In this video I'll show you how to replace a leaky rear main seal and oil pan gasket in a Jeep Cherokee, but this procedure is applicable to many different vehicles. Jeep 4.0 engines are notorious for leaky rear main seals due in part to the two-piece design. With help from this video you can put an end to that giant oil spot in your driveway and keep the underside of your vehicle cleaner! Oh yeah... And don't forget to replace your engine oil once everything is back together! - Tim

Total jeep noob, love this channel. Got this done today, first time i did a relatively major project on a vehicle, far easiser than i expected it to be, just spent like 30 minutes lightly tapping the upper seal with a punch to make sure i didnt scratch anything. This video was extremely helpful. Yall are awesome.

@@joshuaevensen7647 Thanks, sounds like axle in or out is just fine.... I may be borrowing a buddies lift so hopefully it's a simple drop the pan, girdle, replace seal, clean surfaces and lay some RTV down. I did hear something about placing RTV in a spot to cover an inlet hole near rear main on purpose to prevent debris.... are you familiar with that? Trying to find as now just waiting on parts to arrive and reviewing job.

Thanks for the info Tim, I would like to add something that i just discovered replacing my seal. Included in the Fel-Pro kit is a small piece of white plastic kind of shaped like a Popsicle. It is referred to as a shoe-horn. By inserting the small end into the opening for the upper seal section you protect the seal from damage. It only took me 2 seals to figure this out. My Haynes manual also said to use soap to aid in sliding it in. That was a charm! i was able to push it in with my fingers! Over all a great video to cover the basics. I dropped my front end before i started and pulled the starter and the shield on the transmission(couldn't get socket in there with it in). I am replacing shocks anyway so it wasn't a stretch to drop it down, just wish I would have jacked it up higher to start! With the axle hanging I have to exhale deep to get under it!!!!

Yes, I saw a different 4.0 rear seal video that used Palmolive dish soap on the block & cap side of the seal. Also they used that shoe-horn to get the upper started then it went with fingers the rest of the way. Not sure why these have a leak issue but it looks like a regular thing every few years. Is there some special procedure to doing them so they won't leak again?

Just replaced mine today. I buggered up the new Mopar seal and bought a Fel Pro just for the plastic shield. I sprayed everything down liberally with WD40, and then put some motor oil on the seal. The seal slid right in by hand, and I only had to use a punch on the last 1/4".

I have a short arm kit with 6" springs and nothing was required to be removed in order to remove and install the oil pan.... Thanx Bleepin Jeep... quality vid's, good info, great style, and sometimes even some comedy... .. P.S: if your doing this job soon, make sure to check your oil filter adapter as it can leak enough to make a guy think he has a bad RMS.... I know from experience ;)

I just did my own oil pan gasket and rear main seal. To get the oil pan out with the axle still attached, you have to: 1. Remove the starter 2. Undo all your bolts 3. Jack up the front of the vehicle (or let it hang) so that the suspension is at full droop 4. Remove the oil pickup (two bolts) Then the oil pan should come out under the transmission pretty easily. If you coat the outer surface of the upper seal with dish soap and the inside surface with engine oil, you can push the seal in entirely by hand and you don't have to worry about damaging the seal by hammering it in. Also, the Haynes manual uses RTV much more sparingly and specifically warns against using RTV on the top of the bearing cap. I suppose that it's more of a personal preference how much scraping that you want to do the next time that you have to do this job (hopefully never).

The reason MOPAR does not recommend the use of RTV on the top of the bearing cap at the seal is that it will not squeeze completely out from the two machined mating surfaces. This will change the crush on the bearing shells and oil clearance. This is why the rear main seal half for the cap is made with the "ears" and slightly raised above the cap's mating surface so it will make positive contact pressure with the half-moon piece in the block without affecting the bearing.

Of course he'll have to do this job again. It's a Jeep 4.0. That seal design is terrible. My previous seal started leaking a couple of years after replacement, and is now bad enough that oil loss is too great to ignore it. I will be re-doing this job. Again.

My 88 xj was a bear to get the oil pan off !! It was no joy to get the pan gasket off either !! Somewhere I saw a guy rip his pan out with a chain tied to a 2nd vehicle !! Crazy !! I ended up needing rod bearings. The mains were good. Used the Felpro oil pan gasket. Loved the studs that come with it that holds the gasket and the pan into position so my hands were free !! Pricey at $25, but worth it and some report reusable too !!! Thanks so much Bleepinjeep for your helpful videos. They make all of the difference in getting my 2 recently purchased beaters, back on the trails !!!

This is by far the best vid on KZfaq on this job...Also very helpful if you are just changing an oil pan and/or pan gasket. (like the pan I bashed in on my '06 LJ) By all means, remove the exhaust from the manifold and remove the starter right at the git-go. It will simply make things easier. I highly recommend trying to get your manifold to exhaust bolts out first.. Maybe even as a separate job, just so you can be sure they can be separated without destructive means. It would suck to get everything drained and ready to go just to find out you can't get the exhaust out of the way. Removing the front axle is not absolutely necessary, but hey: Knock yourself out. Putting the vehicle up on jack stands (somewhere other than under the axle) will let the axle drop a bit and give a bit more working room. Big thumbs up for the FelPro gasket and snap-ups, too. I highly recommend.

With a 4 inch long arm lift I didn't have to take off my axle. The droop alone was more than enough room to work so smaller lifts may be able to do the same thing. I used a wood chopstick to tap out the seal and to tap the new one in. Prevents marring any of the metal surfaces. I also used a small curved dental syringe to push oil up into the cavity before I slid the new one in place, but I used brake cleaner to clean out the cavity first. I also used a chopstick to clean out the prior person's crappy RTV job that was stuck to the contact surfaces. I made sure to apply a small film of RTV where the seals meet each other. Center the upper seal so you have an equal amount extended on each side of the cavity. You want both sides to sit well after the cap compresses the seal. Hasn't leaked a drop in 6 years. The prior two main seal replacements I paid for were total crap jobs and pushed me to do it myself. It's actually not a hard job, just clean the surfaces well, take your time and it will go smoothly. I also ordered two Fel-Pro seals in case I jacked up the first one. For the price it's cheap insurance. Hope this helps somebody.

I did mine in my 91 Wrangler 4.0 no problem with the axle in. Also best off to use a brass drift when pushing the top half of the seal in. Only problem I had was one of the oil pan bolts snapped of where the pan goes around the oil pump. I believed this happened when I used an air ratchet. I was also told to use anerobic sealant on the rear main as it dries in the absence of air. I don’t believe I used RTV on the oil pan gasket and it did not leak. Good Video.

For anyone interested, I just completed the rear seal on my '02 GC Limited w/2" lift. With the frame on stands and the front axle hanging I had plenty of room to remove the oil pan. I DID have to remove the starter, no biggy, 2 bolts, be sure to disconnect battery cables. I did NOT have to remove the exhaust, there is plenty of room to get at the bolts. Those two pesky grip washers holding that odd piece of heat material came off very easily with a side cutter and twist. The only RTV used was at the front of the engine where there is a break and at the rear of the engine where the rear seal/bearing retainer meets the engine. I did also use a thin layer before installing the retainer, as my seal did not have the ears. The job is dirty and a royal pain but not really all that hard and can be done in 4-8 hours depending on your skill level. FEL-PRO gaskets for sure!!! Oh, and great video!

One other thing, it may already be mentioned here but if possible take your Jeep for a drive the night before then drain the oil and let it drain overnight, it will massively cut down on oil dripping on you while you are under the car with the pan off.

nice job with this video --that will be handy for a lot of folks one thing I learned on my FJ and im not sure if jeeps do this but make sure the lip surface of the pan is nice and flat and not convex or concave --if so you can hammer it flat (gently) with a body hammer or mallet and a flat bar. this might not be necessary with that lube locker gasket but just in case. I wouldnt do this on the curve front and rear parts just along the sides

Wow! Now I know why my mechanic said that would be a monster of a job and likely not worth it on my 1999 Jeep Cherokee sport which is all pretty rusted underneath. I give you a lot of credit. Looks like a lot of very hard work.

It's hard to imagine these seals not leaking when brand new or perfectly installed.... it's just two pieces don't make sense to me but it's cool you ain't gotta pull the trans... very nice video

So the dent on the passenger side of the pan rail is extremely common. The passenger side upper control arm bolt will actually contact the pan at full bump.

Good stuff man. Fair warning, there is a whole additional struggle to do this with the front axle on. I had to remove the steering dampner, the front shock lower connections, the bell housing front cover and pop the exhaust loose. Then I had to jack the axle up about 3/4" because it swings backwards as it lowers. After all that I was able to pop the pan down with minimal leverage but anyone thinking about doing this, be forewarned, the axle is a problem child.

I’ve done a rear main on an AMC V-8 and it’s pretty much the same deal. One thing I did differently was smeared a tiny bit of soap on the top half of the seal. It lubes it up so it feeds easily around the crank.
