FYI for all … Correct tapcon screw length is to add one inch to thickness of material (flange) you are going to screw through. Use a hammer drill to make correct drill hole. Use a vacuum to remove all debris in hole you just drilled.

That new tool you got for your drill works great if used properly. That drill bit is intended to remove glued PVC pipe from inside hub. That way you can reuse PVC fitting.

I had a similar issue.. I had the original cast iron flange or metal flange sitting about 1/2 inch below my surface floor tiles. I added a round plastic lid that was 1/2 height over the pipe hole.. Then I add the fast drying concrete and leveled it around the hole. This way the surface was completely flat. Then I added the plastic flange...stuck it in the hole and set it on top of the flat surface. I then drilled the holes with concrete drill just down to the metal flange.. Then I used metal drill to drill the rest of the way through the flange. Then screwed all screws and solid as a rock.. Luckly I didn't need any spacers below the flange.. now sitting perfect. Thanks for your video it inspired me to do this.

I normally use the insert flange, with silicone on the gasket...set it, put the screws in and pour anchoring cement through the bolt holes... it self levels... and the cement is the consistency of a milkshake for ez pouring... nice job...flange repairs can be a work of art....eye of the beholder and all...

I respect the hell out of you showing a job like this. As plumbers, sometimes we just gotta make it work. If it doesn’t violate code, then sometimes we gotta do what we gotta do. It also sounds like you know the owner eventually wants to redo that whole bathroom. The floor definitely looked pretty thrashed. So even though that toilet may be hard to service in the future, by the time it does, the bathroom should be renovated anyway. People saying you should’ve taken more time and chipped up that old flange yada yada must only work for clients with deep pockets. I say a job well done, given the circumstances

Two things that might help you out. 1) Cheapest small shop vac that Home Depot has. Remove filter and throw away. Use it to suck tanks and bowls dry in seconds. Also if you can't propress and have to solder with a little water in the pipe it sucks that dry too. I have set the vac hose on to another open pipe close to the joint to be soldered and it has pulled the water back away from the joint area enough to solder the joint. 2) Heat closet flange rings with torch until they are soft and then cut away with razor knife. You can also heat the part of flange inside the pipe, then take screwdriver and pry a section away from pipe, insert channel locks and twist peel it out. Fastest, neatest way I've found. Throw that drill tool away and save time and we all know what time is.

I usually put white cement on the whole area that will go to receive the toilet, but I don't know if I would have used it with the wooden floor, which is very elastic, maybe in this case I would have used the white silicone from sanitary ware but, you see the situation better, and certainly cement does not bring mold like silicone even if it is specific for sanitary ware. However when the job is done and the customer is satisfied, the deal is done. I like people who suggest you use an impact drill to fix the anchors in the concrete? If the floor was made of steel or wood, maybe yes, but since it is made of concrete, perhaps the vibrations break the concrete. But this is my opinion, do as you wish. Thanks to the video from another satisfied viewer and ciao from Venezia.

I wouldn’t use something that will ultimately become brittle and fall apart to shore up the base of the toilet. Exterior grade liquid nails works good. Just leave room for kitchen/bath sealant to cover the liquid nails so there will be no discoloring. Liquid nails will never deteriorate like cement or plaster products. Could also use loctite products.

I wouldn’t of used cement on that. Kinda really screwed the next guy. Would a used some soft wedges and silicon may of had to keep filling it until it got there I have also used plumbers putty on big gaps to make a wall on those big gaps then caulked it in its seems rigged but if you done everything right and just have an ugly gap for aesthetic it comes out nice

Back in the day we used to use plaster as a leveling agent for the toilet but it has no strength for what you are doing. You chose the best option I believe possible especially for a quick repair. If we are setting the toilet on ceramic or porcelain use grout to level them and make them not rock.the grout cannot be removed with a putty knife & Hammer for future maintenance if necessary

I read somewhere quickset doesn't work as well as anchor adhesive to fill in the gap around the riser. Quickset will chip when drilled the plumber was saying. Is there an additive to make the quickset stronger or should I stick to anchor adhesive?Thanks.

Try drilling the holes deep enough the first time. And tapcons are not prone to breaking if you use a mid to low impact setting. Like the video though keep em coming.

I just saw a bit on tap cons....im gonna be using compressed air to blow out dust hole first...a big problem.
@shadowhunter9713
@shadowhunter9713 5 жыл бұрын
Chuck Barron Tapcons seem to work best if you also slide a piece of copper wire into the drilled hole before you drive it in. I use 14 or 12 gauge romex wire. Just cut it the length of the screw and drop it in. If its a pass through hole put a dog ear on the top end of the wire so it can’t go through. If you have pristine material then its not necessary and most likely you will snap the tapcon. So test the hole first to see if strips out with an impact on low setting. If it does pull it out and drop the wire in and drive it back in. Vacuuming isn’t necessary unless you use anchoring cement. Sika works great. Enough dust should be removed during the drilling process for the screw to grab. Doesn’t hurt though.
@ChuckBarron
@ChuckBarron 5 жыл бұрын
wow i like the wire trick...i did use tapcons today with air can and it worked great...air can made dust in holes shoot straight up in the air....i was surprised by amount of dust was still in there. it got the shots....vid coming this week hopefully.. thanks shadow for info.

Whoever slapped the bathroom remodel job together did a bad job there's a big gap underneath the baseboard big enough for water or more precisely "black water" to get in there and do damage ! The hardwood floorboards look nice and expensive too bad they used it for the bathroom floor !

Plumber for 30 YEARS ? 30 Days I think ? Always block the pipe with something so junk does Not enter the pipe . Put the unit on something ? Not the bare floor making another mess ! Get the correct saw size or use a Dremel Tool with a 2 inch blade. Wear gloves . If I were the customer you would be replacing my floor and a total clean up of walls ! Try a SHOP VAC the work great ! Good Luck

Flange is supposed to sit on the floor. If it’s flush, the flooring has been changed from something like linoleum to tile or wood. It’s supposed to sit on the floor.
