My new channel! John Sucks at Video Games! / @johnandmichelle
In this video we will show one of the ways to fix the humming sound on a Bally Midway MCR arcade game. In this video we will be working on a TRON but what is shown applies to most MCR games like Tapper, Domino Man, Kickman, Kick, Discs of Tron, etc
Keep in mind, your hum could be caused by other things such as audio amp, fluorescent light fixtures and ballasts, power supply, ground, etc. I checked all of these things FIRST and before I changed the filter caps as shown.

Just a little reminder on those old capacitors. The silver one that was made in the 1970's through mid 80's. The one that was swollen in your video. They have a jelly like fluid in them called PCB. It is a super hazardous material PCB stands for polychlorinated biphenyl. It is a cancer causing agent that can transfered by getting it on your skin. I work on AC units that use the same type old capcitors. People at metal scrap yards were catching cancer at a alarming rate because these things were being chipped with other metal and the residue of PCB was coating other metals and being transfered to work gloves by the workers. It's some bad stuff. Remember not to break one open or puncture those old PCB capacitors. Companies made PCB liquid gel to surround the internal storage in the cap because the internal temp can get up to 800 degrees to store that much energy and the gel didn't let that heat transfer to the outside of the enclosed shell. New cap's do not have PCB in them, it has been illegal to produce PCB for a long long time. Just be careful because the outside of those old cap are sometime paper thin from age and the swelling is because of heat tranfer to the weakest point usually the top between the contact points.

+Ernest “Titanfan2k1” B interesting. How do you get rid of them?

+ILordSpawnI Well I live in Nashville and we have a HHW (Household Hazardous Waste) Facility that take these free of charge. They put all of them in a 55 gal. drum and ship them off to a Special HazMat Waste Processor. PCB are also in the old flourecent ballast people dispose of there also. Just call your local or state gov. and ask what to do about recycling your Capacitors or Flourecent Ballasts. All major cities either have a HHW program or a HHW drop off event. I'm not an enviromentlist in any way but please don't just throw away these things in the trash or drop them off for scrap metal. Hope this helps.

No, those capacitors don't contain PCB oil, those are paste electrolytic capacitors and the electrolyte while somewhat corrosive to metal is not particularly harmful stuff and needs no special disposal considerations. PCB oil was used in some types of capacitors up into the mid 70s, but only high voltage oil filled types, not anything you'd find in an arcade game. Also there is a huge amount of hype surrounding PCBs, the oil is not particularly hazardous to handle but it is extremely inert meaning it does not break down over time. If you dump something with PCB oil in a landfill it will eventually leak out and wind up in the water supply, that is the reason it should be disposed of properly. Utility transformers were once filled with tens of gallons of the stuff, it was nice in that it is a good insulator and non-flammable but it's too easy for it to end up in the environment where it never really goes away.

I paused the video to get a look at the markings on that blue cap that you weren't sure if it was original. It's a Mallory CGS, which surprisingly still has a datasheet posted online and appears to still be made/sold. The name of the company has changed to Cornell-Dubilier for whatever reason. I don't know how Mallory does/did their markings on their caps, but I noticed one of the markings says 0175. It's a bit surprising but still possible that a cap from 1975 ended up in this game when it was built. Another code says 235-8231K. The "8231" in there could also be a date code (week 31 of 1982). That one actually seems the most likely. If either of those are actually date codes then this cap must have been original to the game. But like I said, I don't know their marking format, so I'm speculating on the meaning.

Ewww! And old PCB capacitor from the 70s. The crap inside them is toxic and is known to cause cancer. Good that the bulged one didn't burst. Old caps like this could go paper thin. So be careful when handling such kinds of caps the future 'cause the crap inside is nothing you want on your skin or in your cabinet... Looking forward to your "Tron: one hour million" video attempt aka "John sucks at Tron" :) Keep the videos coming.

I've written to you before about the Strong Museum of Play in Rochester and would love to know when you come. Because it's a museum, there are games that are not even on the floor due to there content (Gun games, hot chicks on games, etc) but they're in the building and can be used for research. I know the guy that runs it and he would love to have you there. It's only about a 6 hour trip. There's also a new barcade opening in DT Rochester in the next few weeks which could also be a cool stop. Let me know if you ever decide and we can set something up!

+Anthony Conte Funny you mention there is one similar in Pittsburgh, PA. It's called the pennsylvania coin operated gaming hall of fame & museum and they have over 400 arcade and pinballs. Look 'em up. They got some rare stuff there from what I've read about this place. Timeline Arcade in Hanover, PA is another great arcade worth checking out. Fortunately its a 4 and a half hour drive from where I am :( Would be worth a drive though.

As for the reason why you got 0 volt readings from the original caps: from the Tron manual schematics, it appears that the caps have bleeder resistors which discharges the capacitors when the power is off (from looking at page 105.) www.arcade-museum.com/manuals-videogames/T/Tron.pdf

john I think that was a 120 Mhz hum, which is indicative of a bad filter cap, while a 60 Mhz hum is not. also, did the hum change when you adjusted the volume? im guessing not.
