Hi, before tightening up the cover bolts, slip the pulley on the end of the crank...this will center the seal so that it wears evenly.

That’s not a bad idea. The straight edge does the same thing. The studs don’t allow much movement anyway but anything you do to keep the surface flat is helpful. Oil pan leaks are far more common than pulley leaks…so my primary concern is the oil pan surface. You should have seen The seal I removed in this video. It was completely trashed and flat on one side but never leaked a drop.

@@redeyecafegarage7484 I wish I could take credit but i learned it from someone who learned it from some else etc...my favorite trick is when installing diff covers, water pumps etc is to take two extra long bolts that fit in the holes in and cut the heads off and use them as guide studs...no more RTV mess or misaligned gaskets and everything lines up without having to hold with one hand while trying to start threads with the other..
