How to fix headphone jack or charging ports... with a toothpick?
Do you have a headphone jack that is not working? Is your charging port not... charging any more? In this video, I show you an easy technique which can fix some common problems with connecting your headphones and data or charging cables.
The method is simple - to remove the lint, dust, dirt and other "crud", simply gently (very gently!) scrape the inside of the port with a toothpick. This will remove the bits of lint and other objects which are in your port and could be causing issues with the connection and make your headphones and charging ports not work.
This is not a guaranteed solution, but I have found it works a significant amount of time and at worst you have clean ports and can remove this as a potential cause of any issues.

Thank you mate ! It helped a lot. My headphone plug was being pushed out very easily with the slightest movement ! I thought I had to buy a new jack and open the phone and maybe risking damaging it ! I wish you find 200U$ on the floor this week ! You deserve it !

Would it be ok to cover up the holes every time u put it in ur pocket? It’ll save the holes from the lint and save time for cleaning.....

Yes. In fact there are some cases that actually have flaps which cover the sockets for this exact reason.

Pete, have you experienced this or heard of it before? I use my iPad and GarageBand to play backup music (drums, bass horns etc.) for my 2 piece band. I plug a 3.5mm cord into the iPad headphone jack and the other end of the cord plugs into my PA system into one of the channels. I play my GarageBand song, turn up the volume on the PA channel and we’re good to go playing along with the GarageBand song. Lately we’ll be in the middle of the song and a bunch of loud static and distortion starts blasting through. It happens randomly and on different songs. I’ve eliminated the PA channel as the problem, tried plugging a different cord into the headphone jack and it still happens but not all the time. Do you think it could be a dirty or defective iPad headphone jack? I tried using the lightening port with an adapter and that seems to work fine. By the way, thanks for all you do to help us.

Hey there. Yes, this sounds like it may be some connections that are not quite, well, connecting properly. A clean out can help make sure the pins are lining up but the socket itself may have worn over time, especially after regular plugging and unplugging. Belkin make an adapter that give you a headphone jack and li go thing charger port which may be an option to keep it working and charged? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/grOUlcSTvr-4o6c.html

Oh wow...I cant believe it actually worked! I was listening to music offline and my google assistant kept activating and turning off the music so I figured it was just my old headphones so I bought new ones and the problem got worse. I tried this when I got home and the problem stopped immediately! I ended up with a ton of lint lol

Hello I need help, if you could help me, I would really be thankful So a few days ago my headphone with chord was working well with my phone. Then suddenly it wouldnt put the audio in the earphones. So I wondered maybe I got the earphones broken. So when I plugged in the earphones in my laptop, it's working perfectly. Okay maybe I thought the port must be broken, so I tried plugging in speakers with chord in my phone and it worked perfectly. So maybe I accidentally clicked something that will not make the audio output in the earphones i really dont know.

Hey Pete, I have a Xiaomi POCO X3. I was caught in an ugly storm two weeks ago and some water made its way into the jack port.. A few nights after that the jack worked just fine but after a couple of days, my phone stopped recognising the headphones. Is there anything I can do to fix it on my own? I tried the toothpick methode but the port is clean.. So I'm guessing it's damage from the rain..

So… you can try the dry rice method. Look it up online. I’ve used it successfully a few times, though the manufacturers don’t recommend it.

This wasn't my problem. It's the port definitely but not a cleaning issue. It's more like it's becoming disconnected. Video keeps stopping from the barest movement and sound is automatically lowered. Yeah. They’re common issues of a plug that’s not connecting. If it’s not crud in the port you might have some sc to Al damage and need a professional.

Yeah. I have a case on one of my phones and I gay actually covers the ports. It’s good but makes it less handy to plug things in and out.

Lmao i was watching this and theres no lint in the port but i used a sewing pin to pok around on the side where the headphones work. And i think i just pulled it back into place.

I have been successful with the use of one of those little spiral interdental brushes. They’re like little dust brooms that grab the dust. Turn OFF the phone completely, insert the brush, and turn it in the direction that pulls out the dust. Works great in the headphone jack and the Lightning port. No digging around; just insert and twist. Only the center core is metal-but so is the tip of a headphone plug-and there is no chance of shorting anything, as all of the contacts are on the sides of the port (on my iDevices, anyway), and the phone is turned off.
