not now i know) , at the end i would want to know if money was not a thing would these be your recommendation? That could lead to a wheel comparison and review based on what you have experienced so far. Thx so much for trying more affordable options for all of us, cycling is becoming such a luxury sport and triathlon (my gig) feels simply elitist, just sad. Keep going th good job!

Thanks Cam yet another interesting video. I have a question for your friend. How about leaving a small gap (5-7 cm) opposite to the valve without tape to facilitate dismounting the tubular fast while being out there? and in case of a flat would it be safe to mount a spare tubular if that 3M tape comes off with the flat tub (as I have experienced when done at home), much less with Tufo tape that tends to stay on the rim. Cheers

Been running Caden tubular wheels for 18 months with veloflex arenberg 25mm tires. I wore out a rear tire(ie no punctures) and removed that tire at home to replace. What surprised me was all the Caden supplied 3M tape remained on the rim and was very sticky 👍. I carry a spare tire and in the case of a puncture on the road, would have no hesitations in ripping that tire off, fitting the spare and continuing the ride.

Hi there from France, It's pretty simple really, just take à spare tubular with you (and a means to inflate it),they fold up and you just pop it in one of your jersey pockets. But let's be clear here, if you're happy on clinchers there's no real reason to change. Tubulars require alot of work. Here in Europe they are not that expensive, plus there is a real tubular culture. Have a great day 😊

Hi from France, I'm a tubular man, been running on tubulars for years (a personal choice, no hate mail please), i glue my tub's (again a personal choice, no hate mail please). But what a great video, showing that it's not at all that hard the gluing part, but i'm telling you now the ride on tub's is just something else. Just a question, how do you find those Maxxis tubulars ? I run exclusivly Vittoria (again a personal choice) the Corsa in 25mm. Do you find a difference between tubulars and tubeless tyres ? Do you run on tubulars daily or only on race days ? I love your chanel,i'm an Aussie (from Melbourne,no hate mail) love your accent and just they way you get things done.

Hmm. I'm still a bit skeptical on tubular tape. Is it really as safe as glue? As in it doesn't roll off even on hot days? Or with rim braking heat? Edit: I've also noticed it's hard to get the tape perfectly aligned to the wheel, as it sticks to the tube immediately, whereas with glue, the tube "slides on" the wheel, allowing for minor adjustments to be made before they completely adhere.

@@muhtah9970 No you won't damage the rim, I have used tubs on my mtb with Mariposa tape and would gently use a screwdriver to lift the tire/break the glued bond on the rim (small section). Then you roll the tire off the rim starting with the unbonded area. The guy taping the tubs forgot to mention you need to give the glue a day to cure, saying "ready to ride" at the end of the video after he just finished is a good way to roll a tire.

I use various 3m tapes in a more industrial setting. There are different tapes with different glue strengths available. Some of them are just crazy strong. One of the tapes I use comes with a warning not to use it anywhere which can't be damaged if you need to remove it. I use it to mount stuff on the wall at home and it will take chunks of concrete out when trying to remove it. Other tapes are designed for rather more easy removal-most likely what is needed for tubular tires! Really amazing stuff.
