This video demonstrates how to correct a make 1 (M1) increase that was done incorrectly several rows before. Also, how to add a M1 increase you forgot to do, several rows after it was supposed to have been placed. This video instructs how to correct both types of M1 incs (Elizabeth Zimmermann/EZ m1 incs and Raised M1 incs).
Jump directly to specific points in the video:
The two types of M1 incs (EZ and raised): 0:36
Fix an incorrectly made M1 inc: 2:21
Figuring out which ladder rung is supposed to be twisted: 3:33
Using the crochet hook to twist the strand: 3:57
Adding a forgotten M1 inc: 4:35
Putting the final st back on the ndl in the correct orientation: 8:00

The thing I love about you is that you know how to fix errors; and we are all going to make them. Thank you for recognizing this human factor. It makes me feel like I’m not the only one, I’m not stupid, and this error happens all the time. How normal! That’s what inspires me to keep knitting. And without the frustration…. it’s FUN! So, thank you for keeping us all knitting and enjoying. You totally rock🙏🧶❤️

I will be very surprised if I ever stop making errors in my knitting! It's so important to learn how to fix just the thing that was wrong, and not have to rip back sts that were knit perfectly fine the first time. I really does make knitting a lot more fun. :-)

You came in the nick of time. I miss place a m1r. Was able to correct my mistake by undoing those stitches and moving the m1r to its correct position. It was the twisting the stitch that caused me to pause and think I'll have to rip out the rows of stitching. With your instructions, I could correct that mistake in a matter of a few minutes. Thank you so much.

Okay so when I first found/subscribed to your channel like a month or so ago, I was for some reason under the impression you were a sock person. I didn't realize you're just a complete national knitting treasure. Your library is a mind-blowing, comprehensive, incredibly thorough resource. Not to mention you're articulate and brilliant -- such a mathematical mind. What did you do for a living before this? Anyway, finding this video is like two weeks too late to help me now, but I'm so glad it's here for my next m1 tragedy. Intense adulation aside, you have a lifelong fan in me, Roxanne.

Could you do a video on changing directions in knitting using the magic loop. I am knitting a Mohair Dickie, and the second part reads slip the next stitch to,the right hand needle, wrap the yarn to the back, and slip back onto the left hand needle. Turn your work inside out. We are changing directions of knitting...... I am having a lot of trouble doing this. Thank you. Jo-Ann

There is one fix I would love to see! It seems like it should be intuitive, but my brain gets all yarned up when I get back to it. On the previous row I should NOT have done a kfb, but I did. Twice. When I get back to it, how do I let one of the sts off? Thanks so much if you can show that!

Yes I have a question for a new video. Imagine you knit a pullover on the neckline will be a u-Boat neck with two left &2 right . Before u start that you need to create the shoulder/ Neckline . My pattern tells me at a certain length I need to hold the middle stitches (44) and knit only left and right each 28 stitches. Two rows in total and here is one issue knit two together at the end of the row . I have 27 s on each side. When starting knitting over all stitches I have to put on 2 stitches each side exactly there where I had purl stitches together. I get wholes. Please help. I’m able to provide a link for the pattern in English.

I knit a m1R into the slack between a backward-loop CO and existing stitch, but split the yarn, which looks terrible. The stitch above it is on the needle and is a knit stitch which was made on the next round. Could I drop down two rows to that slack and fix the m1R as in your method? The pattern is Emma, Coco Knits. I used that technique which is in the pattern on both sides of the backward-loop CO of each sleeve. The other three are perfect, and I'm so afraid of trying to fix the split stitch one as I would have to rip out two rows which would open up an opportunity to make other mistakes--and I definitely don't want to do that!

Very clear and will be helpful! I’d like to know how to “read” my knitting to determine which M1 increase I last did. Unless I say “left” or “right” out loud I don’t remember! saw a hint of how in this video which I will review.

Look at the angle of the increase twist in the fabric. If it looks like \ then it was a m1L. If it looks like /, then it was a m1R.

I am so grateful for this video since I am working on a garment with M1R and M1L increases that I have found an error in and need to drop back to fix. My garment is garter, not stockinette, so my question is how to be sure I am picking up the garter stitches correctly once I fix the twist of the M1 that I need to fix. Do I start my first rung pickup after fixing the twist as though I am working a "purl" - that is, when I work garter and have to drop down, I notice the rungs alternate between being in front and in back of the fabric and I think that the next rung down from the dropped stitch is in front and the one beneath that is in back, and so on. I am just trying to envision how I created the M1 in garter so I know how to proceed to pick up the rungs (from which direction) when I go to fix the entire assemblage in the column I dropped down to fix the errant M1. Any extra thoughts about this?
@RoxanneRichardson
@RoxanneRichardson 6 жыл бұрын
First, make sure the face of the fabric facing you is the one that faced you when you originally worked the increase. You know, then, that you created the m1 on a row that was knit. If you used the lifted m1 version, you will pull the ladder through the twisted loop as a knit. If you used the backwards loop version, you will pull the loop through as a purl (because it wouldn't have been worked until the following row).

Is it possible to make an update to this excellent video regarding how to fix a dropped left lifted increase and right lifted increase? Or is it inherent in this video and maybe I don't recognize it?
@RoxanneRichardson
@RoxanneRichardson 7 жыл бұрын
Lifted increases are done differently than m1 incs. For any dropped inc, whether it's a m1, yo, lifted, or kfb, the trick is in figuring out where the inc originated, and understanding how it was initially created. M1 and YO incs are similar, in that they are created from a running thread. Lifted incs and kfb incs are created within an existing st, so you have to insert the hook through the leg of a stitch in a specific way, when you're pulling that first ladder rung through. It's a good suggestion for a video! Thanks!
@lfong4564
@lfong4564 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks. This is really helpful! What if there's a M1 increase in every RS row? Does that change how I fix the M1? OR Do I make a twisted loop for every row?
@RoxanneRichardson
@RoxanneRichardson 6 жыл бұрын
The twisted loop will be at the base of a column of sts that will otherwise be normal. So you won't have a column of sts made of only twisted loops. Each twisted loop creates a new column that grows out of it.

Hi could you do a video on how to drop down and knit a missed increase of knit 4 stitches ,which is k1 ,ktbl.k1,ktbl increase
@RoxanneRichardson
@RoxanneRichardson Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, if you skipped an increase that turns 1 stitch into 4, there won't be enough slack in the available yarn to create the missing sts.
@joanarnold82
@joanarnold82 5 жыл бұрын
I've got a quandry: if I've spotted where in the pattern that I missed an increaase, but that spot is 40 or so stitches away, do I work the pattern to that point, fix the missed increase, and then increase again, since the increase is in the same location? OR slip the stitches to the spot, fix the increase, and then work back to the working yarn to continue with the pattern?
@RoxanneRichardson
@RoxanneRichardson 5 жыл бұрын
I would probably mark the location with a locking stitch marker, as a reminder to myself when I get to that point that I have to do something BESIDES the new increase (because I might forget to do it, otherwise. I don't see any advantage to slipping sts, fixing the missed inc, then slipping back in order to go forward from there, but that doesn't mean you wouldn't see an advantage. Both approaches work, so do the one that works best for you.

This is utterly confusing to me, sorry. I have to add M1 K1 M1 four times per every knit row, spaced evenly across the row. Three of the four increase sections look good, but one looks terrible. I must have been careless and didn’t realize it until too late. I’m thinking I have to start all over again because I haven’t been able to find a video that will help when the increases are M1 K1 M1. Any advice?
