It is common for landscape lighting to stop working and usually a simple repair can bring yard lights back to life. In this video I show how to replace the poor connections at the LED flood light with a better longer term solution. If your low voltage yard lighting is not working do not throw your lights away before trying this fix.
Wire nuts: amzn.to/2u3NogE
Many low voltage yard lighting systems come with connections that make for original installation very simple. These connections often times pierce the main power wire which works immediately but can succumb to problems in a relatively short period of time. Corrosion can set in quickly making the connections fail. Even though it appears the light is no longer working replacing the low voltage light connection may prove the landscape lighting is working.

My question is that is only one light on the main wire to connect. What about the rest of the lights along the run beyond that light?

That was the last light, but what about when it's not the last light? How would you make a similar connection?

You would cut the main power wire in two pieces near where the light connects in. You need to splice the light wires as well as the two wires you just created (by cutting the one main power wire) all together. This allows power from the main power wire to travel to the light as well as down the rest of the power wire to other lights.

This was gold...Hopefully this is the fix for my Malibu lights . I am going to try this... I have 10 lights and the first two closest to the power source work and the others don't .. They have the exact connecting point you show... that you mention often fails. I think I should just fix one at a time ? or just do them all since you point out that kind of connection is cheap and goes bad anyway ?

Thanks. It might not be a bad idea to replace all the connections for your low voltage lights if you are able to. Best of luck with your landscape lighting repair.

The low voltage is also alternating current so it’s not necessary to keep in track of the polarity. I’m not a big fan of wire nuts or those factory connectors. It’s best to twist the copper wires together, heat them up using map gas, use solder, coat it twice with pvc cement or liquid electrical tape, heat shrink it, then cover it with two layers of plastic and tape.

Thanks for the low voltage lighting installation tips. I think this particular set of LED lighting fixtures had fixed wire polarity due to the nature of the LEDs and/or the LED driving electronics.

Hello there! This is the exact set up that I’m having issues with. Only a few of the lights are out. Now Is there a way to make sure that this is the issue before I replace the connectors?

If some of the lights are out I would guess it is very probable it is due to bad connection points somewhere. Sometimes though the lights themselves go bad, get damaged, etc.

I have two legs on an LED system. After a thunderstorm and particularly close and loud lightning strike. The whole system went out. The x-former shows a short. I was able to disconnect one leg and the other leg comes on. But when I reconnect the disconnected leg, it shorts the system. Is the problem in the cable or one of the fixtures?

Hard to say what your issue may be from this end but please share what you determine the culprit to be. Thanks

Well first I proved continuity through the main cable with a multimeter. Then I disconnected all of the lights on that leg. Manually powered on the X-former (it’s usually on a photo cell) then started connecting lights until the X-former tripped again and identified 2 lights that must have been damaged in the lighting strike.

Why did you cut the wire and then take off the connector thing why would you cut the main wire that makes no sense to me lol I don't think this video was well made it all it's hard to tell exactly what you're doing what you're cutting what was connected to the lights what was the main wire...

wire is cut to remove any potential corrosion in the wire itself near the splice ends
