That's not always the case. My laptop, Lenovo Ideapad 5 had a hinge issue. I used it for just 5 months. I was always very careful and opened the laptop only from the middle with both hands holding the bottom part in place, yet the hinge broke from the laptop and pushed the bezels out. This was a known issue with this laptop model. I got it fixed under warranty. They just designed it badly.

Wish I saw this before I brought my laptop to the repair shop and wasted 100 euro's, just for them to make it worse! The bezel of my laptop broke, so they used glue to glue it back up and charged me 100 euros for it, and then out of ''kindness'' loosened my laptop hinges. It ended up being so lose that just slightly tilting my laptop by picking it up, would make the screen fall back immediately and heavily! Then they ''fixed it'' free of charge, and ended up tightening it WAY too much even though I specified to only tighten it so it doesn't keep falling when I move. Now it physically feels very heavy to open back up now. I'm gonna try and find some good grease for hinges first and try this out myself, thanks for the video! Hope it works.

I believe those hinges are designed to self-tighten, since if they didn't, they would become loose after a while. Today I stumbled upon a hinge model that didn't have a way to adjust, on a Asus X401u. It came to me already with the case broken and lube didn't resolve the problem. But on laptops that weren't broken yet, your tutorial is spot on. Nowadays I advise people that if they have to pry open the lid with two hands, their laptop need a hinge adjustment ASAP, before the inevitable "crack!" sound is heard.

There is a 5mm hex on the end of hinge bolt. A tubular key for 5mm hex is much better than pliers as you observed. Unfortunatley usually the end is peened on the nut. So the nut can't untighten more. A trick is to tigten the nut (and this will free the nut in rotation) then untighten all the way you can and repeat a couple-a dozen of times. This will loosen the nut eventualy a bit. (basicly forcing the nut out will lightly unpean the end of the bolt). Also by tightening more you will squish the friction plates more maybe making them a bit thinner so when nut is undone to previous location it will loosen.

I bought a new Laptop base, but suddenly I started thinking why did my old case crack in the first place. When I observed the Hinges, they were too tight. awesome video, but with thinkpads or at least with the older models, it's kinda uncommon to hear any hinge problem with them, it's because the hinge mounts are usually molded to a big piece that mounted to a big surface of the body instead of using brass nuts that welded to fragile plastics. But only on higher end thinkpads tho, my brother's x240 do have a big piece of magnesium but my lower end e330 uses the brass mounts that recently broke off

I'm assuming this doesn't work with convertible laptops? The hinges on those have two mounting points. One to mounts the hinge to the chassis, and another to the screen. You can't loosen the latter because it's hidden in the screen panel. Only loosening the former is a recipe for disaster because you'll introduce even more imbalances.

Any thoughts on Asus after 1 year?

I don't have an Asus laptop. The ones that you see in my videos are just to play around with for a short while.

I think the manufacture has a better way to do this hinge. Most laptop will not last over 4 years, the hinges already stuck and break the screen.
