Part 1: • How to Fix YOUR gas Dr...
This video will teach you how to troubleshoot your gas dryer. My gas dryer would not heat up so I will show you the three main pieces in the front of the dryer that should be checked using an ohms meter. It is very easy to do and ANYONE can do this. Just to get this thing checked by a technician would cost $100. Then any parts, which are 4x the price you can get them at, plus $100 or more an hour for labor. By the time you are done, they will charge $250 to fix your dryer (half price for a brand new one). This job takes 1hr if you take your time, and the parts cost under $10.
Here is where to get the multimeter tester: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001...
Thermal fuse (Kenmore, Whirlpool): www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006...
Gas Solenoids (Kenmore, GE, Whirlpool): www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004...

Excellent videos! Good camera shots and very clearly explained. Many years ago I remember calling repair guy out. He charged me around $100 to replace that cheap 7 dollar thermal fuse and it only took him less than 15 min. That is when I decided I need to do my own washer and dryer repairs. My dryer is about 25 years old and I average replacing something on it every 3 or 4 years. I never can remember exactly how I fixed it the years before without reviewing internet and notes etc. Your 2 videos are the best by far and will be all I need the next time I need a refresher course. Thanks!

Thank you! First time home owner, moved into the house for about 5 months, the seller left behind the dryer it,s been working fine till 2 weeks ago. I've saved over $165 having someone over to fix it or getting a new dryer! My dryer didn't heat up, I replaced the solenoid $20, cleaned my dryer throughly. It's working now! This is the best video so far after searching for awhile, didn't help with the issue, I like your step by step showing how to find the problems and fixing it! Great job!

I've now used these videos (part 1 and 2) TWICE to fix my dryer. Last year it was the fuse in the back, and this time it's the flame sensor thermostat (the very last thing Chris shows beneath the drum). Well done, and much appreciated, Chris!

Chris, you are a ROCK STAR! I went to a local appliance parts store and picked up a pair of solenoids for $24, installed them after performing the trouble shooting steps in the first of your videos. You hit the nail right on the head in the second video and upon installing the new parts, my dryer worked beautifully! You saved me about $400 because if this had not worked, my wife would have gone out and purchased a new dryer! You have an awesome talent that I cannot thank you enough for sharing with us out here in do-it-yourself land. I subscribed to your channel and will be investigating what other repair advice you have in store. Outstanding job sir and thank you a million times over for your excellent videos!

Chris, you are good man! I bought a pair of solenoids for $9.40 at Amazon.com, installed them after performing the trouble shooting steps in the first of your videos. You hit the nail on the second video and upon installing the new parts, my dryer worked beautifully! You saved me about $584.00 because it this had not work, I would have gone out and purchased a new dryer! You have an awesome talent that I cannot thank enough for sharing with us. Outstanding job man and thank you for your excellent video. I had this problem; I turn dryer on, I see the glow, solenoid clicks and there is flame. About 35-45 seconds later the gas shuts off. No flame. If I restart the dryer it does the same thing. New solenoids fix it! Than you again.

I needed to have the dryer fixed and didn't have 100 to 200 dollars to spend on it. Googled and found your video. I followed it step by step and found the problem in the front of the dryer. There was no click. Purchased the part, put it in, plugged it in and turned it on. Then removed the peep hole on the bottom left and watched and listened. I saw the pink glow and shortly there after i heard the click and the gas flame on. We have 4 babies under 2 years old and 6 children under 7 years old. This was a life saver. I spent less than $25 for the two parts. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you

I NEVER leave comments, but I have to say after watching close to 30 videos on dryer issues, yours was the one that solved the problem! Mine would initially heat, but then it would turn off and not heat anymore. (The "glow" would happen, the gas just wouldn't ignite) So, off to change the solenoid! Thanks so much for posting this. Saved me hundreds of dollars I'm sure!

Thanks Chris for the dryer fix walkthrough. I was having a problem with my dryer not heating and after checking out your first video and everything checked out, I watched this one. After noticing it wasn't glowing, I checked the continuity on the ignitor and there wasn't any. After taking it out I noticed the element that heats up was cracked. Oh, and my dryer is a Whirlpool but all the elements should be about the same on any gas dryer like this. Thanks again, man.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge. As stated in your video you probably just saved my family at least $200. Fix wasn't difficult at all. Probably most time consuming part was disconnecting the "open/shut door sensor". I just couldn't get it disconnected and video wasn't clear how you so easily did it. I was worried about breaking it so took my time. But now it's done and dryer is working again. Thanks for listing the parts and parts numbers. I was able to go to my local Sears Parts & Repair store and pick them up earlier today. Paid a little more than ordering from Amazon but zero waiting! Entire fix was about $40 (I picked up a new exhaust tube as well). Again, thank you and God bless!

I paid a guy $180 to replace the exact solenoids you show in the video. I watched part 1 of this video, and ruled out problems with the part. I failed to watch this video, and called a repair dude. That was a mistake. I saw the price on the solenoids he used--$24 for both of them. DANG. Watch all the video parts. I could have saved some serious coin!! The upside is that we have a working dryer again, and it was still less expensive than a new dryer. Thanks for making this video, we need to start fixing things instead of throwing them away. Strong work!

You can do it yourself. If you watch both parts 1 and 2 all you need is a screwdriver, ratchet set, and a volt-meter. In total it would cost you $30 for the tools if you had to buy everything. Then watch the video and do what I do. The parts that need to be replaced usually cost $20. For example, your solenoids cost $20 online. It is easy to do. Let me know if you have any questions. Anyone can do this!

Chris, great video, I discovered one more thing that can go wrong besides the problems you mentioned. Apparently, the chemicals from dryer sheets can build up on the moisture sensor and the burner doesn't turn on. The dryer worked in timed dry but not in auto moisture sensing. Thanks for making everything clear and understandable.

I have a Kenmore 80 series gas dryer, two years ago I replaced the over temp sensor thanks to your tutorial, however this wee it was blowing cold air. I checked all the thermostats and were good continuity. All seemed to work just fine but after a few minutes nothing but cold air again. Today checking the glow (which was fine) but no flame, I purchased two solenoids as they come in a pair, re assembled it and its been working like a "charm" Also splurged on new ducts and cleaned all the remaining lint. Your tutorial was excellent and much appreciated THANKS. By the way the Kenmore 80 has the solenoids up front just like in your video.

You usually wont get the glow or click when the thermal fuse is bad (it is a fail-safe to protect from fires and stuff). And you are spot on with your last statement. If you dont get a glow (assuming the fuses and thermostats are ok) then its prob the ignitor. If the ignitor is glowing but there are no clicks, its prob the solenoid. Only way to know for sure is to test them with an ohm meter.

Outstanding information. I completed all of the trouble shooting steps from the first video and found continuity tests to be in good working order. Now I am moving on to the front of the dryer. I can see that the heating element is getting red hot but only once did I hear the click attributable with a functioning gas solenoid when I turned the control knob to the highest temperature setting. After hearing it click on once, it never repeated the performance and hence, I believe we have our culprit. I am going to replace it and we can see if it works! Really awesome video, both the first and this one because while I am an avid do-it-yourself type, the lack of frequency in performing dryer repairs means that I basically must reinvent the wheel, so to speak, each time I perform repairs on our washers and dryers. Your videos have helped accomplish that feat in remarkably short order because they are short but very effective. Nicely done sir!

Chris, that third piece of equipment is called a flame sensor. Although it does seem to act like a thermostat. I have a thermostat on the tube that surrounds the flame along with a thermostat and a thermistor on the out going vent from the blower. Very good video as always I enjoy them all.

thanks for the response. Yeah, I tested it last night, and after an hour testing all the thermostat and fuses, found out that the hi-limit thermostat, would open at around 170F (too early, should be 205F), and then will close at round 80F, then gas cycles again, just takes time, took about every 8-10mins. I put a jumper, to confirm, and the gas stays on. New thermostat is on its way. I though it was was the solenoid to, I'm glad I did tested each sensors. Thanks! I

Good video. Unfortunately, none of these things fixed the problem with my dryer. In case anyone else has a similar problem, my issue was that the heater relay was bad. Awesome video. simple and straight to the point. My dryer would fire twice but then stop at the third time. I followed the steps in the back panel everything checked out. Moved to the front. I tested the coils for continuity, they seemed ok. I got two new coils from a local store and the guy told me that the coils could check ok but still be bad. He said that the coils will get hot from the burner and go open but then after cooling close back up to normal. This was my fix. Thanks to this video by ChrisFix. Side note: this was a good thing because I was shocked at how much lint accumulated inside of the dryer. I had no idea because we clean the filter before each cycle. I will clean my dryer inside at least every couple of years from now on.

You saved me $400-16.66= $383.34 !!! Thanks for the very helpful video. I have the Kenmore 500 series gas dryer. I had the glow but there wasn't a click or ignition. Twas a bad solenoid, easy to change took 20 minutes total to finish thanks to your video. Can't say thank you enough. Take care

Nevermind, it was self sabatage lol. After putting it together the first time I didn't get one of the fasteners on front panel secured right. I took apart and didn't plug in the door switch upon putting together last time. Problem resolved !

Thanks for the video. I have an old dryer (Montgomery Ward - green in color) and it has this problem but at that time, ChrisFix still in 6th grade. I throw that dryer away but what a Shame, all i need is the 279834 Dryer Gas Valve Ignition Solenoid which cost $5 - $10.

Boom, everything is fixed. Good thing was everything was still working. My problem was probably a loose or corroded connector. Unplugging everything probably fixed it. I did the front and rear which also gave me time to vacuum all the lint and collect the loose change and paper clips. Dryer fires are very common and it's a great idea to keep the vents clean.

ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO. I saw your first one and was able to remove the back and test all the components which all had continuity and are good. I vacuumed it all and put the back on. After looking at this video I will remove the front and test the components tomorrow. Any recommendations as to where to purchase the parts?? Thanks again your videos have given me the confidence to try to do the repairs myself.

i think i am just going to order the thermostats & test it out, i was told that i have to order the parts specific for the model dryer i have. i found a web site(repair clinic) that will take back a part even after i use it. i am also going to order the cycling thermostat just in case. if these dont solve the problem, i will focus on parts from your 2nd video. the good thing is that if the thermostats dont solve my problem i will be able to return them, thanks for writing back & making the video
