If you're using deep or aerodynamic wheels, you'll probably need valve extenders - here's our guide to fitting and using them. Important to get right, frustrating if you get it wrong.
Click here to subscribe to GCN: gcn.eu/Subscrib...
There are two types of valve extenders; those that require you to remove the valve core and those that don't.
To fit both types you'll need some silicone (plumber's) tape, a set of small pliers and it's also a good idea to have some insulating tape to hand.
The important thing is to make the seal as air-tight as possible, hence the silicone tape. Deep section wheels are also really prone to the valve rattling. So, get some insulating tape and wrap it around the valve at the point that it exits the rim.

They are leaving out the most important, and totally counter-intuitive part. What you are going to do is leave your presta valve wide open, as you have never ever done before in your life. Then you are going to screw on this extension leaving the valve wide open. From now on, only the pressure in the tube will hold the valve shut. It took me about 45 minutes of fretting and thinking I was crazy to figure this out. After a lifetime of screwing these valves shut, you'd think they might mention that now you're expected to leave it open. They also fail to mention that you'll be shit out of luck if you have a flat while riding since you probably will not have thought to bring a long skinny thing (perhaps the smallest hex wrench?) to poke down into the extension to let all the air out. You also will be out of luck if you didn't bring along teflon tape and pliers with which to take the extension off of the old tube and fit the extension on the new inner tube. Perhaps not the most helpful video I've ever seen.

Are you sure about that? In this particular video at 1:15 it is IMO that he does make quite a good point of opening and securing the valve in its open position. Maybe it has been edited since you wrote this.

I currently ride butyl tubes with 80mm valve stems, and would continue to carry these tubes as spares if I ran latex tubes with valve extenders, which I'm considering for next season. Just too much to mess with at the side of the road if a puncture does occur.

Got some latex tubes as heard they have lower rolling resistance, but valves not long enough so got the extenders set them up only to read I should have wrapped them! All this I google the benefit and it's just 1 watt per wheel!!

Take note that it's always good practice to wrap the tape the same direction that you're going to screw the extender on otherwise you could unravel the tape and not make as good of a seal

@@trifitguy all of these tips are basic knowledge. Everything is easy once you know how to do it, remember there will be plenty of people who have never even used silicon tape before, if they sat and thought about it they'd figure it out but it's easy to get 'stuck in' without thinking things through, we've all done it.

Thanks. Today I had my first puncture using deeps section wheels. Couldn't understand why pump wasn't getting air in the tube. Sat at side of road just completely miffed. Then I found this video and boom!! Had no idea I'd be needed tape to help seal the extenders. Managed to pinch of the old valve. Got me home. #allthegearandnoidea.

Dan ! This is the kind of mech detail i respect the heck out of ! Most mechanics I have spoken to seeking advice on this topic have glossed over it and not one man jack has tipped me on the sealing method you describe. I run tubulars and a "top " mechanic installed a new one and it leaks like mad. I am running brand new gatorskin tires and this is the second tire he installed like this. when i inquired as to how to attach a valve extender , 3 different mechanics said i just screw it on , and good to go. no tips, no advice as good as yours, so thanks ! keep 'em comin' ! jim

Guys, it is not 'silicon' tape but PTFE thread tape. Any Plumbers' Merchant will sell you some, or perhaps your local hardware store. Also, you do NOT need so much tape to get the seal. I know, I worked with the stuff for over 15 years.

As long as your valves are long enough that your cap threads are showing, you can either use a schrader adapter or a pump with a screw on head. I buy commonly available 48mm stem tubes but a regular clamp on pump head won't work. So I use a Lezyne pump. The screw on head works perfectly. Same with the Lezyne mini pumps.

Schraeder adapters are good to carry. Not every pump fits Prestas. Same with those tiny valve stem wrenches, as some stems come off with screw on pumps. Weight is in the 0.1 gram range. The Lezyne pump heads are known for pulling stems out

So I find that valve extenders are great when your out on a long ride but the tube a buddy might lend you isn't the length of your wheel. Ie. You have a 60mm and your tube is 40mm. I know you recommend using the teflon or silicon tape to prevent air spillage. What are your thoughts on this while out on the road?

extenders are good if have deep section wheels and.... 1) you can't find tubes with long enough valves in your area 2) you have several spare tubes all with short valves that won't fit 3) you are on a long ride, get a second flat and you need to borrow a tube but the loaner has a short valve (still may not work but...) 4) you have long valves already but believe size (length?) matters.

You need to make sure the Teflon tape is wrapped with the direction of the thread, otherwise you will tear it up as you screw it in. Also, with the first type, to avoid so many turns you can use the yellow grade gas tape (AS/NZS) which is a thicker tape specific for pressurised applications. Three wraps will be sufficient. Loctite hydraulic sealant is also an option but requires about 20 minutes for the initial cure before you can pressurise the tube.

okay, i get that once installed, the extender is not to be removed until ready to uninstall the tube for whatever reason, BECAUSE the "silicon" (i think the narrator actually means teflon, but who knows, maybe the world of materials science has now invented a new miracle product made from silicon) tape becomes unusably frazzled upon unscrewing the extension, and must be replaced every time the extension is re installed. so now, with the presta plunger deeply buried inside the extender, how do i use a free-standing accurate pressure gauge to verify the correct tire pressure after inflating with my Silca pump which like all Silca pumps works really well but has a horribly inaccurate integral pressure gauge? inquiring minds want to know.
@bushsub
@bushsub 7 жыл бұрын
Quite misleading and lacking in information this video. Not like GCN really. Take a close look at the closeup of the first case when he finally threads the extender on the tire valve. After just having finished putting teflon tape on the treads of the tire valve, the close up shows NO tape on the tire valve but rather shows the tape wrapped around the threads of the extender. Yes, that's right, they've cut in the closeup of the 2nd type of extender where he's discussing the first type....and no, it's NOT all the same. This is supposed to be a tutorial for those of us that are unfamiliar with the topic. Details are critically important. And I didn't hear him mention that in the first case, the valve lock should be left open...but since the closeup of that type of extender was replaced for the second type, there's no way to otherwise pick up that important point. Think this one should be remade guys. Cheers

I’m enjoying the bike so far kzfaq.infoUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA My only real complaints are the brakes and the pedals. I feel like a bike designed for bigger people should have much larger pedals and more heavy duty brakes. I’ve only gotten two really good rides out of it, minimal downhill action, and the brakes feel like they’re already going out. A larger person has more momentum, so I think this wasn’t thought through very well. Also, I wear size 13-14 wide shoes. My feet cramp up on these pedals that are clearly made for smaller feet. Since I’m not a pro rider (and I don’t think many are who purchase this bike) I don’t think that the straps on the pedal are necessary at all. None of this takes away from the enjoyment I get from riding, however. I’ll just head to a bike shop to improve on a few things.

Bad editing. The non-removable valve bit used footage threading in the removable valve extender. Adds confusion to what otherwise would have made sense. Also bad far away shots where no one can tell what you are doing.

Why don’t you just buy a innertube with a 60mm valve for 3 quid

Man, there's some janky editing going on in this video. At 2:13 you're teflon taping up the valve without the removable core. In the following cut at 2:20, you're fitting the extender to a valve with no core. WTF?

This seems such a faf! Why not just buy new tubes and save the older shorter ones for when you are using smaller wheels or just sell them one of your mates. Job done!

Wow very bad video Editing, you guy used the Clip from the removable core, on the non-removable core seen. That was Confusing for my son he is just 9 years old and i see why and you Never shown how to remove the air out on the non-removable core with the Extension. People are going to be confused about that guys. You need a better Mechanic and video editor. Before you guys get passed bye KZfaqr who knows better. I love this show but you guys disappointed at times about bike mechanics the is nice guy but sucks sorry for saying that but it's true. He is killing the show. Time over time mistake. Please don't let this go. Do something before you guys Become a laughing stock. Well good luck with your show.

Shouldn’t have to watch this video five times to try and see what your doing keep a close up on what your doing the entire time. Your face doesn’t show us what your hands are doing so why do you keep cutting to mid/wide shots. This video should be redone.
