Flush out that old dirty contaminated power steering fluid and replace with new clean fluid. Extend the life of your power steering components by performing this often overlooked routine maintenance every 50-60k. Video is specifically tailored for General Motors 3800 3.8 liter V6 vehicles but the same flushing concept applies to most vehicles.

my GP has 162k and the fluid likely hasnt ever been changed, i only had it for 20k and i was told to not worry about it, and now it makes a a squeaking sound when i turn to the left, doesnt really do it to the right, but could this be a failing pump or could doing a power steering flush solve this problem? Edit, found the problem, it was the struts causing both my popping sound and squealing, so if you happen to have a similar problem suspect the struts, if a power steering flush doesn't work

Great video thanks- any issues long term using Prestone power steering fluid instead of OEM GM fluid? Have heard it is a little thicker than OEM fluid and in cold weather can sometimes cause a whining in some 3800’s

Excellent video sir! Thank you. When you say you "capped the other end", what does that mean? Did you just keep filling the reservoir as you pumped? Thanks again!
@diymakerdan

When the return line is pulled from the reservoir the plug is used there so I can overfill the reservoir without any leaks while doing the flush..

I dont understand video. Are you attaching return line to water bottle or plugging return line up? What other end are you referring to? I cant find the other line.
@diymakerdan
@diymakerdan 2 жыл бұрын
Return line to bottle. The bung on the reservoir gets the plug before it gets the hose again.

@@diymakerdan Isn't that the pump? Not resivior, that the hose is attached to, the resivior is on the top not the hose you take off under the wheel.

How did you turn the steering wheel without turning on the engine
@diymakerdan
@diymakerdan 3 жыл бұрын
Because the front end is in the air on jack stands.

No need to complicate things, turning the wheel lock to lock will cycle the fluid through.

Did this, per your video.Now my pump is loud. Maybe I need to purge the air out, so I will turn the wheel with cap off many times before starting it again.Any suggestions? I hope I didn't ruin my power steering pump!

Check fluid in the resivior for bubbles and proper level, start car and go L to R lock to lock a few times and the noise should subside once the trapped air gets pushed out..

@@diymakerdan Thank you. I did this earlier, raised the car, uncapped it, turned the wheel slowly about 20 times, checked the level and topped it off then , all was good.Thank God, I didn't want to have to replace the pump all weekend.You have the best video on this one! Thank you!

so they recommend the clear fluid? I think it came with ATF

@@blainemcdonald6972 Yeah, you don't use ATF, it says in the manual what to use,. although I flushed mine with ATF but chased it with Prestone antileak, it says it's GM suitable.I had leftover ATF from a recent Transmission fluid change I was just going to have to dump anyway.
