How To Fix, Cut and Flare Car Brake Lines

Here is how to fix your car brake lines if they are leaky. If you want to replace part of a metal car brake line, you could cut out the bad part, and then cut a piece of new brake line into the right size, and cut and flare it so that you can attach it to the old brake line with a nut. Cutting and flaring brake lines is easy to do, and it is cheap to buy a brake line cutting and flaring kit. Before you actually work on your car and cut and flare new brake lines to put into your car, make sure you practice until you are good at it. Buy a good quality brake line double flaring kit, and some good quality brake lines and practice five or six times, and then go under car and splice in a new piece of brake line. Don't use too much torque when you install it. Torque it down tight, and then check to see if it leaks, and tighten it more if it does.

Very good, except if you bleed the brake system prior to tightening your fittings you risk sucking air into the system. The system should be bled AFTER any leaks are identified and corrected.

When you face OEM steel that is hard as hell....the flare tool has an annoying tendency to fail.

a long time ago i noticed brake fluid under my old truck and looked under it. someone had run a gas line from a t to my brake line.. i still wonder what would have happened had i not seen the brake fluid under it. Since that day I still to this day look under before i start any car or truck.

im.glad you said that..i hit the freaking brake line in 2 places with a grinder because i was so pist at the di** i baught my truck from. was going to splice in both places but after you said better off replacing the whole line I looked over at my parts truck and i have the lines rite here. i know it woud probably have leaked if i splced into the lines.

Lost my fairly expensive line flaring kit. Looks like I'll be replacing it with a fairly cheap Chinese one that may, or may not, work as well.

Thanks. How did you get that huge flare tool onto the car portion and do it on car. Space seems so tight, like what I have.

I don’t remember. There wasn’t much room to work down there. I think I cut it in a place where there was enough room to get the tool in.

Mister Ambassador Did the job with local auto-chain rental flare tool. Made the seriously curved short section off car and the mates on car and luckily first ever attempt it worked. Tried 2 more times hoping it would be even better and both failed. Go figure!. I will re-check the video for future reference. Thank you

Hey hoohoohoblin thanks for posting this helped me tons with my front line replacement project (fukn MIchigan ROtt roads) I was wondering hoohoohoblin, You ever have a rough time reconnecting to a drum cylinder? I am friggin stugglin too get it to line up or something it is a rear drum, on a jeep. I take the cylinder off and it connects right up, Tuck it all under the pads pulls springs. Get break job all back together.. friggin thing WILL NOT catch on the first threads. (Pretty Mechanically inclined,I Turned wrenches for the US Navy for 12 years). Any thoughts would be VERY VERY grateful. ~Thanks for your time.

You might have the wrong threaded connector on the end of the brake line. Some of them have more friends than others. I know that’s happened to me before. Look at the original one and look at the one you’re using to replace it, and see if they have the same number of threads and same depth.

they make a copper coupler for air lines on trucks that you just slide on the line with a flair ring that slides on them you just tighten the nut on to the fitting and will crunch the flair ring tight to the line. forget what the proper term is for them but very simple and quick and in most cases don't even have to take the line off

Gonna be honest, the homemade one doesn't look like a double-flare, either. I'm no expert, but it looks to me like the die didn't work correctly, and he ended up with a single flare.

To clarify: A single-flare is basically just taking the end of the line and opening it up at a 45° angle. Those are fine for low-pressure systems where leaking isn't a major concern, but not for brake lines. A bubble-flare starts out that way, but then bends the flare back in at the opposite angle to form a little chamber. A double-flare is similar, but the second bend is nearly 180°, folding the lip back in to near the center of the line.

i swear everyone is doing this wrong. See how you made a cone because you cranked it down so hard with the cone! The one in your left hand had a niopple shape to it that fits down inside a conical receiver be it flexi pipe, a union, a compensator or a female connector. What i believe you made was a brake line end for a female connector that would couple well directly with the fitting you had in your left hand when used with a female brake line nut with an internal thread. I'm just here after scanning 10 similar videos but still can't find the exact answer as to how to make a female end and hopw to make a male end to a brake line.

Do you mean a double flare to a flare? I know this comment is 2yrs old so I'm assuming you're sorted but curious as to what you did :)

@@godfatherdon3392 I managed in the end but it took some practice to find the best way to make a strong and thick connection. Trying to remember what I did now, I believe I used the tool with and without the die, it took at least 2 stages with some messing around on practice pieces to get it to work correctly. I left some comments in some other videos explaining how I did it but not sure if I can find them now.

@@godfatherdon3392 The other thing to note was that the copper coating on the pi[pe was sup[er thin and started rusting so I sanded it back lightly and lacquered everything with a spray lacquer. painting it on would probably;y be better, it's that cheap stuff from Asia. same way you can't keep cheap mig wire in a damp place.

@@izzzzzz6 Hey bud, really appreciate the reply. If it was two stages, it sounds like you did double flares (Which can be difficult to get right so well done!) I just spliced and repaired an 11 inch section of brake line on my own car yesterday using double flares and they worked a treat. I got 3metres of brake pipe, a pipe cutter, bending tool and flare/double flare tool with 6 dies and 10 male/10 female conmections for £29.99. I was quoted £170 to repair the brake line so I'm pretty happy. It went through the M.O.T. this morning and brake test went very well. Normally I work on my own car to do repairs but steer clear of brake lines. Figured I had nothing to lose by trying it myself by practicing my double flares to get the technique nailed down before I went near the car.

you didnt get the double flare. the technique was correct but something went wrong as you didnt get the line to bubble down for the first flare

Steel often overwhelms the clamp mechanism of the tool. OEM steel especially. It’s very hard to find a good set for on-vehicle flaring

I agree...that on you left you have a male connector and you made a female connector and that is what you hold in you right hand. So this clip i suggest is not totally correct. You need a male to replace the calipter connect and you ned bouth when you makes an extention or connecting a line. Not sure what you call it in english... but when connecting two end of the pipe/ line....you need male and female. Also...it is not easy to work with oem steel lines...but copper goes well and ok. The problem is ...that cars uses steel oem...and it rust and it is hard to work nipples on. Good luck ! :-)

You did not make a double flare. A single flare will eventually crack. Also, not to confuse your viewers .. the brake line in your left hand has a "Metric" flare.

Haha the reason yours was flatter was because it was a different flare type. The one you made was supposed to be an SAE double flare, but looks like you did it wrong and it somehow ended up with a single flare, which you can't use for brake lines, unless it's an AN 37 degree flare with steel lines. Also, the original flare you compared to was an ISO metric bubble flare.

Also, the flare type matters for the fittings you're using. If your factory lines use bubble flares, stick to that.

If you know how long the entire break line is, then you can buy one at the store and bend it to fit, and it will already have the fittings on the ends.
