HOW TO FIX BROKEN RV SLIDE-OUT CABLE | RV REPAIR | FULL-TIME RV LIFE

🛠 Owning an RV means learning how to FIX an RV. Good thing Victoria loves problem solving and her tools, because we’ve got a video this week on how to fix a broken RV slide on your own!
PROBLEM: This unfortunately, is our biggest RV repair yet. After hearing some strange noises as we started extending our living room slide out, we heard a LOUD pop. Didn’t take long to figure out one of the RV slide-out cables had completely snapped. To make matters worse the frayed cable had also gotten jammed in the gear system.
REPAIR: To have an RV repair company come out to assess the problem would have cost $300. That is before the repair cost. So Victoria has step-by-step instructions on how to replace an RV slide-out cable on your own. Including where to find replacement cable, what tools you'll need and how to go about replacing the cable. The best part is we saved ourselves hundreds of dollars by doing it ourselves!

BAL wire slides take maintenance. Always keep a generic cable kit and a gearbox on the road with you. If you do the gearbox always mark where the chains were on the gear.

I have this exact camper and have had nothing but problems with that top cable. Mine broke even worse than yours. Lucky for me it was still under warranty that time. They had to pull the wall apart to get the cable out. They re timed it and it continues to need re tighting and timing. I will run for anything with a bal accu slide in the future. This is my 4th camper and is by far the most problematic. We've replaced the microwave, fridge and front jacks the front window was also mis installed. All in all not great

We don’t have a previous RV comparison to go off of but we would have to agree with you about it being problematic 👍

Thanks for sharing this video. Yesterday I was prepping the 25 foot Wildwood with a 12foot slide and I heard this loud bang pop, bang pop. The side then dropped to about a 30 degree angle as it was about 90% out. Then nothing happened when I hit the switch. Hum.... I proceeded to pull the top trim boards to reveal the motor mounting screws had all snapped and the motor was laying up there.... I made a couple of calls to the RV dealers and we are out of warranty and it would be days if not longer for them to fix it. .....Hum I can fix that. I removed the rest of the top trim board the length of the slide and found everything fixable. I replaced the 6 mounting screws that mounted the motor and gear box and moved it about a 1/8" over for new hole locations. Used self tapping hex bolts but I drilled a pilot hole even though they were self tapping. I used two jacks to level the slide out and propped them with 4x4's. The fun part was hooking up all the chains and pretension cables. The tension adjustments work great once you read the instructions on the decal on the wall. If you don't have a decal get that information from the Acuslide BAL site. With out it you will be very confused and waste a lot of time. I did go to Lowes for 2 deep socket 10 mll and 12 mill and my ratcheting wrenches worked very nicely while I was trying to figure out the tensioning procedure. Then after readying the instructions it wasn't 10 minutes before I had it adjusted. 6 hours later I had went from a tear in my eye and my Wife crying to watching youtube videos and going thank you Jesus for your help.

Yeah it’s kind of a helpless feeling when something like a slide breaks but WOW that is impressive you figured it out and got everything fixed that quickly! I’m sure your info will help others down the road and we appreciate you sharing it! 🙏

Excellent video. I have been avoiding cable operated slides like the plague. I also don't care for the enclosed rams- preferring the exposed ones which push the slide out on the bottom. Once the slide is out I used supports to keep the slide out from bending outside. I also place a 2x2 under the slide (as we close it) in our kitchen to prevent it from traveling up and down as we moved down the road and to prevent tweaking the gear box. Thank you for posting this.

I used to have the exact same Kodiak. Finally got rid of it after that same slide cable broke the 6th time! It was horrible!

Shes a great mechanic. Nurses are amazing and can do many things. Who wears the pants anyways?

😂 Victoria really likes to be good at everything. She really dislikes not being good at something. In those situations I just try to stay out of the way and let her figure new things out. It’s better for everyone that way, trust me 😆 Also, I got no problem with my wife wearing pants

When your cable completely snapped how to get the slide to come back in? Is there a manual way to get the slide in?

The slide broke as we were putting it out so it was about halfway out and we propped it up from the outside with a jack and some blocks until we were able to replace the cable
