LIVE FIX: Watt's up with Intel 12, 13 and 14 gen CPUs crashing games, getting hot and failing early?
Featured motherboards: MSI, Gigabyte, ASUS and AsRock
Articles: www.anandtech.com/show/13544/...
On modern Intel processors, PL1 defines the lower limit of power consumption (watts), which applies when the CPU is under low load. PL2 is the higher limit, which applies when the CPU is under heavy load and is temporarily boosted (overclocked).
PL1 is the effective long-term expected steady state power consumption of a processor. For all intents and purposes, the PL1 is usually defined as the TDP of a processor. So if the TDP is 80W, then PL1 is 80W.
PL2 is the short-term maximum power draw for a processor. This number is higher than PL1, and the processor goes into this state when a workload is applied, allowing the processor to use its turbo modes up to the maximum PL2 value. This means that if Intel has defined a processor with a series of turbo modes, they will only work when PL2 is the driving variable for maximum power consumption. Turbo does not work in PL1 mode.
Tau is a timing variable. It dictates how long a processor should stay in PL2 mode before hitting a PL1 mode. Note that Tau is not dependent on power consumption, nor is it dependent on the temperature of the processor (it is expected that if the processor hits a thermal limit, then a different set of super low voltage/frequency values are used and PL1/PL2 is discarded).

Had computers for 35 years, first one was an Atari 1040 ST ,built pc's for a long time. Built a new pc with a 7600x and a 7900xt last year. After 3 months of flawless operation I had continually AMD GPU driver error messages. Pc ran fine without a GPU , reinstalled windows,latest bios version. Tested everything,cpu was faulty,probably the chiplet with the pcie complex had gone bad. Got another one. Still works fine,but I don't touch pbo any more because my former chip did 5.6 easy out of itself with pbo,but at what cost, even with a beefy cooler. Then the gpu went bad. In cyberpunk , my hot spot temps were around 105 °c,normal temp around 60-70. I suspect the cooler not being mounted correctly and sag. Had an anti sag bracket under it, but it died before I could even think about repasting or rma ing it. 2 AMD products died on me in less than 6 months Got both cpu and GPU new,and they work as intended now. I have had both AMD and Intel and never have I seen this happen.

Strange, I remember that AMD, after the burning of the sockets with the Ryzen 7000 series, that they ordered the motherboard manufacturers to use the given specs from them.

FYI...on my Asus Z790 ProArt MB with a 13700k,in the bios ,under Ai Tweaker,the Asus Performance Enhancement 3.0 is worded differently than your MB.Its listed as Asus Multicore Enhancement....I changed from "Auto-Lets Bios Optimize" to "Disabled-Enforce All limits".Now everything is set to Intels limits.My PC never ran too hot with Cinebench,but its cooler now and im more comfortable running the Intel limits.

Excellent video Carey. I checked my older ASUS TUF Gaming Z590-PLUS WIFI motherboard with an i7-11700K. According to Hardware Info it was set to PL1=4095.9 and PL2=4095.9!!! Thanks to your video I was able to set these values to their proper levels (125 and 229, respectively). I'm not a gamer and probably don't stress the CPU much but it's still nice to know that I now have these limits set to their proper values. Thanks again.

Most OC guides back then use 4095.9 W (which means no limit) for PL1/PL2 so the CPU can draw as much power as it needs. My 8700k works perfectly fine for 5 years of usage OC'd to 4.8Ghz Core/ 4.5Ghz Ring before I side upgrade to 10900k. The consensus was high voltage setting was mostly the thing degrading CPUs. I think it was 1.35v and below was safe daily usage for 8-11 gen? Another thing was VCCSA and VCCIO for the memory controller. Auto OC is very dangerous because most motherboard uses extreme values. I think it is mostly an issue for 13/14 gen and 12 gen didn't have that issue. If you don't OC then running intel stock settings is probably the best.

I have i7 - 13700k and after updating the BIOS on my ASUS motherboard, the CPU stayed cool enough and haven't had any issues since. The temps seem to cap in games around 80 degrees and no more crashes. I updated my BIOS around the end of 2023.

Time to come back for Intel to come back in motherboard manufacturing. I'd to see that happening! These MoBo manufacturing companies are crooks from Taiwan! I dont want to begin discussing their customer service ! I built core i7 2nd gen for my freind's store with Intel Mobo that damm thing runs 24x7 and still refuse to die.. thats a prime example of Toyota Computer !

@@aolish there are a number of intel power profiles (specs) in their datasheets. which they assign to different sku's and different power profiles within those sku's. the power limits are in your hands. lower them (below 219) to what suits your thermals. is my suggestion. there are also current settings that act as another limiter on power draw, also within the spec sheets. the extreme profile for a 13900k from memory is 320A (not watts) Amps. some other techtoobers set this current limit to 400A which they can get away with on typical high binned chips in the 13900k/ks sku

This situation and lack of disclosure by mobo makers must be really dangerous for someone who uses throttle limiting software like ThrottleStop. Not knowing that mobo is feeding excessive voltage to the CPU and using software to disable or limit CPU's safety guards, that is throttling. This combination can probably burn a CPU real fast.

All I CAN do is share. My Gigabyte Z790 Aorus Elite has always set my VCCSA voltage too high. I remember VCCSA was blamed for killing 9900K CPUs. XMP 7200 sets mine to 1.42V. I lowered mine down to 1.15 V after every bios update. DX12 out of memory errors have always been Memory stability issues. BF 2042 was plague with the issue because it was sensitive to memory overclocks. Fortnite same DX12 Crap. Severs running stock memory speeds but what's the stock VCCSA Voltage? Too high VCCSA Voltage will degrade the chip pretty quick. Also @ 1:55.50 your running 2133 with a VCCSA Voltage of 0.895 which is correct. X.M.P on ddr5 is running 1.4 and Higher which is a NO NO Obviously. 1.15 for 7200 and NEVER above 1.25 for 24/7 use IMO.
@jameyt1
@jameyt1 14 күн бұрын
yes, 9th and 10th gen intel chips had huge problems with VCCSA overvolting out of the box with XMP enabled from multiple vendors, not just gigabyte. For XMP 7200, you only need around ~1.22v VCCSA for most intel chips and motherboards. DDR5 doesn't need as much SA voltage as DDR4. If you overclock/tune the memory further, you might need more SA voltage. 1.15v seems a little low for 7200mhz XMP, but as long as you properly stress test it with software like TM5, Karhu, or OCCT (large workload set), then it should suffice. VCCSA isn't the root cause of degradation here, that only applies to people running XMP. I doubt servers even bother with XMP. By the way, 1.25 VCCSA is not dangerous, nor is 1.35. It's when you go above 1.35v+ that it degrades the chip/IMC if pushed hard

I have the opposite problem with AMD - pc freezes after idle, because the cpu start running too slow. It was a easy fix with the 5600G just disable c-state in bios (B450) but the same problems happens with 7600X and the B650 doesnt have such feature in the bios settings so theres no fix for it. I dont have a clue if these problems are cpu or motherboard related, or maybe a combination of both...

@@MrSamadolfo They run just fine but can be unvolted if need be in order to run cooler and in a lot of cases even ran faster being undervolted. AMD tends to run hotter than intel but are also designed that way, so the upper limit temps you see with AMD will scare intel users and in most cases people think both platforms should run at the same degrees Celsius and that's not true.
