In this video I look at a Seiko 6309 watch movement that has been sent into me with a stuck date wheel problem to fix. I disassemble and explore the works to find the problem and then what to do to fix this issue. This was a very off the cuff video that I shot because I thought it might be useful for someone out there as a reference if they have the same issue with their own watch.

Mike - One technique I have learned for removing those C rings on the day wheel especially with the flat side is down is to take a small screw driver and fit it in the open c ring gap. Twist slightly and this will open up the c ring enough to allow it to lift up and off the pinion. I believe this technique is outlined in some of the Seiko Tech Guides.

Thanks, Mike I'm just about to take my old 1984 Seiko 5 with the 6309 movement about as i have the same issue not changing at 12. Mine turned out to be the tiny plastic toothed wheel between the hour wheel and the plastic day change wheel. Now working fine.

I'm thinking of doing this to my 6109 which has a slightly wacky day date in you set the day by whizzing the hands round and you set the date by the crown pusher which on later Seiko's the crown pusher is done for the day and the date is set by moving crown to first click. However I do have a perfectly if date functionless working 6109 and the old adage of not fixing it til its actually broke comes to mind and just continue wearing it as a quite nice time teller :D

The date change finger is probably worn, or bent, or the spring may be broken. Tip, it’s never 👎 advisable to change the day/date between the times of 10:30 pm, and 2:30 am (some watches, this can take up to 5:00 am for the day/date cycle change to be complete). This can damage the day/date change mechanism. Your friend, Jeff.

Great video. I have a 6349 movement with a day wheel that seems to get stuck half way between days. There seems to be no physical damage that I can see. The days and date both change fine when I set them via the crown in the 1st pulled position, however with the watch running normally or when I adjust the time advanced past midnight, the date changes fine, but the day moves and gets stuck half way. I’m contemplating purchasing a new day wheel as I see no issue with the gears. Although the day wheel spring feels extremely flimsy. Perhaps it has weakened and it’s allowing the day wheel to “click” into the next day. More troubleshooting to come.

carlos carvalhido yes a few people have said that about Vostok. As for the date it lines up fine. cant really advise that much. The keyless works where the crown fits in controls all the quickset, the normal operation has a different set of mechanics. To diagnose the hands and dial would need to be removed to see what could be causing the problem.

@@glennpowell3444 to my knowledge quickset is always a different mechanism to the the normal time date change at 12. As for the old date wheel. I could notice one tooth that was bent slightly downwards which probably was causing the main jam. All damage would have been caused by someone trying to turn the crown hard to get the quickset to work. the Date ring is very thin metal whereas the star gear that turns it on quickset it solid stainless steel. WatchYouTech well quickset is driven by turning the crown. I’d have to look at the service manual for the NH but it will be driven by a gear that perhaps is either missing or fitted the wrong way. if the date disc is not changing on either normal midnight or quickset then its probably not fitted properly . if its only quickset then the issue will be in the keyless works. something will be out of position.

@@MyRetroWatches Thanks Mike. I got it. Thanks to this video I fixed it just now.. The only thing bothering me now is it has stopped winding. I figured that even if the oscillating weight is rotating smoothly, the 1st reduction wheel also rotates but the pawlers are not grabbing enough the teeth of the 2nd reduction wheel that's why it's not winding. However, if I remove the oscillating weight and manually turn the 1st reduction wheel, the pawlers are grabbing the 2nd reduct wheel's teeth and is therefore winding the barrel.

it turns out to from a Vostok movement retainer. No place to be in a Seiko.

I gave a citizen divers and the date has stopped changing automatically but it will change manually 🤔

Both controls are done differently. So the quickset is a completely different mechanism to the time change day date. On this watch the plastic parts are what change at 12 . So for your watch for it not to change in normal time operation would suggest there is something our of alignment / broken with that part of the mechanism.

That's not the correct movement ring for that watch.

PJB Bullock the whole watch is a mosh mash of parts. I think the ring is right for the case. The turtle for example as the same one. The one in the video it had been installed the wrong way up as far as I can tell.

@@MyRetroWatches I've just checked my 6309 divers parts draw and I was partly right, it's not correct. Yours is missing a piece. Thats probably why the extra piece of wire was in. As you say, a hodgepodge.
