Fly fishing for trout, fly fishing for Cutthroat in the Pacific Northwest has been a passion of mine for the last 40 years. I have spent most of my life fly fishing the great Pacific Northwest to include fly fishing in Alaska, fly fishing in Washington, fly fishing in Oregon, fly fishing in Idaho and fly fishing in Montana. I generally will fly fish and practice catch and release when fly fishing for trout, but I have been known to catch and cook during camping trips to many of my favorite fishing spots. I love to fly fish lakes in the higher elevation, though I have a few lowland lakes that are fly fishing only that are also on my most favorite list. I have a ton experience fly fishing rivers for trout and always enjoy discovering new rivers to fly fishing in and around the greater Pacific Northwest. I am also an accomplished at casting a fly rod - whether it is fly fishing casting for distance, fly fishing casting for accuracy, the double haul, roll cast, tower cast and many more fly fishing casting techniques - I can show you the basics when it comes to casting a fly rod. I also will cover many topics that relate to getting started with fly fishing. From your basic fly fishing setups, flies and fly boxes - we cover all the fly fishing needs for beginners. Thanks for taking the time to tune into FlyFishDan and I hope you consider subscribing to my fly fishing channel. Cheers and FISH-ON!!!

I enjoyed your video. I'm a fledgling fly fisher, and almost exclusively fish from a float tube.. and often have those situations of a line wrapped around the end of the rod. I do the same as you did, dip the rod into the lake so I can reach the tip, and I always wondered if that was "normal", lol, so I'm glad to see someone else do it. I always worry about dropping my rod and losing it to the lake. lol

I’ve found I catch more fish when the water is a little choppy compared to a calm day. The waves give the chironomid a little bit of action.

Great tutorial! Thanks for posting. Can you describe your setup a little more? Such as rod/line weight, leader size, and what knots you used for the dropper? Also, do you ever use a sinking line with no indicator? Thanks Dan! I found this through the fly fish WA f-book page and really appreciate your videos (and your large arbor battenkill, which I use, too).

In the UK the way they fish the chironomid (Buzzer) is as the dropper fly with a Booby fly on the point as the attractor pattern. This way on the draw the Buzzer rises up and down more accurately mimicking the actual nymph as it ascends. Do a video with this setup would like to see your results by comparison.

I typically use my floating line and just lengthen the leader to get down deeper. I do have a sink tip and a full sink dedicated to another rod.

Hey Dan, I'm very new to fly fishing in stillwaters and I was trying to see your line setup. I was wondering if you had a leader tied to your fly line or if you just tied a tippet to your fly line then the san juan worm?
@FlyFishDan
@FlyFishDan Жыл бұрын
I do use a tapered leader to the fly line - the taper helps roll the fly over after a cast. I use tipped to tie on a dropper. Hope that answers your question - cheers!

If your wade fishing from shore how can tell what depth to put your indicator at? Thanks for the video it's a great help!
@FlyFishDan
@FlyFishDan 2 жыл бұрын
If you see activity on top (fish taking flies just under the surface) then set your indicator 18-24” above the chironomid…if you don’t see any activity…go deeper…as you slowly roll it back to you, you’ll be able to tell if you’re too close to the bottom (you’ll staring dragging weeds, mud, etc). The key is to experiment, changing it up every 15 minutes if you’re not having any success. Best of luck!

Hi Dan, great video! Was wondering - what's the length of the leader to the worm? Is it just a 9ft tapered leader to the worm with a few feet of tippet added to the chironomid? Also does the worm sit on a tag end of a knot or is it tied through the eye of the hook?
@FlyFishDan
@FlyFishDan Жыл бұрын
Great questions Kristofer - I use a 9 foot tapered leader and about 18" of tippet tied to the eye of the worm (gives the worm a more natural presentation). Hope that helps!

Hey Dan!!! Long time subscriber, first time commenting… Quick question about your leader set up: are you using a standard 9ft tapered leader? I regularly fishing mare shallow still water and want to use an indicator as you do, but I can’t find much info anywhere about how to set up a leader when fishing shallow (with the strike indicator). All the best brother! Love the content! FISH ON!
@FlyFishDan

Thanks for being a part of my channel! I would look at a 7.5 foot tapered leader, that way you still have a length of tippet beyond the taper to work with. Hope that help! Also - feel free to email me if you ever have a question - flyfishdan@gmail.com Cheers!
