I had a broken iron flange. The plumber didn't advise replacing it. Gave the same speech that Steve used. He used a plastic flange that fit inside the old one. It completely covered the broken ring. Toilet hasn't leaked in ten years.

Caulk the front and both sides and it will not only stabilize it but keep it from pulling out that spanner ring that did absolutely nothing. With the way it was left it's only a matter of time before the owner is right back in the same position with a loose toilet.

I know people don't like to mess with things that have "worked for 75 years" but I have never been too ecstatic with how toilets mount to their flanges. People rock side to side on toilets, lift a leg when using a toilet, or stand on the toilet. Maybe it's just me because I have rental properties and people are often very hard on things, I'm always dealing with some sort of plumbing issue and I often have to make most everything as "idiot proof" as possible. I've never enjoyed tightening a new toilet down against the porcelain to compress the wax ring, and often you're relying on 1/4-20 bolts, with super thin washers to hold down an entire toilet; And you have to trim the bolts down after installation for the caps to fit - That's ALWAYS a blast with a sawzall!! I try to find the 5/16-18 toilet bolts and now use the rubber/poly ring instead of the wax rings. But I sure wish toilets had a better way of mounting, especially now that people use different types of tile or vinyl, and floors thickness is often built up over the years when floors are replaced or gone over...

A good trick taught to me a long time ago, is to sit on the toilet to squish the wax in place, and then tighten the nuts.

i keep a little half pound bag of grey grout. stick a couple quarters under for shims grout it in . never moves. think i might have spent the extra 45 minutes and broke out the torch, oakum and lead ladle. the rocking is what broke the iron flange probably in the first place

Love those cedar shims! I use them for doors, windows, toilets and anything else that needs shimming. They used to be cheap. Fortunately I bought a couple of bundles back in the day. Nice fix as always!

I like to wedge stainless steel washers between the spanner flange and the cast to keep the flange from rocking.

Pick up a Milwaukee electric die grinder and small cutoff wheels. Works great on cast iron flange jobs.

I so much appreciate your videos as well as that guy in SC. Troubleshooting and some knowledge. I’ll do my own plumbing (trained by experts, I’m not one since don’t always practice). Electrical, no problem. Oil or gas I won’t mess with, especially after trying to bypass a safety on gas water tank about 10 yrs ago just to heat up enough hot water for a shower. I stopped after a flash. I cannot find an independent contractor locally I trust. Before heating season, I turn on the gas furnace, make certain the flames look normal, even after the fan turns on. I’m not afraid of changing hot surface igniter or cleaning the flame sensor. For AC, early in the season turn it on for an hour and feel the lines. Anything with charge or gas call a company. I’ve unplugged condensate lines on my own. I wish had someone local non corporate trying to sell me shit I don’t need. Your videos have helped on knowing symptoms, made me more observant on how my equipment normally works, and also, when to not go over my knowledge and call an expert. I’m not trained in gasses. Every electric permit I’ve always passed.

I dont use the plastic washers to snap the cap on i use a fat stainless steel washere and the put plumbers putty in the cap and push it on the bolt and i always use 5/16 bolts

I need to cut out the concrete and replace it because it broke apart. My only other option is to use that flange that has the rubber gasket inside you tighten. Definitely above my pay grade

Wow good idea warming up the new wax seal before installing so u don't have to jump on the toilet when reinstalling. I am finding out over and over again common sense doesn't always make sense right away 😂

When you put tiles down around where the toilet goes, always use a straifht edge to make sure the floor is level and even all the way across.

Interesting on those plastic nuts, that secure the bolt....when did those come out? I always used regular hex nuts.

Another thing when setting the fastening bolts to the flange house a metal washer and nut on top of flange to better secure bolt .

Plumber here- always set a toilet twice- once without the wax to set the shim location ( mark the outline from the bowl) then set and trim- never pound the shim after tightening the closet bolts.

I like the idea of the plastic bag. When I do a toilet I take a 1" putty knife, small roll of paper towels, razor blade scraper and shims. I usually use a two piece stainless round repair kit. I take one screw out and loosen the other than just wrap it around the flange and screw back together. Works good.

People used to say why did it break? Because the flange is broken, gone rotted and then complain when you tell them what it takes to fix them. Calk the shit out of that to keep it from wiggling.

As a temp fix in a bind that would probably work but to properly fix it would be better to cut out the flange and install a pvc to cast iron flange . And fasten it to the floor. Also the supply line used is prone to cracking and cousing leaks or even floods . It's better to replace with supply line with mettle nut
