HOW TO FIX & REPAIR BENT SNOWBLOWER AUGER HOUSING SKID SHOE CASTER FRAMES. This video is about How To Fix and Repair Bent Snowblower Auger Housing Skid Shoe Caster Frames. The front corners of this snowblower were rammed into some curbs over the years and bent out of place. Over time they began to rust. See how to repair these, make them look better and cut properly into a snowbank. I also installed an impeller kit on this snowblower. Be sure to watch the other video links down below. I had the same issue with my 1997 MTD, the thin gage steel just can't stand up to heavy snow removal work. I can personally confirm that the alternative methods posted by previous commenters work as I tried them all! Remember, the more you bend cold metal the weaker it becomes, Adam is correct, pre heating with a torch is the way to go. My auger housing would bend after ramming into icy snow berms (no concrete curbs needed)....so don't do either! Thanks for the fun vid!

If you reach in and slowly turn the "thrower paddles" the augers will move out out of your way. I noticed that when I made and installed the 3 rubber paddle extensions to improve the throwing distance and non clogging of the discharging slush/ice/now. My 24 inch MTD Snow blower just celebrated it's 25th year/winter.

After getting everything straight again, I'd get out the wire feed welder and ad some flat stock along the bottom and up vertically to strengthen the housing. I may do that on mine before it ends up like that. I can see it being a must on some of the newer machines because the metal is so dam flimsy now. My old Toro still has some meat on her bones so it won't easily bend like that.

I may have mentioned this before but give a 50-50 mixture of Acetone and Trans Fluid a try as a rust penetrant. It loosened things that other didn't, personally I was impressed. Just occasionally saturate the fused/rusted parts beforehand. I haven't tried it, but it may even free up wheel hubs from axles that are fused together?

I really like your videos where you explain in detail how to fix and maintain a snow blower. How many holes does a snow blower chassis require for proper venting? My blower chassis has 14 holes allowing moisture to seep inside the chassis resulting in the wheels not turning. I plugged several holes and the blower ran much better with the wheels constantly turning. If I leave 2 holes open would that allow sufficient venting? Thank you.
@GarageGear
@GarageGear 2 жыл бұрын
Ernest, what part of the blower are you trying to vent? Augers, transmission?
@ernestleo6284
@ernestleo6284 2 жыл бұрын
The parts manual labels it the chassis that is below the engine. It get hot from the engine so the snow melts and runs into some of the open holes. The flywheel gets wet and I loose traction. I have plugs used in the automotive industry that I put into some of the holes. The plugs have holes so they will vent without allowing moisture to seep in.
@GarageGear
@GarageGear 2 жыл бұрын
@@ernestleo6284 hey Ernest. I never heard of this being a problem but you could plug up most of the holes. The transmission underneath should not need any venting and the engine should not need any venting from below. Just cover any holes that you feel moisture is seeping into and you should be good to go! 👍

@@GarageGear The problem I have is when I try to level my scraper bar I put a yard stick in the center under the scraper,let the machine down as soon as i let it down from the middle of bar to my right(looking from the front)is automatically bottomed out on my yard stick,but the left side is up higher when i bring my shoes down to the concrete after removing the yard stick. If I level the scraper bar an eighth of an inch,the left side is still up about 3/8 or 5/16 with the shoes both bottomed out correctly. I'm able to push the top left of the box down to force the scraper all the way down, only to let go and that corner springs back up again.Tire pressure i already ruled out along with making sure i was on a complete flat surface.The scraper bar is all the way back in the furthest adjustable spot also.The only thing i can come up with is maybe (looking at the bottom side of the box where my right shoe is) if that side is slightly bent inward,when i bring that right shoe down and tighten it in place the shoe makes contact before the left shoe does essentially holding up the left side too high.It driving me nuts that i cant level the whole scraper an eighth of an inch .

@@michaelorlebeke3714 I have a 27inch box. That being said at the top I measure 27 exactly but as I make my way down the measurement becomes smaller(a side has to be bent inward).Now I'm thinking when during your leveling procedure if you bring both shoes down giving the appearance both are equally down all the way,the 1 shoe that's on the side that's bent inward makes contact to pavement first virtually lowers that side of the box based on the measured amount of bendage that side has. This would make the other side in appearance higher I'm thinking.

kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g72dq9SZ057Kg4E.html he clearly goes on to say 0:17 "Now I don't know what happened?" So let me take a guess. What I think happened is the "Factory" happened. This is not the first MTD 26 (that includes Cub Troy Craftsman and others) in which I've seen these exact same bends. So let me relay what I was told by the original owner of a Troy Bilt FLEX with this 26 housing....He said it CAME LIKE THAT. Now I haven't talked to Troy or MTD, but my guess they made the curved housings to reduce snow trails and forward rake ejection. It was a short lived experiment in which too many skeptical customers probably complained, so they changed back to conventional housing...That's my best guess. So if you see one of these with perfect symmetrical bends and no paint or impact damage...odds are it may have been produced like that.(2015 era). In the case there are still some MKIA skeptics that subscribe to the weak cheap MTD sheet metal theory, perhaps they could enlighten us with their theory on why these are always bent INWARD and never the other way? If it ain't broke, don't fix it....
@GarageGear

@@GarageGear The one You show definitely had some extracurricular damage and rust. The one I have has no damage or rusting. The thing is this previous owner had zero reason to be untruthful about the original purchase condition, as it was passed to me for free. I believe he called them wing baffles. As I say, I've seen a few like this, but not all, which leads me to think it was a short lived experiment on MTD's part.
