How to Fix a Duck Hook with the Driver
Hitting a Draw Step-by-Step Checklist: www.mygolftutor.com/draw-check...
Blog Post: www.mygolftutor.com/how-to-fix...
-----------------------------------
Have you ever been on the golf course or driving range and wondered how to fix a duck hook with the driver?
The duck hook is a shot that nobody wants to hit - especially if there is trouble down the left side of the fairway.
Neal was experiencing some of the same issues and wrote:
I've been struggling lately with my driving. I've been hitting a duck hook with the driver, and I would love to be able to hit the ball straighter. Do you have any suggestions to help me out?
Before we get started, there is one thing I would like to bring to your attention, which is the importance of where you are striking the ball on the clubface.
I would like you to get a cannister of Dr. Scholl's foot spray, and lightly spray the face of your driver.
After you've done this, I'd like you to hit a few shots.
The chalk on the face will give you visual feedback, showing you where you're striking the ball. If the ball marks happen to be out on the toe, this is contributing to the excess curvature that you're experiencing on your tee shots.
We must address and fix this issue before we start working on anything else.
If the ball marks are in the middle of the clubface, and you are still struggling with a duck hook, then this next segment is going to be for you.
How to Fix a Duck Hook with the Driver
I am going to use alignment rods to explain what's going on with your duck hook.
First, the golf club on the ground is going to represent our intended target line.
When you're hitting a duck hook, what's happening is that your club face is pointing left of your target, and the swing path is significantly right your target.
From the picture below, you can see the alignment rod that is pointing left of the intended target line represents the clubface, and the alignment rod that pointing to the right of the intended target line represents the path.
The greater the difference between our face and path the more the ball is going to curve.
To reduce the curve, we are going to have to close this gap.
To ultimately hit a straight shot at the target, we will need our face and path to align at impact in relation to the intended target.
I find with some students when they see the ball starting left and then curving even more left , their instinct is to swing the club out to right field as far as they can to correct the problem.
Unfortunately, this exacerbates the problem, because the greater the difference between our face and path, the more the ball is going to curve.
How to Fix a Duck Hook with the Driver Drill
I'm going to give you a drill to practice when you go to the range.
First, we are going to address the path, and secondly we will address the face.
I want you to grab a head cover. We are going to use this to help change the path of the club.
Start with making a few swings.
If you find that you're catching the head cover on your follow through, this will indicate that the path of the club is going too far right (i.e. too far out to right field).
This drill will force you to swing the club more around your body, in an effort avoid the head cover.
This will help produce a more efficient path.
Initially, when you start hitting shots, a lot of them will go left; this is because your clubface is likely still going to be aiming left of your target at impact.
If this happens, I don't want you to worry about it.
As time goes by, you will instinctually learn to correct the clubface, as it will feel more open to what it originally was. But in reality, the clubface will be aiming to where you want the ball to start (i.e right down the target line).
What we are trying to do is to reduce the difference between where the face was originally aiming at impact and where the path was travelling. As the relationship between the face and the path tapers, the curvature of the ball will decrease.
The end goal is to get the face and path to align at impact in relation to your target. When this happens, you'll hit dead straight shots every time.
One Final Consideration...
Finally, if you are fortunate to have access to a Flightscope or Trackman unit, ask your golf professional if your angle of attack is influencing your path.
For those of you you who hit down excessively on a driver, this attack angle will have a big influence on the path.
The more you hit down on a shot, the further your path gets pushed out to the right.
Remember, the greater the difference between the face and path, the more curvature you'll see on your shots.
Having a shallower angle of attack will reduce the amount the path gets pushed to the right. In turn, this will make it easier to produce an efficient path, resulting in straighter and more consistent shots.

They say a hook is easier to cure than a slice. I used to slice all the time when I first started but was able to cure it in about 6 months. But I have been fighting a hook for over 2 years now!

I've fixed my path from 9 degrees inside to 3 degrees inside, but still feel like I have to really hold the club from turning over or use a very weak grip with the driver. I think what is going on is I am releasing or flipping early. My irons fly higher and shorter and my driver still closes. I think the fix is training a flatter wrist and later release but I only seeing gimmicky training tools to help this. Are there any drills to train to release later or maintain a correct wrist in the impact area? I also might be raising my wrists causing this flip as I have tried to hold off the club from turning over in the past, so a drill to avoid raising the hands in the impact zone would help me a lot as well.

Excellent illustration. This is my number one error. Question, would the club being too laid off at the top cause this in to out path? If so, are there any tips to fix the laid off position? Every time I try to swing steeper my hole swing gets thrown off..

It's possible Jarret. Take a look at my grip video... make sure you have a neutral grip. A poor grip can lead to an incorrect hinge and wrist angles, and this might be one of the reasons you are getting laid off at the top. Give that a go an if you have any more issues let me know.

I found that I hook and duck hook when I move the ball back in my stance and have my hands forward. Years ago I was taught to swing inside out and thus my problem. The duck hook happens with the driver and very seldom with any other club. To correct that I move the ball forward in my stance and start my swing with the hands and shoulder moving the club straight back from my line. I also found when this happens I go to the range and start with a wedge or 8 iron. with half swings to develop tempo. I hit as many balls as it takes. Once I am confident I move to a 5 iron then the 3 wood and then the driver. It works for me. In pressure situations I am more aware and make sure I am set up with the ball forward. It works for me.

Great job on the video. I'm 6'4 260lbs. My miss tends to be a pull or pull-draw, and not just with the driver. Face is square to slightly shut when it happens. So basically you're saying just imagine I'm trying to hit a fade and that will keep the face actually more straight at the target? I've been told this before by instructors, and just ended up hitting a high slice. Thanks for any advice....tired of adding penalty shots to my score.

eddie brown it depends on what shot shape you want Eddie, if the ball is starting where you want it to and is curving too much, you have a path issue. Sounds to me like you have a problem with the face at impact, it's closed. Try to focus on the face and where is is aiming at impact. Check and make sure you are not setting up with a club face that is aiming left of your target. This is a common mistake I see golfers make due to the design of irons nowadays. Don't use the top line of the club to line up, try make sure the leading edge is square to where you want to ball to start. I hope this helps.

+My Golf Tutor Still pulling it.....I make sure the leading edge is square at address with both the irons and the woods.....unfortunately, about 30% of the time the ball starts left.....the divots are pointing left when this happens with irons, the tee is pointing left after a driver swing. I think because I am tall the first move down is over the top to try to get back down to the ball. I wonder if longer clubs would help. It's really frustrating because when I don't pull it I can keep my score around 80. But these pulls are costing me big time. One swing can be right down the middle, and the next shot could be a pull.....never know when it will happen. Thanks anyway for trying to help.

possibly? I'd have to see it to be able to give you a definite answer. If you have a strong grip it can make it easier to roll the clubface. Try this drill, set up to a ball and have it 6" outside your left foot. Try to hit a "pull cut" from that set up position. I think it will help your path and also improve your clubface control

I think Sean's focus was more on getting the face and path more in line with each other. So someone with a pull hook(this is me), would swing more around their body while feeling like your opening the club face. I went from a pull hook to a nice long fade. Don't forget to use the DR. Scholls foot spray.

I have a problem where I either hook the ball too much or push it too far to the right. With some occasional straight shots. When I try to stop the hook, inevitably the push to right happens, and when I then try to close the club more vigorously to avoid the push, I then get my hook. It's a vicious cycle. Do you have any advice. I go back and forth between this two misses.
@mygolftutor
@mygolftutor 10 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you have a club path that is going too far in-to-out in relation to your target. Few things to try: Try keeping the club in front of you on your downswing, it's more than likely getting stuck behind you. Try placing an object just outside the ball, like I have done in the video. This will prevent you from swinging out too much, and help reduce the excessive right path. If you have access to a Trackman for Flightscope check to make sure you are not hitting down too much on your driver, that will contribute to a path that is too far right as well. Finally, check to see where you are striking the ball on the face. Heel strikes will add left to right curve, and toe strikes will add right to left curve to your shots I hope this helps. Thanks for your question.
@jtsimikas
@jtsimikas 10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. I actually do have an inside- out swing path. I hit off the heel most of the time. My misses right usually are straight shots(no spin). My misses left, definitely have hook spin. So I think I am attacking from inside, and swinging towards right field. I put a broken shaft outside the ball, parallel to target line. And I just can't seem to stop hitting the shaft no matter what I try. Even though I am trying concsiously to not hit the shaft, I still hit it. The only thing that sometimes works is trying to keep my arms really close to my body, but not sure if this the right fix as it feels really restrictive.

I am brand new to the game of golf and bought a set of clubs and went to the driving range for the first time today. I hit about 75 balls and id say 70 of those hooked way to the left (Im left-handed) and could not figure out what i was doing. I could chalk it up to being a first timer but I knew something was off. I was consistently hitting it 150-175 yards just not straight. Is it simply just hitting it on the end of the club?

Matt Hunter If you are a left hander and your shots are bending to the left then you are slicing, not hooking. Most people taking up the game tend to slice the ball. There are quite a few reasons why a slice happens but the most common is an incorrect grip. Try placing your hands so that they are turned left of centre on the grip. This is known as a strong grip and may help straighten out your slice. Good luck.
@mygolftutor
@mygolftutor 9 жыл бұрын
Matt Hunter Matt, that's called a slice. The chances are you're hitting it in the heel, if not.. then you have a path problem. If the ball is starting where you want and then slicing... you're club face is fine. If it's starting too left then you'll have to feel like you are rotating the face more to get it started online.... after that you'll need to improve your path. Start trying to swing more to left field to neutralize the path. Try a find a pro in your area to help you with this.

Check to see where you club face is aiming at address. It may be aiming left of your target, and you are returning it back to it's original position at impact. If your club face is aiming to where you want the ball to start, check your left hand grip (for a right handed golf) I'd like you to make sure that you don't have too strong a left hand grip. Check out my grip video on www.mygolftutor.com. I'd like you to have a neutral, maybe slightly weak left hand grip. This should get the ball starting in a better direction. If it's still curving too much you'll have to try and put and object outside the ball to prevent your path traveling too far out to right field. Check the video. I hope this helps. Let me know how it goes.

Went from a slice to a hook. Teaching tells you do that to fix the slice with a hook, which is wrong teaching to begin with but ok. But since I’ve figured out how to hit a fade 70 percent of the time I attempt 275 carry. 20 percent it may slice and 10 percent I hit a straight pull, I’m happy with that. But the hook is insane, but what’s teaching say oh let’s implement a slice to fix your hook. I’m not even going down that path I know it ain’t correct and is going get me off my fade

What Causes The Ball’s Starting Direction? Until more recently, it was generally taught that the swing path of the golf club determines the inital starting direction of the ball. So an out-to-in swing path for example, would start the ball left of the target line. As PGA teaching professionals we knew instinctively that this wasn’t 100% accurate, but it was easy to teach beginners that the “swing path sends it and the club face bends it”.The club face angle, it was taught, then determines whether there is any side spin on the ball, adding curve during its flight. We now know that the club face angle at the point of impact is by far the biggest and most important influence on the ball’s starting direction. Recent data (from launch monitors such as the Trackman and high speed cameras) shows that about 85% of initial shot direction is attributed to the golf club face angle at impact. #science #trackman #flightscope
