I purchased the part from Home Depot and replaced the broken upper portion of the flush valve (the part you said breaks easily was broken on ours) in less than 5 minutes!!! Thank you! We’re new homeowners and neither my husband nor I were taught how to be handy around the house. We’ve spent a lot on hiring plumbers and carpenters and electricians, but are feeling like we should learn some basics to save money. But who can we learn from? Well, this video helped us a ton! $25 fix and who knows how much more it would have cost us had we called the plumber. I have subscribed! Thanks so much! Next up…do you have a video on how to re-attach a faucet handle that’s fallen off? It’s a kitchen sink handle that sits on the side of the faucet.

I am happy the video helped you and that you subscribed. I haven’t fixed a handle in a while mainly because there are so many different models and usually by the time they get bad the customer wants an all new one. But I will definitely upload the next one that I do. Most of the time it’s a small rubber seal that needs replacing but you may need a special tool to get to it. Some are easy and some are not depending on its age.

Finally a guy that shows the detail of the pieces and the quick repair and replace methods. Nice video , appreciate the close-ups of the two piece unit. Nice thanks.. if you take a rubber hose that is a little longer , coil it near the canister connection - much like a service loop in electrical wiring , lightly zip tie it that way so the coil flexes - it might fix that issue pr prolong the inevitable. I saw someone disassemble the yellow cap , there is probably a nifty way to do that - but they showed no closeups.

Yeah, circular yellow cap was chipped so would not stay inserted into stem. That was the entirety of the problem: plumbers wanted $260 for parts, because bog box stores don't carry this part--they do--plus $160 labor to install, these charges on top of a $140 bill for a "diagnostic" visit. My math puts that at over half a thousand for a part that cost $9 at Amazon--also available for $11 at Lowes--and 60 seconds of labor.

Thanks for the help. My problem was with the yellow disk but it appears to be an installer induced failure. The installer apparently removed the two locking protuberances on the stem of the disk. I see no way it could be normal wear. After 6 years, the disk began shooting off whenever the toilet was flushed. Your video walked me through the disassembly and installation of a new repair kit. I was having no success finding the repair part until you said that I needed to get the model number off the tank. Thanks again.

Thank you, this worked. However, a couple of comments. Yes, the new one twisted apart just as you described. The old one took significantly more force to unscrew, especially where it is located. Hands do not work that well down inside the tank. Secondly, it is very hard to reattach the chain if the canister is in place. Conversely, it is very hard to twist in the canister if you have already reattached the chain. Catch-22.

My 2 year old Kohler Santa Rosa already needs a new gasket at bottom. At least I hope that is the problem. It will run a few dozen times a day in between uses. I tried pushing down on that canister thinking the gasket was just not sealing well. Had an older american standard that was replaced by the kohler and the old style flapper valve was not sealing and would run constantly. So this leak is better, but I guess I am heading to the store to get a new gasket.

Thanks. Our downstairs bathroom has a Kohler toilet and the top plastic where the hose connects to the flush valve (#1083980) just broke apart last night: the plastic sheared off. Earlier this morning I "Gorilla-Glued" the pieces as a quick solution, but dang-me the curing time is 24-hours - that is a lot of walking up and back down the stairs for my "Octogenarian Parents". I am planning to run to a couple of plumbing supply stores and see if I can get a replacement part.

@@UltimateDiyer Thanks I just returned home from visiting two-(2) local Plumbing Supply Stores, the first was Ferguson's Plumbing - their computer showed that they had the part in inventory, but it was not on the shelf - they could order it, but it would be over a week for arrival on Thursday, April 18, 2024. The second store was WinSupply Plumbing, but they are not a supplier for Kohler Parts. Prior to running my errand I searched the orange big box store's website and you have to order the part too. To my surprise the Gorilla Glue was holding very well, the clerk at the Ferguson's dropped the canister while he was holding, so I reinstalled the flush valve back into the toilet's tank. I don't think flushing the toilet will put more pressure on the glued area than the fall it took when the sales clerk dropped the cannister from his grasp while he was handling it.

My first thought was the chain/handle as well. Maybe the canister is defective and causing it to stick. The next step would be to replace it, if you are sure the chain and handle are adjusted and working right. Make sure the handle isn’t bent out of shape.

The only real adjustment that might help that is adjusting your fill valve so that the waterline comes all the way up to the top of the canister. If that doesn’t work, you may consider just replacing the canister all together and see if that solves the issue

I have a flush valve with a very hard plastic hose to the fill on the Kohler Canister. This canister has a stem that the hose won't fit on. I think the old one had a recess the tube used to be inserted in (it always popped out.) I want to cut off the hard plastic tube from system and replace with a tube that will replace it and fit on the nipple/stem on the canister. Any ideas? BTW I had ordered the wrong 3" bottom cannister but the flush part in the middle (1/4 turn beak-off easy) was all I needed. Great videos btw. I just need to bowl to fill when the tank is.

I’m not positive without seeing what it’s actually doing but what you’re describing sounds like the same problem with the Kohler yellow top sounds like when you go to flush the canister is hitting the rubber line, causing it to pop the top off. I would replace the unit and maybe see if I could find a more flexible line, Possibly a little bit longer that you can kind of pin up away from the canister valve.

First, thank you for the excellent video and explanation. Second, I have a question, mine doesn't flush fully unless you hold down the handle. My theory is that the canister is coming down to quickly, before letting all of the water out. I tried messing with the chain, it doesn't matter. This use to work by the way, and recently just stopped. Not being experienced in this area, does this sound like the canister itself could be the issue to someone more experienced? Or something else?
@UltimateDiyer
@UltimateDiyer 12 күн бұрын
In older units with flappers, the flapper gets hard and doesn’t function properly, so it could be the canister itself. Another possibility is that the water isn’t set high enough. I set mine as high as possible without overflowing the canister. Also make sure hard water hasn’t clogged the bowl jets, that also happens. Lastly the handle and chain can be out of wack but you said you messed with that. I would try a new canister unit if you have tried everything else. The fill valve can make things act weird as well but that usually doesn’t make the canister fall to quickly unless it’s not filling with enough water, “clogged”. Start with the simplest things first like water level, make sure handle is fully opening the canister, then look at water flow into the tank and bowl. Then try a new canister, new flush valve last resort. Let me know what you find, thanks for watching and asking the question

@@UltimateDiyerIt actually ended up being a calcium buildup on the siphon jet on in the inside of the bowl. The jet couldn't force water out fast enough to flush the toilet. Thank you Steve for the super thanks, it’s greatly appreciated! So first if the hose keeps popping off, I would replace it with a new hose. I’m assuming the plastic nipple is not broken off . You can get the hose at Home Depot, simply by taking the one off of the unit and matching it, but make sure that the new hose is a little bit longer so the flush arm doesn’t hit it. The new hose will be more flexible. I have even used a small steel s hook attached to the rear of the tank to hold the hose back. The noise could be coming from the hose coming loose and squealing or the part itself could be defective. I’m not sure if you fully replaced that part or you’re asking me if it needs to be replaced if it’s making a lot of noise I would probably just replace it. But before you do that remove the tank lid and flush the toilet. A lot of the time the squealing noise is coming from the fill valve, not the flush canister. If that’s the case replace the fill valve or the small gasket inside the valve. I have a video showing you how to do both on my channel. Hope this helps, let me know how it works out. Thank you again appreciate you watching.

That sounds like a defective fill valve. If they ran all new water lines they may have gotten trash in the line at hookup. I would just replace the valve fill valve, the part is under $20. There is also a gasket in the valve you can replace for a few bucks that might fix the problem. I have a video on it under my plumbing playlist.

It could be, if you pick up the entire unit it will include the whole assembly. I would try that, also make sure the water fill line isn’t too close to the top of the tube. Possibly and possibly the handle is bent and out of alignment. Every once in a while I change the entire handle assembly if it seems to be sticking. @UltimateDiyer
@UltimateDiyer 2 ай бұрын
Water comes out in 2 places. The hose and the bottom of the valve. The hose fills the bowl after you flush, that’s why it goes down the canister, If the tank isn’t filling up I would look close at the bottom of the valve and make sure it has water coming out of it after flushing. Sounds like there is something wrong maybe blocking the outlet in the valve assembly. I can’t see what happening but if it sounds like water is running down the drain, make sure the canister is seated properly and not allowing water to escape.

Everything seems to be working however the toilet doesn’t flush it fills the bowl with water and doesn’t flush. Used a snake, wide open. The toilet on the other side of wall back to back works great. It’s hard to diagnose without see it in action but if the bowl is filling it sounds like maybe the flush valve isn’t allowing enough water to enter or the fill valve is functioning correctly. Take the tank lid off and flush and see if the take is emptying completely into the bowl. You should only have a small amount of water in the bottom of the tank.

Harry, honestly it sounds like the fill valve needs adjustment. When you turn the adjustment screw, and then flush again is it not changing the water level at all? If it is not, you may not be working the adjustment screw properly or it’s defective. With the lid off do you see water running over the top of the canister? If not the gasket at the bottom of the canister may need replacing. It would be unusual for the fill valve or the canister gasket to be bad on a brand new toilet but not impossible.

Yes, it does just snap out. You have to go counterclockwise and push fairly firm. You’ll fill it click and then come loose. Just make sure that you have the water off and if you can either use a sponge in a bucket or a wet back to get the rest of the water out of the tank so you don’t have a lot of water on the floor And I do agree with what they say. It sounds like there’s something causing problems at the bottom of the valve.
