In my 50s I hurt my back. I twisted while lifting. I was told I had two options. 6 months of painful therapy or surgery. After surgery I'd be feeling pretty good in 6 weeks. However, I was warned that would be my first surgery and I'd probably end up with more. I went with the PT and it worked. I'm 65 now and the back is pain free and I have full mobility. Well worth the PT.

I did similar. Went to a PT and she charged me for 4 sessions, caused more pain than good and when I asked he if it could be slipping rib along with disc issues, she asked, “what’s slipping rib?”. So I went to a chiropractor and now 6 months later I’m almost better. But the pain I experienced along with severe back spasms that left me vomiting, unable to eat, passing out and sweating in pain, even the local hospital missed it. Sadly not all PT know what they are doing, it was Bob and Brad video on slipping rib which helped me, I got the back pod and contacted the creator and he helped me too! ❤

I've had a few back injuries over the last two decades but my chiropractor has always been able to get me almost as good as before except for the last time for some reason. Over 25 visits in the last 4-1/2 months but still found myself kneeling while brushing my teeth before work last month. Went to the Spine Care Center and got a Rx for a steroid and a referral for PT. After my initial PT visit, I feel significantly better. I'm not sure exactly what the issue is because my symptoms weren't consistent with sciatica, but I'm better than I've been in the last 5 years. The loss of function and mobility was beyond something that I can explain, and the constant pain had me constantly weak. My mind is so much clearer now and I can really only take non-aspirin/ibuprofen. I also tried the NeuroMD and had used my Back revolution in between chiropractic visits to see if I could learn more about what works for me. I appreciate the most basic things in life so much more....Be well!

I had a chiropractor who kept telling me I didn't need surgery. I was told I would lose mobility in my leg if I didn't address it "soon enough" by my neglectful NP. A family member and the chiropractor both told me "you're not in as much pain as you think you are" and when I showed my chiropractor the MRIs, he said it "didn't mean anything" that my herniated disc was calcified and I wasn't improving after more than half a year of treatments. I was in PT for a month and tried different approaches. Surgery literally saved my life.

@@GrannyLinn oh I stopped going a month or two before my surgery! He knew I was in chronic 24/7 pain, I was walking with a limp, and the pain was so bad I was lucky to get 4 hours of sleep uninterrupted. He tried to pop my hip and I yelled, it was so painful. I never went back after that. I tried all the approaches I could- I did all of the stretches and exercises, I went to physical therapy for a month, and my back got so bad I had to get my significant other to help put on my shoes. My surgeon was a wonderful person, and as soon as I woke up from surgery, I just started crying. It had been years since I had little to 0 pain. I would rate my pain to a 9- it almost caused me to faint one time. But since surgery- I've been at a 0 to 3. I've been trying to find more resources and exercises or poses for people who already went the surgery route- I only find "if you have-" or "to avoid surgery" stuff. Some people need surgery- some don't

Bob and Brad: I want to express my heartfelt thanks to you both. I was diagnosed with a severely herniated disk between L2 and L3 (I think... I was so doped up on pain pills, I might have misunderstood what the doctor said). A week ago I could hardly walk, I couldn't sleep due to the severe pain. I had an MRI done last Monday and was considering surgery and / or steroid injections into the spine. Just two days ago, I started doing your spine decompression exercises (pushing up between two chairs) and following your advice on positions to use while sleeping and today I am pain free when seated and I can walk without feeling and looking like Quasimodo. YOU GUYS ROCK! I CAN'T THANK YOU ENOUGH!!!!!

I have zero back pain and feel as good as before my injury. I have education now on how to and not to move/ bend to keep my spine healthy and am thriving. Had a friend that had a minor hernia, had surgery and has suffered back pain three years post surgery.

Rick Olderman talked about the problem was coming from the upper back being weak. You guys made a video with Mike demoing that stretch. The first time I did it made a huge difference I didn't expect. I fully agree and am a fan of PT, having recovered from two bouts of sciatica with PT and the beginning of a third episode with a subset of the Princeton Core Exercises (didn’t pursue PT as this was right before the pandemic), despite MRIs showing bulging and protruding discs, stenosis, and mild scoliosis. The exercises require a lifetime commitment. On two occasions, I did not find epidural steroids helpful. Unfortunately, a young family member with a low pain threshold has had three back operations before age 25 and, while better now, might have done equally well with PT. Keep up the good work!

I love PT❤ For years I dealt with back pain and sciatica Got a new doctor she discovered I had a herniated disk and sent me to PT. I went twice a week with printouts for homework. At first I doubted it was working. But I kept at it and after couple of weeks the pain went away and never came back. BTW doing PT isn’t painful. Don’t believe anyone who tells you that-even if he is a surgeon. Try it first. It saved me. I’m so grateful for my therapist. If I ever get debilitating pain again in any part of my body I’m glad I know who to see.

My lower back has been painful for 7 yrs and multiple PT hasn’t helped BUT I have also had a neck impingement that long along with arm pain and I couldn’t lift my arms above my head for an entire year. I decided not to have surgery and instead worked on my neck/back muscles and arm pain and mobility was totally resolved. Always think of this before considering any surgery!!! Lastly, my PT doctor tells me many patients he has (who’ve had surgery) still all end up back in his office with remaining pain.

She is getting stiffvand what kind of doctor would not give her a backbrace? I have had 4 ducs removed from my neck and 3 discs removed in lower spine. I know how she she feels and I have warned her, that if she doesn't move around, she won't be doing anything but sitting on her arse. I learned a few things from you guys this morning. @@BobandBrad bad body mechanics will be bad body mechanics as they say. Brad, do you think Taekwondo is healthy long-term? I personally think it's a fantastic all-round workout, and the best part is your Master can always modify your training.

If you’ve got a disc herniation and are reading this, don’t hold your breath. PT can only do so much. Surgery may be your only option to years of fear of movement and pain. So many people on KZfaq sell false hope, including Stuart McGill. I won’t call him a doctor because he’s not. Don’t waste your time and money, go see a real doctor, a spine surgeon.

As someone who’s had shoulder surgery when actual targeted physio could have fixed it, do not get surgery. Mine was made worse by work and ended up in surgery, but the recovery from surgery wasn’t worth it.
