Of course, if you have a friend that can do it for you, it DOES cost a lot less. Negate the labor charges. And if you're savvy enough to do it yourself, even more than that. If you have the proper tools. A lot of people don't. They don't know what they need.

@@techymomof6873 it's a big challenge, I sale brand new electronics in Malawi. Imagine now that each time I have a New HP I have to carefully open it and slightly losen the hinges something I don't enjoy doing given a new computer, but still do just to prolong the hinges life span, especially when I am selling to university students I give them 4years warranty so it's a must to have the hinges issue prevented for me. I have also noted that lately even other brands like Lenovo, (Not ThinkPad) but the basic cheaper Lenovo it's a similar issue partly to do with the cheap plastic casings which can't withstand pressure.

Man, you're a fuxxing genius .... I fixed my pc with this method .... I don't know how much it will hold up because it was the first time I did it and maybe I could equip myself a little better even to better distribute the bicarbonate ...... but the result was crazy. .... when it dries it becomes almost duller than epoxy glue ..... I also softened the hinges a little to make them do less resistance and consequently less leverage on the repaired part .... THANKS for your sharing .....

Awesome Video , another tip, loosen the the hinges slightly . In my experience hinges are often too tight, which could be part of the issue in the first instance . About half a turn with a nut spinner ( M5/M5.5/M6 too hard with plyers ) each end of the hinges . Also Silicone grease or 3 in 1 oil helps

Indeed too tight! I'm fixing a laptop I had when I was younger and I remember the screw being so tight I couldn't unscrew it to replace the screen so I think I just tore the arm of the hinge off and then tore off the broke screen (god forbid I told my parents either)because I was like "better to be able to use it than close it" like no that's so impractical
@chrisgraham2904
@chrisgraham2904 Жыл бұрын
Yes, the hinge tension adjustment nut seems to automatically tighten with use as the screen in lifted and closed. Loosen the adjustment nut until the hinge moves smoothly, but will still support the screen in the open position. A drop of Locktite thread locking solution on the adjusted nut will prevent the nut from automatically tightening in the future. Very careful application of a lubricant will aid the hinge's movement and it can be applied to any areas that you don't want to be adhered by the crazy glue or epoxy that you use for the hinge attachment.

I've never heard of using baking soda with super glue. Very interesting! What I usually do is drill a hole in the bottom case, where each brass nut is broken loose, and run a small long bolt through the bottom. I put the original brass nut on first, tighten it down a bit, then the hinge on top of that, and another nut on top of the hinge.

Another tip is to put the metallic inserts on the tip of a hot soldering iron and drop them slowly on the plastic casing. The hot insert will sink in the casing as your detach the soldering iron with something a screw driver . You can continue to add super glue or form some plastic around the inserts.This is permanent

Thanks. This was very helpful. I was able to repair my partner's Lenovo laptop with the bad hinge design which tightens over time. The superglue and bicarb soda worked so well, it is amazing. Don't forget to adjust the hinge tension - some hinges get tighter as they age, which puts excessive force on the surrounding plastics. I also added a little lubrication to the hinge. I have tried cyanoacrylate to re-set hinge anchor points. But actually gorilla weld or jb weld has worked best, if you put the mix in a 20ml oral dispensing syringe after mixing, you can use micro-control to build up your anchor points after you have placed them. I usually use a mobile-fixable desk-mounted lighted magnifying glass and tweezers as well to get the fit and finish right. The one thing I noticed that you didn't do, was remove the circuit board away from the affected area and reinstall them later. I always remove the circuit boards so that in case I make a mistake, they won't be damaged or accidently glued in place in case another tech needs to work on it in the future for some other issue.

@@ElectronicsComputers update: Just finished repairing a laptop with broken hinges on both ends (5 patches total), wow! That patch is ROCK SOLID!!!! I used a kids tylenol seringe to spread the baking soda, i was initially pushing the end to make the powder come out but after a few patch i realized I could simply tap the syringe against the spot needing the patch and it was much more precise. I found it easier to do it in small layers (2-3 layers), but overall wow I am so satisfied with this method, i could screw in the screws super thight and it would not budge! 10/10 method Fun fact: The laptop I was repairing had a failed epoxy repair... lol Thanks again for taking the time to make this video!

Usen resina + pegamento, el combo que venden en ferreterías. Ese pega el plástico y para partirse hay que darle tremenda presión. Pega 10 veces más que un pegaloca o pegatodo, pero se requiere 24 horas para que pegue completamente.

I've used this trick for a lot of years, for my own laptop is fine, but for clients computers I just use 2 part epoxy. Harder to affix it in place, because it takes time to cure, but afterwards is near indestructible. One of my heavier media laptops has metal parts broken break apart after years of use, so no epoxy or superglue can help - there I just DRILLED TROUGH the laptop body, and put a steel plate on the other side. Looks ugly but it works. Because design allows for it to work. In newer slimmer laptops the plate and end of screws would cut into screen when fully closed.

J.B weld also works great!
@ElectronicsComputers
@ElectronicsComputers 2 ай бұрын
Yes, J.B. Weld is great stuff, but it's not perfect for that particular application. Cyanoacrylate has low viscosity, which allows it to get inside tiny cracks between plastic parts and the brass insert. On the other hand, J.B. Weld will only create a strong bond on the surface, leaving the inside structure compromised and likely to fail again in the future. For the past 15 years, we've had ZERO returns during the warranty period using cyanoacrylate and adhesive filler.

Great video, sad that hadn't thought about this one myself, but I have fixed some other things with this method and I must say that things that need some elasticity or have high/frequent stress are cracking this composite quite fast, like in a month or two. But overall that is so stupid that those high stress areas are so often made of cheap plastic that lasts just enough to get you through warranty period of the device. Like even my MSI laptop I bought 3 years ago for like 1900 euros started falling apart half a year ago, so I had to buy a new front panel for another 120 euros. Thats considering the fact that I was closing the laptop only once a week and it was mostly stationary device.
@ElectronicsComputers
@ElectronicsComputers Жыл бұрын
Sometimes, I think that laptop manufacturers deliberately make those areas weak. Lenovo, HP, and Asus have the weakest hinge mount area.
@_deathcry
@_deathcry Жыл бұрын
@@ElectronicsComputers Probably, and like they are certainly able to increase the durability of the mount area by making it bigger and having more than 3 screws, so that the applied stress would be distributed more and thus chassis last significantly longer, but those big companies probably don't need long lasting product, neither they care about E-Waste, because who would buy new laptops then...

Unfortunately, my plastic pieces that hold the little threads are completely off. They shattered and came off with the screws. Trying to glue the golden pieces directly to the plastic backing and keep them leveled without able to have the plastic holding them.
