This presentation was excellent. I'm a 71 yr old grandmother, and installed 3 toilets over my lifetime Your video was the first to explain the complete installation process including the plate on bottom of tank. My silent flow valve never turned off, water was filling up and draining continuously for 2 months.I had an astronomical water bill. I still do all my home repairs myself, and always look to KZfaq for assistance. I thank you for your video, well done! , toilet fixed with ease.
Another tool I found you can use is called a trigger clamp. I have some because I do a lot of wood working. I do also use them for a lot of other things and they do come in handy. Even if I didn't have one, I would have gotten one of these to do this job, you more likley would use this for other things, rather than a specialized tool, that I hope you never have to use again. Other wise, I am with everyone else, this is a great video and it helped me a lot.

Your video is a KZfaq gem. It is well thought-out; your delivery is spot on; and the 24:48 minutes are PACKED with worthwhile information. Thank you for sharing such great content.

Just did one of these. Your video helped a lot. HOWEVER, that 4" nut was on REAL tight. So tight, that when I went to turn it, the base that it's screwed on to started turning. I had to use a small shim of wood (about 3/8" thick), and wedge it between one of the base's hex flats near the bottom on inside the tank, to hold it from turning. Just a heads up for others that may encounter this same level of tightness.

Your video is really great. Everyone has one on changing the canister seal but hardly anyone clearly explains about changing the 2 part tank and bowl flat seal. Your tool I bought saved me so much frustration. I hope I didn't get carried away and over tighten it!

Thank you for a perfect step-by-step procedure. Ordering your wrench saved me the stress I got trying to get the old one off with an oil wrench. Oh it came off alright, in a zillion pieces after I couldn’t get the oil wrench to budge. Perfect creation, thank you! I used the silicone grease and bought the new yellow gasket, since the Kohler kits still include the red one (2024). Thank you again.

It feels like a miracle that there is a tool to remove the nut. Not amount of trying will work. Just this tool. 3 trips to the hardwear store and lots of frustration. Thank you. Kohler should send these as part of their replacement kits and pay you for the copyright.

Thank you so much! This is really an extraordinary video, one of the very best home DIY repair videos I have ever seen. The details about specific part numbers for literally every single thing you mention in your video was for my particular situation a game-changer. There are a zillion videos that talk about the upper flush seal, but no one ever talks about the lower "flat seal", and not even the supply shops I talked to could come up with a part number. They kept bringing me the upper seal and saying "no, really, this is it." I walked away from this video with a complete solution, knowing what parts I needed and how to replace them. Just a next-level video. By the way, I was able to use a oil filter strap wrench to get mine off, but it was *not* easy, it still took a lot of tries. Thank you!

Hi Garrent ! Please forgive using the public forum but the contact link doesn't work on ebay. I am interested in your tool, but the ebay site seez there are none left. Looking like I have to replace the bottom seal. I can use my strap wrench. I actually have a chain vise grip that would do the job too, but I kinda like to use your tool in support, since it was you that got me this far.Do you make them still?

This was perfect - thank you! I needed to go only as far as the upper seal, which came out easily. I then scraped away some crud, searched for the replacement seal, and found t hat a nearby Lowes had it. I went there with the exact row and bin number and was in and out in less than 5 minutes. Installation was quick, and the leak is gone, You saved me more than a $100 plumbing bill, so many thanks!

You don't need solutions until you have a problem. Thank you for solving mine! I acquired a Kohler toilet problem with a recent move into a 11 year old home: chain kept breaking because the gunky red canister seal caused the canister to 'stick'. Great video thanks. You really went above and beyond in your description, even to the point of making your own wrench! Don't mean to cut into your inventiveness, but Harbor Freight oil filter pliers work great on the large nut (get the self-adjusting ones). In a pinch, you can also use a bar clamp, but if you are going to spend money, get the oil filter pliers as they will come in handy for all sorts of odd ball jobs, even removing stubborn oil filters!

I have the older style Kohler (The Cimmaron). As best I can tell, that huge flush valve nut is about 4 1/4in. You are correct. I did not find any tools made for taking that off. As luck would have it, I do woodworking. What I did use and what worked fairly well.....was a 24" Bessey K-Clamp. These clamps are beasts and I have found so many uses for them past simple clamping... I was able to not only remove that nut, but also tighten down the new one with the clamp.

Nice through video. I took a quick look at the eBay page but didn’t see the wrench there. I would never use A petroleum product like Vaseline on a o-ring or seal. Min 10:00 This was my question answered. I actually heard angels singing briefly. I live chatted with Kohler and they do not have this tool. Most of the DIY videos omit this key step. But one guy in his video had this tool... where is that tool??? While at it I'm replacing gasket between outside of tank and toilet. Purchased your wrench just now!!! Thx

Good vid, I suggest replacing these toilets just because the toilet get tough to flush. The yellow concentric canister seal will get bubbles holding one side of the seal up and allowing water through the valve. And lastly the time it takes... so you really wanna have to do this again...ever. Gerber Avalanch or viper. 3 inch flush valve. Standard parts. No monkeying around.

I get the idea of putting dielectric grease on the gaskets, but: many rubbers and plastics are attacked by oils and greases. Better to use dishwashing soap, smooths but does not attack anything. For getting that big nut off, use a "channel-lock" type plier, or better yet, go the whole 9 yards and get a Knipex. They're by far the best and open to incredible widths, and you can use them on anything, not just a Kohler toilet with that valve. Spend whatever you have to for Knipex pliers and wrenches.

not sure if it'll work, but that ~4" nut isn't likely that tight. Since I don't have channel locks that size, I'd try a C-Clamp or two, or something to that affect to grab it tight, then try and turn that. Or maybe even use some scrap wood to nail two boards ~4" apart on another board so you have a good grip to turn it from.

One reason parts get "weird" is chloro-mine degradation of buna-n rubber. Replacing with a special EPDM rubber seal might prevent the disintegration of buna-n rubber. Might help keep the nasty black from sluffing off onto your hands and internal mechanisms.
