www.VideoJoeKnows.com How to fix a leaking refrigerator ice maker water line (Part 2) is easy...when you know how. Joe has a refrigerator that is sporadically leaking & he thinks it's coming from the ice maker. someone saw a pin hole in the water line to the ice maker so "joe" at least knows the water line from the ice maker has to be repaired no matter what. So that's the first thing "joe" will tackle. Hopefully this how to fix/repair will prevent the refrigerator ice maker from leaking any more....but if it doesn't, at least that repair will be done before "joe" has to call in the big boys (errrrggg) to check out the refrigerator ice maker to see what in tarnation is going on with this water leak! Joe has prepared this instructional how to video series with you in mind....?

Thanks for posting this. Big help. Had a pin sized leak in my water intake hose discovered yesterday after the drywall ceiling in my basement starting dripping water. Who knows how long that slow leak had been going on. My line was connected to the copper and to the frig with these quick connectors and I had no idea how to remove the plastic lines - tried using pliers, etc no luck. I have a similar issue the tubing that goes from the bootom of the front of the fridge to the door for the water in the door has developed a pin hole leak in the tubing ( I suspect the new cat as the grill was off the bottom of the fridge from the last water filter change). Thanks! I've already had a plumber come out once to fix a leak in my water line to the fridge because it had a pinhole leak. Now the coupling that he put on (one of the copper ones) popped off because of freezing temps (the line is under the house in the crawl space). I will be replacing it myself to save money this time. can I just cut off the last 2 ft where my little hole that's leaking out of the line is? and then just stick that cut off and back in the back of the fridge and screw down that nut? reason I ask is the end of this plastic water line has a tip on it and I'm wondering if it will be ok without that plastic tip?
@1boobtube
@1boobtube 5 жыл бұрын
No. This video shows a quick connect butt splice for two ends of tubing. ie cut out the leaking piece of tubing and splice the remaining ends together. You want a compression fitting that connects the line to the brass fitting on the refrigerator. Take the brass nut/ferrule and attached stub of tubing to the hardware store they'll fix you up.

Hopefully somebody can chime in on this. I have a slow leak from the coupler. Do I need to replace the coupler, or simply pull the lines out, trim a little bit off and reinsert? Thanks

I would try to recut pipe end & reinsert coupler to see if your idea might work & if not then replace the entire coupler but if the coupler is fairly knew maybe it's not pushed on there far enough....? Let me know how you get it fixed. Thanks!

Me and my Dad tried the exact same thing, but afterwords it just began leaking at the new joint! Any ideas on how to fix that?
@VideoJoeKnows
@VideoJoeKnows 9 жыл бұрын
Ryan Dunham Not sure why it's leaking at the new coupling as a new coupling should not be leaking. Did you install 2 new couplings in your initial leak area or were you able to fix it with just one coupling. Maybe the new couple was defective. You could try replacing the coupling with a different new coupling. That's what I would try. Or maybe it's leaking just barely about the coupling at where the initial leak was coming from making you think it was the coupling...? Just a thought.

Sorry. That line was fine at the time so I didn't have to touch it. Maybe they make different size couplings so you could use on that too?

What you do with plastic hosing to connect to a brass fitting is insert a small compression fitting into the plastic tube which compresses the plastic from the inside against the compression collar on the outside. It is more stable and less prone to leaking than the plastic compression fittings which rely of a circular row of sharp teeth to grip the plastic hose. They cut into the hose and if you are not careful when moving the fridge out for cleaning etc, the teeth will slice right through the plastic tubing and you have a leaky mess to clean up.....again.

Can these plastic couplings leak over time?
@VideoJoeKnows
@VideoJoeKnows Жыл бұрын
Good question but I would think they will last a long time since they are made to repair these types of lines so my belief is they will last just as long if not longer than the rest of the line. Put it this way....your existing line is liable to get another pin hole leak before this coupling were to break down & leak. Thanks for stopping by & good luck with your repair...!

@@VideoJoeKnows wow quick reply thanks! I am looking at one of those plastic push fittings and am thinking it is about 15 or 20 years old and I am 75 percent sure it is what is leaking. Just doing some tests now over time to make sure.
@VideoJoeKnows
@VideoJoeKnows Жыл бұрын
@@meetro7522 Well then if you think it's leaking from there then my suggestion would be to remove it & install a new coupling fitting there. Hopefully you can see how to push the coupling apart & remove without cutting your waterline pipe any shorter so that you can still install a new coupling to simply swap out & then your waterline is still long enough...see what I mean?

These lines are absolutely the worst. Unfortunately, the people who owned our house before have this line behind the actual cabinetry. I have fixed this three times and just got another pinhole leak from this transparent cheap line. I used the copper version and they work great. However, these vinyl lines are absolutely crap. I am guessing there are inconsistencies in the thickness and as pressure builds areas with less resistance are compromised. It has always been little pinhpoles and mornings of turning off water at the sink cleaning up the leak and being generally pissed off.
@VideoJoeKnows

+Brandvegn It seems now days most of the lines coming out of new refrigerators are this plastic tubing. Probably to cut down material costs I'm sure. Did not realize though the issues you have brought up. Good to know. Thanks for your message! Joe :0

I did this the first time it broke and it worked. The tube just broke again, several years later. I had leftover tubing from the last time. The tube breaks at the bend/curve from the valve to the ice maker line. It breaks right at the center of the bend on the outside wall . Not from this repair, its the plastic tubing. Not sure why GE chose to bend this tubing. I am thinking I might have better luck with an elbow or two, they make those too, so that I do not have a stressed tube . Simple fix really, the first time it happened I thought it was the valve. 2ft of tubing less than 1 dollar.
@VideoJoeKnows

Sounds like a plan if you use the elbows as you have stated. Yes it's pretty easy once you've done it once! I did this repair so long ago I'm not sure if I could do it again....! LOL

Either from the basement/crawl space tap on a cold water line with a saddle clamp they sell kits and come up from there, or most typically tap the sink cold water supply line and route the hose inside the back of the kitchen cabinets.
