I haven't killed a plant to over watering in a few years but it hasn't been so long that I think I am above it! LOL Thanks for this video, always learn from you. 3:18 As a native spanish speaker who likes watch english videos about plants I must say: thank you so much! I was so scared about over watering my 3 plants (I'm new in this field :B). I recently transplanted one plant and I made another one with cuttings that I propagate in water (the mix: 50% peat moss, 30% coco coir, 15% worm cast and 5% perlite) and I freaked out one night because I put my finger in the soil and it was still veeery wet (I watered them in the morning) and I slept horribly thinking: this is it, I killed them :/ So I bought perlite the next day and I re repoted them (again) with more perlite on the mix this time. Idk if what I did was good but I sleep better now (lol) and it's been a week and both plants are still alive :B

I've killed an 8" cebu blue by over watering. Thankfully it was full and had a few longer vines, so I was able to chop and prop. I now have a 4" cebu blue lol. I've even bought a root rot pearls and jade from the clearance section just for the vines since I had successfully salvaged the cebu blue. I find it kind of ironic that the best way for a plant to rebound from root rot is to re-root in water. Plants are wild 🤪

:) Pothos are awesome! Very informative! 2 Thumbs up! I have had root rot, & I was extremely careful with my plants before & I felt like humiliated by a starter plant that not only rotted but also gave 3 of my Fiddle leaf figs a bug. The audacity! After I calmed down, way after I took the nasty plant outside & threw her away, I realized this was a good thing....(not great but good to learn about the rot & move on!) I gave it a closure & now know how to carry on, not muttering to myself in the dollarstore but calm as Eminem after his hyper druggie stint. Have a great week Becca! :)

Hi Becca, I remember that very video, lol, you have come a long way since then, and I am one of those people that has been growing plants for over 20 years, and I am still learning new things every day, because when I first started I did over water some of my plants as I was learning, but some of those plants survived and are over 20 years old, I love listening to all of the suggestions I get, and I remember the fungus gnats and they were so much of a bother and now I know how to eliminate them so much better now than when I first started growing plants. Thanks so much Becca, love your channel. Love you girl, give Leo a big hug say hi to Daniel, have a great day, bye for now.

I now know that I've already "repotted" my new plants in too big of pots based on what you're saying at that 1250 mark or around there, it TOTALLY makes sense! I guess it was hard for me to wrap my head around a biggish plant being in a small pot, i guess this will come with experience! @colorblox4942
@colorblox4942 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your input, I do still struggle with mold in my plant pots. I need to repot EVERY plant because I ignored it for too long and it spread :/ I had to learn that in winter, I can't saturate the pots. Even if I don't water for a month and then saturate the whole pot, it will get mold because it won't dry out for like two months. I made that mistake multiple times because plant people on the internet always tell you to saturate the pot, but when it turned fall I had mold growing in multiple pots, even when I only watered once in two weeks. In summer however, it's a whole diffenent scenario. In Summer I have to check my plants often because they dry out immensly fast. I've now got a moisture meter to help me gauge if a plant really needs water, because when I don't water for two months like my dracena dorado in that dark corner which is still growing leaves in the middle of winter for some insane reason, I feel bad because it feels like neglecting the plant. But no, my Dracena Dorado doesn't like that much water. Also, my taller Yucca and Croton plant really aren't that thirsty this time of year. All of those are in larger pots because they are large plant, but that said I don't have any additives in those pots because I've had those plants for a long time and I've just recently learned about all those things. For smaller plants in smaller pots, the whole saturating spiel works for me.
@colorblox4942
@colorblox4942 4 жыл бұрын
now that I'vw seen the whole episode, it might be that some of my plants are in too big of a pot. I've had the tendency to do that, but I haven't come around to repot everyone. Will definitely choose a pot based on root size, not plant size.

Hi Becca and plant friends! I need some help! I recently planted a Tradescantia Nanouk cutting in moist soil, and put the pot in a plastic bag for a week. According to a video online, that creates a mini greenhouse. It's been in my west-facing window sill, but I live in San Francisco so it's been consistently cloudy. I took it out when I noticed mold on top of the soil. I recently made a hydrogen-peroxide/water (1:9) spray (suggested by another video), and I've sprayed the topsoil for two days now. I believe my Nanouk has just started to root, so I'm not sure if the spray will do enough to if I should change out the soil. Thanks! P.S. I really appreciate going back to old videos to re-examine, Becca! Best way to show growth!

Aveline De Grandpré Micronutrients can’t be killed, as they are not alive :) I did wonder about the potential for killing beneficial microorganisms, though; perhaps that is what you meant? At any rate, I found this article that addresses it: homeguides.sfgate.com/sterilizing-soil-kill-microorganisms-72135.html Maybe it will answer your question.

I cant get my succulent or any cutting for that matter to take no matter what i do. Im trying to save what's left of my plants root rot but they just keep rotting after cutting. I believe im using a sterile cutter and rooting powder, i believe im cutting high enough. My soil hold water very very long im going to change that up as soon as i can. But im trying to save this succulent cutting and its just dying.

It’s because water has oxygen in it that goes to the roots. Soggy, overwatered soil prevents oxygen from getting to the roots.

@sara_387

My understanding is that water sitting in soil displaces the oxygen. You need soil that drains and leaves room for oxygen. I have my own compost bin and definitely see this if it is too wet or compacted...it starts to smell of ammonia and I know I have to get some oxygen in there. It needs to be aerobic not anaerobic, that is, it needs oxygen. Root rot is anaerobic, no oxygen. Fresh water has disolved oxygen that the plant can take up. If you leave the plant in water that is old, eventually it will root too. Plants need oxygen. Hope that makes sense.

I stuck a couple of aerial roots in a big glass waterbottle near the pot. Lots of roots and the plant seems to like it and with a light behind the bottle is looks great too

Syngonium and tradescantia, heart shaped philodendron, Brazil, also do great in water full time! I also have a hoya cutting that has been in water for a few months very happily. Sometimes it takes up to a month to see root growth but once they get started, it grows rather quick!

I love this series ☺️. Question 🙋‍♀️ Since you spoke about watering, I've been wondering how to water my plants in the tub. If I remember correctly, you do this too. So....out of curiosity, doesn't dirt get in the tub and then goes down the drain? Is that bad? Or, do you have like a soil catcher or something? I water some of my plants in the sink and then wipe up whatever dirt I can out of the sink b/c I don't know if it should go down the drain. Would love to know to save me a lot of time 🙏

How about "Rewind" as a series name? Or "ReVine", if that's the correct use of the term? To re-post, in other words. I've embarked on my own root-rot saga, which took a while to solve. Basically, it originates from the big box stores I'm purchasing from. They come from high, indirect light, greenhouses, to my medium/low-light house. In a couple of cases, I knew the specimens in the sized pots, had more than an inch of soil around them. Which I learned the hard way (in my house) leads to root rot. In a greenhouse, with all that light, I'm sure the plant would have no issues filling out the pot, quickly. But in my lower light situation, it just left the soil wet for too long. And this was watering every 3-4 weeks, during summer. I took those specimens down to a smaller pot size, so the roots are more pot-bound. Meaning less soil for water to saturate. They are finally growing like normal plants. It had me stumped for a while though. I couldn't figure out, why my plants were exhibiting signs of over-watering, when I was keeping to a regime more suitable to winter watering, than summer. It all came down to the distributors pot-size, for a greenhouse. Not what plants needed in my house.

Watched this at least 5x. My marble queen pothos got root rot. I was loving it too hard apparently. I tried putting it in fresh soil. That didn’t work. I took it out, took it apart and put it in water. It’s looking ok. I’ve had to pull it out and take off the left behind rotted roots. How long should I leave it in water before putting it back in soil? The root system is looking ok but I feel I should leave it alone to regrow roots. Any tips???

I've cut the roots off and parts of the aerial roots and the bottom part of the stem, it's now in a fresh pot with fresh soil with a small amount of rooting powder. @BeccaDeLaPlants
@BeccaDeLaPlants 4 жыл бұрын
I’d just say monitor it in the soil since you’ve already done that! It really depends on how much root was left after you removed the rot. Usually if it’s not a majority of the roots saved, I would put it in water for a bit to recover.
